Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Lie

Gregory did not move.

For several seconds, nobody in the room moved.

The only sound was the quiet hum of the refrigerator and the rain tapping against the windows.

Then Gregory laughed.

A small, nervous laugh.

The kind people make when they are desperately trying to convince themselves they are still in control.

“You have no idea what you’re doing,” he said.

The older man standing beside Emma looked at him calmly.

“I know exactly what I’m doing, Gregory.””

Gregory’s eyes narrowed.

“Who are you supposed to be?””

The man stepped forward and placed a business card on the table.

“My name is Daniel Whitmore.””

The name meant nothing to Gregory.

But it meant everything to me.

I had heard it before.

My father mentioned him countless times when I was younger.

Not as a business partner.

As a brother.

Daniel was the person my father trusted when everyone else wanted something from him.

I looked at him.

“You knew my father?””

Daniel’s expression softened.

“I did.””

My throat tightened.

“Why have I never met you?””

He looked down.

“Because your father asked me to stay away.””

“Why?””

Daniel glanced at Gregory.

“Because he knew someone would eventually come looking for what he protected.””

Gregory immediately stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.””

Daniel didn’t even look at him.

“Your father created the Whitmore Foundation and the company trust structure because he suspected someone close to him was leaking information.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Someone close?””

Daniel nodded.

“He never knew exactly who.””

Gregory scoffed.

“So you’re saying a dead man’s paranoia is proof?””

“No.””

Daniel opened the folder.

“Your own actions are.””

He pulled out several documents.

Bank transfers.

Emails.

Contracts.

My stomach dropped as I looked at the dates.

Years before Gregory met me.

Rachel leaned closer.

“These are copies of transactions between Gregory and several shell companies.””

Gregory’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

“You forged those.””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“That’s exactly what I expected you to say.””

He turned another page.

“And that is why I brought the originals.””

Gregory stared.

The room became colder.

I watched the man I married slowly realize something.

For the first time, he was not the person holding the secret.

He was the person trapped by it.

“You planned this,” Gregory whispered.

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“She did.””

I looked up.

“Me?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your father was right about one thing. You are far more like him than you realize.””

I didn’t know whether that comforted me or hurt me.

My father had spent his life protecting what he built.

And now I was standing in the same position.

Trying to protect everything from someone who entered my life pretending to love me.

Gregory suddenly pointed at me.

“She manipulated everyone.””

I stared at him.

“Excuse me?””

“You brought them here.””

“Yes.””

“You recorded me.””

“Yes.””

“You investigated me.””

I tilted my head.

“No, Gregory.””

I stepped closer.

“I discovered you.””

His face twisted.

“You think you’re better than me?””

“No.””

I looked at the broken pieces of our marriage sitting between us.

“I think I was foolish for believing you were better than you are.””

That sentence hit him harder than any accusation.

Because Gregory cared about one thing more than money.

His image.

His reputation.

The idea that everyone admired him.

Rachel gathered the documents.

“We have enough evidence to freeze every account connected to your fraudulent activity.””

Gregory laughed.

“You think that scares me?””

Rachel looked at him.

“It should.””

He turned toward me.

“You really want to do this?””

I didn’t answer.

“You want to destroy your own husband?””

I stared at him.

“You stopped being my husband the moment you decided I was an investment.””

His expression hardened.

Then he said something that made Emma gasp.

“You should ask your sister why she never told you about the accident.””

I turned slowly.

“What accident?””

Emma went pale.

Gregory smiled.

There it was.

Another weapon.

Another secret.

“Tell her.””

Emma looked terrified.

“Gregory…”

“Tell her.””

I looked between them.

“Emma?””

My sister closed her eyes.

And whispered:

“The night your father died…”

My heartbeat stopped.

“What about it?””

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“I wasn’t supposed to survive that crash either.””

The room went silent.

And then she said the words that changed everything.

“Because I was the one driving.””
