Chapter 9

I went back to work.
My company was thriving. My team was loyal. My clients trusted me.
I had lost six years to a bad marriage.
I wasn't going to lose any more time.
I expanded the consulting firm. We opened a second office in Dallas.
I hired more women. I promoted from within. I created a culture where no one was ever made to feel small.
I started a foundation.
The Claire Bennett Foundation.
It helped women who had been financially abused by their spouses or in-laws. Legal fees. Credit repair. Safe housing.
I knew what it was like to have your identity stolen by the people you trusted most.
I didn't want any other woman to feel that alone.
Emma ran the foundation with me.
We helped our first client within a month.
A woman whose husband had opened twelve credit cards in her name.
We got her credit cleared. We got her divorced. We got her kids into a safe apartment.
She sent me a card.
"Thank you for showing me I could stand up."

I taped it to my office wall.
And I kept going.
