Chapter 4: The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

For five seconds, nobody moved.

The woman behind the glass didn't run.

She didn't hide.

She simply stood there, staring at Daniel Cross like she had been waiting for this exact moment.

Daniel's face had gone completely pale.

His lips parted, but no sound came out.

"Emily...""

The name escaped him like a whisper.

Ranger stood beside him, completely still.

Then the dog let out a soft whine.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Daniel took one slow step toward the door.

"Emily?""

The woman lifted her hand.

Her fingers touched the glass.

And that small movement was enough to break him.

"Open the door.""

The security officer hesitated.

Commander Whitmore looked at him.

"Open it.""

The lock clicked.

The door swung open.

Daniel didn't wait.

He walked inside.

The woman looked at him with tears filling her eyes.

"I'm sorry.""

Those two words destroyed the last bit of distance between them.

Daniel stopped.

His face twisted with confusion, anger, and pain all at once.

"Sorry?""

His voice shook.

"I buried you.""

Emily lowered her head.

"I know.""

"You let me believe you were dead.""

"I know.""

"Six months.""

His voice grew louder.

"Six months, Daniel?""

The woman closed her eyes.

"I was trying to keep you alive.""

The room went silent.

Whitmore stepped closer.

"Who are you?""

The woman looked at him.

"I'm Emily Cross.""

The commander stared.

"Then explain why the military has a death certificate with your name on it.""

Emily looked toward the floor.

"Because someone wanted me gone.""

We moved into a secure conference room.

Nobody spoke until the door locked behind us.

Emily sat across from Daniel.

Ranger stayed between them.

Like he was making sure neither one disappeared again.

I watched Daniel carefully.

The anger was still there.

But underneath it was something else.

Relief.

A painful kind of relief.

"Start from the beginning," Whitmore said.

Emily nodded.

"I worked in military logistics.""

She looked at the commander.

"Not training. Not operations. Logistics.""

Whitmore frowned.

"Then how did you get involved with Bennett?""

"I discovered unusual supply orders.""

"What kind of orders?""

Emily reached into her bag and pulled out a folder.

"Equipment requests that didn't match official training reports.""

She opened it.

"Extra protective gear. Additional restraints. Medical supplies.""

My stomach tightened.

"For the dogs?""

Emily nodded.

"For the dogs.""

Daniel looked down.

"So you found out.""

Emily looked at him.

"I found out Bennett wasn't just using harsh methods.""

She paused.

"He was covering something bigger.""

Whitmore leaned forward.

"General Vale.""

Emily nodded.

"Vale created a private program inside the military.""

The room became silent.

"A program for what?"" I asked.

Emily looked at me.

"Creating perfectly obedient working animals.""

I frowned.

"That's what every military program wants.""

"No.""

Her voice became firm.

"They wanted animals that didn't question commands.""

She looked toward Ranger.

"Animals that would attack anyone they were told to attack.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Even innocent people?""

Emily didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Daniel looked at his wife.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"Because they were watching you.""

"I could have protected you.""

"No.""

She shook her head.

"You would have confronted them.""

Daniel didn't deny it.

"And they knew that.""

Emily reached into the folder again.

She pulled out a small photograph.

"This was taken two days before my accident.""

Daniel picked it up.

His expression changed.

The picture showed Emily standing outside a building.

Behind her was General Vale.

And beside him...

Instructor Bennett.

I stared at the image.

"They were working together.""

Emily nodded.

"Yes.""

Whitmore studied the photo.

"Why fake your death?""

Emily looked at Daniel.

"Because I found the final piece of evidence.""

"What evidence?""

She hesitated.

Then looked at Ranger.

"The command recordings.""

Daniel's eyes widened.

"Ranger's recordings?""

Emily nodded.

"Bennett recorded every training session. He thought keeping records would protect him.""

She gave a bitter smile.

"He didn't realize he was creating evidence.""

I remembered the voice recorder Ranger found.

The one Bennett dropped.

The one that exposed him.

"But why did Ranger have it?"" I asked.

Emily looked at me.

"Because Daniel trained him to retrieve objects.""

She glanced at the dog.

"But Ranger learned something even more important.""

"What?""

"He learned who was dangerous.""

That night, I couldn't sleep.

Too many questions kept circling my mind.

Ranger was lying near my bed inside the temporary quarters assigned to me.

The dog had refused to stay anywhere else.

I looked at him.

"You knew all of this, didn't you?""

Ranger opened his eyes.

"You knew Bennett was bad.""

He rested his head back down.

I smiled sadly.

"You tried to warn everyone.""

The dog looked away.

Almost like he was disappointed that nobody listened.

A soft knock came at the door.

I immediately reached for my sidearm.

"Who is it?""

"It's Daniel.""

I relaxed.

When I opened the door, he was standing there holding a cup of coffee.

"I couldn't sleep either.""

I stepped aside.

He entered.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he looked at Ranger.

"He chose you.""

I smiled slightly.

"He chose not to hurt me.""

Daniel nodded.

"That's exactly who he is.""

He sat down.

"When I first got Ranger, everyone told me he was too soft.""

"Too soft?""

"They wanted aggression.""

He looked at the dog.

"But I saw something different.""

"What?""

"Control.""

Daniel looked at me.

"The strongest beings aren't the ones that can destroy everything.""

He paused.

"They're the ones that have the power to destroy... and choose not to.""

I looked at Ranger.

That explained everything.

The next morning, Commander Whitmore called an emergency meeting.

Every senior officer on the base was present.

Including one person I didn't expect.

General Marcus Vale.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

He walked into the room wearing a perfect uniform.

Calm.

Confident.

Like nothing had happened.

"Commander," Vale said.

Whitmore stared at him.

"General.""

Vale noticed Emily sitting nearby.

For the first time, his expression changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

"You survived.""

Emily smiled coldly.

"Disappointed?""

Vale recovered quickly.

"Commander, I don't know what story you've been told, but—"

"Enough.""

Whitmore placed the evidence folder on the table.

"Your secret program.""

Vale looked at it.

Then laughed.

"You think these papers prove anything?""

Whitmore didn't respond.

Vale looked around.

Then his eyes landed on me.

More specifically...

On Ranger.

"You.""

His voice became quiet.

"You're the reason this is happening.""

I stepped forward.

"What?""

Vale smiled.

"Ranger was never supposed to choose you.""

The room went silent.

"What are you talking about?""

Vale walked closer.

"He wasn't refusing Bennett's command because he was protecting you.""

My chest tightened.

"Then why?""

Vale looked at Ranger.

"Because he recognized you.""

I frowned.

"Recognized me?""

Daniel immediately stood.

"Watch your words.""

Vale ignored him.

"You don't know what happened before you came here.""

He looked directly at me.

"You weren't randomly assigned to this training.""

My heart started beating faster.

"What does that mean?""

Vale smiled.

A cold, knowing smile.

"It means Ranger didn't choose you.""

He leaned closer.

"He found you.""

Nobody spoke.

Then he dropped the sentence that changed everything.

"Because you were the last person Sergeant Cross contacted before he disappeared.""

Daniel turned toward me.

His face filled with confusion.

"Wait...""

I felt the room spinning.

"I've never met Sergeant Cross before.""

Vale's smile grew.

"That's what you believe.""

He reached into his pocket.

Pulled out a photograph.

And placed it on the table.

I picked it up.

My blood turned cold.

May you like

Because the picture showed a little girl standing beside Daniel Cross and Ranger years ago.

The little girl was me.
