Chapter 15

Two years later.
I stood in the backyard of my house.
The house I had bought with my own money. The house they had tried to steal.
It was mine. Still. Forever.
Marcus was grilling. Emma and her husband were there. My parents were there. My team from the foundation was there.
We were celebrating.
The tenth shelter had just opened.
The foundation had helped over five thousand women.
We had recovered over twelve million dollars in stolen assets.
I looked around at the people I loved.
Marcus caught my eye and smiled.
My sister raised her glass.
"To Claire. Who taught us all that you never have to kneel."
Everyone cheered.
I raised my glass.
"To all the women still standing. To the ones who haven't found their voice yet. And to the ones who helped us find ours."
We drank.
Later, after everyone left, Marcus and I sat on the porch.
The same porch where Margaret had once demanded I kneel.
The same porch where I had poured water over her head.
The same porch where I had finally said, "Enough."
Marcus put his arm around me.
"Penny for your thoughts."
I smiled.
"I was just thinking. Six years ago, I was the quiet one. The little office wife. The woman who was supposed to kneel."
"And now?"
I looked at my ring. Simple. Gold. Meaningful.
I looked at my house. Mine.
I looked at the man beside me. Who loved me. Who respected me. Who knelt for me.
"And now," I said, "I'm free."
He squeezed me.
Somewhere in the house, a phone buzzed.
A new alert. A new donation to the foundation. A new woman seeking help.
I didn't check it.
Not tonight.
Tonight, I just sat.
In my home. With my husband. In peace.
And I knew.
May you like
Whatever came next, I would face it standing up.
The end.
