Chapter 8: The Secret Inside the Hale Family

The words hung in the room.

"Inside Douglas Hale's own family.""

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Because everyone understood the same thing at the same time.

My father had not been hiding from the Hales.

He had been hiding among them.

I looked at Grant.

The man who had spent five years sleeping beside me.

The man who had kissed my forehead every morning.

The man who had slapped me in front of six hundred people.

I wanted to hate him.

I needed to hate him.

But the truth was becoming too complicated.

The enemy I had spent years trusting was not the only one who had lied.

And the people I thought were protecting me had all been holding pieces of the same secret.

"Explain.""

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

Grant looked at me.

"Emma.""

"No.""

I stepped closer.

"Not another half-truth. Not another explanation that starts with 'I was protecting you.''"

His expression tightened.

"Fair.""

It was the first time he had admitted anything without defending himself.

"Tell me everything.""

Grant looked at Daniel.

Then Marcus.

Then finally me.

"Your father didn't disappear the night everyone thought he did.""

I waited.

"He escaped.""

"Because of you?""

He nodded.

"Because I warned him.""

I felt my stomach twist.

"Why?""

Grant looked down.

"Because Douglas was going to destroy him.""

"Your father.""

"Yes.""

The word sounded strange coming from him.

Like he had spent years trying not to say it.

"My entire life, Douglas taught me one thing.""

Grant paused.

"That loyalty mattered more than morality.""

I said nothing.

"He raised me to believe family meant obedience.""

His eyes moved toward the fireplace.

"He didn't want a son. He wanted an heir who would follow orders.""

For the first time, I saw something beneath Grant's arrogance.

Pain.

"You were sent to me.""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

The honesty hurt.

"But I didn't expect you.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

"I expected someone desperate for money.""

His voice lowered.

"Someone who would chase the Hale name.""

He looked at me.

"But you didn't.""

A bitter smile appeared.

"You were arguing with a gallery customer about paying an artist fairly. You were wearing a jacket with a broken zipper because you said fixing it was cheaper than replacing it. You gave your lunch to a homeless man outside the train station.""

I remembered that day.

I remembered Grant watching me.

I thought he was impressed.

I never imagined he was reporting back.

"I was supposed to collect information.""

His voice cracked slightly.

"Instead, I started seeing the person my father was afraid of.""

"Me?""

"No.""

A pause.

"Your father.""

The room became quiet.

"Douglas wasn't afraid of your inheritance.""

Grant looked at the floor.

"He was afraid of what your father knew.""

I looked at Marcus.

"The evidence.""

Marcus nodded.

"Your father discovered that Douglas didn't build Hale Industries legally.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

"Your grandfather helped build the foundation of the company. Douglas manipulated ownership records after his death.""

I looked at the documents.

"So my family was supposed to own part of Hale Industries?""

"Yes.""

Grant continued.

"Douglas spent years trying to erase that.""

"And my father found out.""

"Yes.""

I turned away.

The entire story of my marriage had been built around something I never knew existed.

My name.

My family.

My father's fight.

"I still don't understand one thing.""

Everyone looked at me.

"If you knew all this...""

I looked at Grant.

"Why did you marry me?""

His eyes filled with regret.

"Because by the time I realized what I was doing, it was too late.""

"Too late?""

"I loved you.""

I almost looked away.

Because that sentence still hurt.

"I know what I did.""

His voice became quieter.

"I know loving you doesn't erase it.""

"No.""

I agreed.

"It doesn't.""

He nodded.

"I deserved that.""

The admission surprised me.

Grant Hale admitting he deserved something.

That was new.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Emma, there is something else.""

I looked at him.

"What now?""

He hesitated.

"The person who sent the message about your father disappearing...""

My stomach tightened.

"Who?""

Daniel glanced at Nadia.

She looked away.

"Nadia didn't send it.""

I frowned.

"Then who did?""

Marcus answered.

"We traced the number.""

"And?""

His face became serious.

"It came from inside Hale Industries.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Douglas?""

"No.""

A pause.

"Someone with higher access.""

Everyone went silent.

"Who?""

Marcus looked at me.

"The current CEO.""

I frowned.

"Douglas is the CEO.""

Marcus shook his head.

"Not anymore.""

I didn't understand.

"Then who?""

Nobody answered.

My phone vibrated.

A new message.

Everyone looked at it.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*You are finally asking the right questions, Emma.*

My blood went cold.

Because I knew that number.

It wasn't unknown.

It was saved in my phone.

A number I had called many times.

I stared at the name.

"Nadia.""

She looked at me.

"What?""

I slowly turned the screen around.

Her face changed.

Because the message was not from her.

It was from someone using her old phone.

The same phone she claimed she lost six months ago.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

"Emma, don't reply.""

But another message appeared.

*Ask Daniel why he lied about the night your father escaped.*

I looked at Daniel.

His face went pale.

"Nadia?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

But nobody believed uncertainty anymore.

Not after tonight.

I looked at Daniel.

"Tell me.""

He didn't speak.

"Daniel.""

Finally, he said:

"I didn't tell you because your father made me promise.""

I laughed softly.

"Another promise.""

He looked ashamed.

"He didn't escape alone.""

The room went silent.

"Who was with him?""

Daniel looked at Grant.

Then me.

"Someone else.""

"Who?""

Daniel took a breath.

"Your mother.""

The word hit me harder than anything else.

My mother.

A woman I barely remembered.

A woman who died when I was young.

I shook my head.

"No.""

Daniel looked at me sadly.

"Emma...""

"My mother died.""

"No.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

"Your mother disappeared.""

I stepped back.

"Stop.""

But he continued.

"You were told she died because that was the only way to protect you.""

My head spun.

"Why?""

"Because Douglas Hale believed she knew where the evidence was.""

I stared at everyone.

My entire life was a lie.

My father wasn't dead.

My mother wasn't dead.

My marriage wasn't real.

The people I trusted had hidden everything.

I couldn't tell what was real anymore.

Then the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Gray hair.

Tears in her eyes.

She looked at me like she had been waiting years for this moment.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel whispered:

"No...""

The woman took one step forward.

"Emma.""

My hands began shaking.

Because I knew that voice.

I knew those eyes.

Even though my memories were blurry.

Even though I was only eight years old when I last saw her.

The woman pressed a hand over her mouth.

"I'm sorry.""

A tear fell down her face.

"I wanted to come back sooner.""

My breathing stopped.

Because the impossible had happened twice in one night.

My father was alive.

And now...

So was my mother.

"Mom?""

The word came out before I could stop it.

The woman broke down.

"Yes, sweetheart.""

She looked at me.

"I'm your mother.""

Then she turned toward Grant.

And her expression changed.

"You need to tell her the final truth.""

Everyone froze.

Grant stared at her.

"What truth?""

My mother looked directly at me.

"The reason Douglas Hale wanted your father gone...""

A pause.

"Wasn't because of the evidence.""

My heart raced.

"Then why?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because your father discovered who Douglas Hale's real heir was.""

Silence.

Then she whispered:

May you like

"Emma...""

"Douglas Hale is your biological grandfather.""
