Chapter 5: What Ryan Had Been Hiding
I didn't sleep.
At 3:17 a.m., I sat in the study with Melissa Carter's photograph on the desk.
Former Department of Defense contractor.
Financial transfers.
Secret meetings.
My husband.
None of it made sense.
Then I noticed something in the photograph.
Ryan wasn't looking at Melissa.
He was looking at the building behind her.
A hotel.
The same hotel where I had stayed during one of my Pentagon assignments.
I called Daniel Reeves.
He answered on the second ring.
“Colonel?””
“I need a favor.””
“What happened?””
“Melissa Carter.””
Silence.
Then:
“Where did you get that name?””
My pulse quickened.
“You know her.””
“I know of her.””
“Daniel.””
He sighed.
“She was removed from a contractor program three years ago.””
“Why?””
“Security violation.””
“What kind?””
“I can't discuss that over the phone.””
“Then come here.””
Another pause.
“I'll be there in thirty minutes.””
I ended the call.
At 4:02, the security system announced his arrival.
Daniel entered the study carrying a folder.
He looked at me.
Then at the photograph.
“You're sure?””
“Yes.””
He sat.
“Claire, this is bigger than your marriage.””
“I figured.””
“Melissa Carter had access to administrative data connected to several senior officers.””
“Mine?””
“We don't know.””
“Does she know my rank?””
He didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
I leaned back.
“What does she want?””
“We don't know.””
“What did she do?””
Daniel opened the folder.
“Three years ago, she attempted to access personnel records she wasn't authorized to view.””
“Whose?””
“Yours.””
The room seemed to shrink.
“Mine?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“We never established a motive.””
I looked at Ryan's photograph.
“She's been seeing my husband.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“For how long?””
“Fourteen months, according to the financial records.””
He rubbed his jaw.
“Claire, you need to consider whether Ryan knew who you were.””
I shook my head.
“He didn't.””
“How certain are you?””
“Seven years.””
Daniel studied me.
“People can hide things for seven years.””
“I know.””
The front door opened downstairs.
I stood.
Ryan.
He walked into the foyer alone.
No Vivian.
No lawyer.
Just him.
He looked exhausted.
“Claire.””
Daniel stepped forward.
Ryan stopped.
“Who's he?””
I didn't answer.
Daniel did.
“Major Daniel Reeves.””
Ryan looked confused.
“Major?””
I watched his face.
He was finally beginning to understand how many people existed in my life that he had never bothered to know.
Ryan looked at me.
“I want to see the kids.””
“No.””
“Claire, please.””
“You're not seeing them alone.””
“I’m their father.””
“And my mother is their grandmother.””
His eyes dropped.
“I didn't hurt her.””
“You watched someone else hurt her.””
His shoulders fell.
“I was scared.””
I stared at him.
“Of Vivian?””
He shook his head.
“Of you.””
The words caught me off guard.
“Why?””
He laughed bitterly.
“Because I knew there was something you weren't telling me.””
Daniel's expression changed.
I stepped closer.
“What did you know?””
Ryan looked at me.
“I knew you weren't a consultant.””
My heart stopped.
“You knew?””
“Not everything.””
“What did you know?””
He looked toward Daniel.
Then back at me.
“I knew you had military connections.””
“How?””
“Melissa told me.””
The room went silent.
Daniel stepped forward.
“What exactly did Melissa tell you?””
Ryan swallowed.
“She said Claire wasn't who I thought she was.””
I stared at him.
“When did she tell you?””
“Fourteen months ago.””
My stomach turned.
Fourteen months.
The same day the transfers began.
“What did she want?””
Ryan looked at the floor.
“Information.””
“What information?””
“Your schedule.””
Daniel went completely still.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“My schedule?””
Ryan nodded.
“She wanted to know when you would be away.””
“Why?””
“I don't know.””
“You're lying.””
“I'm not!””
His voice cracked.
“She said it was about money.””
“What money?””
“I don't know.””
“Ryan.””
“I swear.””
I stepped closer.
“Did you give her my schedule?””
He couldn't look at me.
That was enough.
Daniel's hand moved toward his phone.
Ryan whispered,
“I didn't know what she was going to do.””
I stared at my husband.
For fourteen months, every time I left for an assignment, someone had known.
Every time I returned, money moved.
My mother had been abused while I was away.
My children had been left in that house.
And Ryan had been giving someone information about my movements.
I felt strangely calm.
“Where is Melissa now?””
Ryan looked at me.
“I don't know.””
“Then why are you here?””
He reached into his jacket.
“I brought this.””
He placed a small envelope on the table.
My name was written across it.
Not Claire.
Not Colonel Bennett.
Just:
*CLAIRE*
I didn't touch it.
“What is it?””
Ryan's voice dropped.
“She gave it to me last night.””
“Why?””
“She told me to give it to you if you ever found out.””
I looked at Daniel.
He shook his head slightly.
Don't.
But I opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
My mother.
Standing in our kitchen.
Holding Emma.
Taken from outside the house.
On the back, someone had written:
*YOU SHOULD HAVE COME HOME SOONER.*
My blood went cold.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
No one spoke.
Then a woman's voice whispered:
“Colonel Bennett?””
I stood perfectly still.
“Yes.””
“Your husband wasn't the one we were watching.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Who are you?””
A breath.
Then:
“We were watching you.””
The call ended.
Daniel immediately pulled out his phone.
I stared at Ryan.
He looked terrified.
And for the first time, I realized the bruises on my mother's arm might not have been the beginning of this story.
They might have been a warning.
A warning from someone who had been waiting eighteen years to find the woman behind the quiet wife.
May you like
And whoever was watching me had just made one thing very clear.
They knew exactly who Colonel Claire Bennett was.
