Chapter 9: The Bloodline Douglas Tried to Erase

I stared at my mother.

I waited for her to take it back.

To laugh.

To tell me this was some cruel misunderstanding.

Anything.

Anything except the impossible truth standing in front of me.

"Say that again.""

My voice was barely a whisper.

My mother looked at me with tears in her eyes.

"Douglas Hale is your biological grandfather.""

The room felt like it had lost all oxygen.

I looked at Daniel.

Then Marcus.

Then Grant.

Nobody looked surprised.

And somehow, that hurt the most.

Everyone had known.

Everyone had carried a piece of my identity.

Everyone except me.

"No.""

I shook my head.

"That can't be true.""

My mother stepped closer.

"I know how this sounds.""

"You think?""

My voice cracked.

"My entire life I thought I was Emma Bennett.""

"You are.""

"Then why are you telling me Douglas Hale is my grandfather?""

She swallowed.

"Because your father wanted you to know when you were strong enough to handle it.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Strong enough?""

I wiped my tears.

"I was strong enough to survive my husband humiliating me in front of six hundred people.""

Nobody spoke.

"I was strong enough to build a life while believing both my parents were gone.""

I looked at her.

"I was strong enough to live fifteen years without answers.""

My voice dropped.

"So why wasn't I strong enough to know who I was?""

My mother closed her eyes.

"Because knowing would have put a target on your back.""

I turned away.

Everyone had the same excuse.

Protection.

Safety.

Love.

All words that somehow ended with me being left in the dark.

Marcus opened his folder again.

"There are documents that can explain everything.""

I looked at him.

"I don't want documents.""

Everyone became quiet.

"I want the truth from the people who made these choices.""

My eyes landed on my mother.

"Start.""

She nodded slowly.

"I was Douglas Hale's daughter.""

The words sounded unreal.

"His only child.""

I listened.

"Your grandfather was not always the man you know today.""

I almost laughed.

"I don't know him.""

She looked down.

"Before the money. Before the power. Before Hale Industries became what it is, Douglas was different.""

"People change.""

"Yes.""

Her voice became heavy.

"But some people become exactly who they were always capable of becoming.""

She sat down.

"I fell in love with your father when I was twenty-four.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Your father?""

She nodded.

"Michael.""

I froze.

I hadn't heard my father's name spoken in years.

"Douglas hated him.""

"Why?""

"Because Michael saw through him.""

She looked at the floor.

"Your father knew Douglas was cutting corners. He knew he was taking things that didn't belong to him.""

"The company.""

"Yes.""

"And you helped him?""

She nodded.

"I gave Michael access to information.""

My eyes widened.

"You betrayed your own father.""

Her expression was sad.

"No.""

A pause.

"I betrayed the version of my father I wanted to believe existed.""

The room became silent.

"Douglas discovered what we were doing.""

My mother looked at me.

"When I became pregnant with you, everything changed.""

I swallowed.

"You.""

She nodded.

"Douglas found out he had a granddaughter.""

I felt cold.

"Why would that matter?""

"Because your existence threatened everything.""

I frowned.

"How?""

Marcus answered.

"Because legally, Emma was the closest blood heir.""

My eyes moved to him.

"What?""

"Douglas had built his company by removing other family claims. But if your lineage became public, Emma would have rights.""

My hands tightened.

"So he tried to erase me.""

My mother nodded.

"Not you.""

Her voice broke.

"Your father and I.""

I looked at Grant.

"And you knew all of this.""

He nodded.

"Not all of it.""

I looked at him.

"Enough.""

He accepted that.

"Yes.""

The anger returned.

"You married me knowing my family was connected to yours.""

"Yes.""

"You knew my father was alive.""

"Yes.""

"You knew Douglas was after me.""

"Yes.""

My voice became quiet.

"How did you live with yourself?""

Grant looked away.

"I didn't.""

The answer surprised me.

"I spent five years trying to convince myself I could fix it.""

"Fix what?""

"The damage.""

I shook my head.

"You don't fix a person by lying to them.""

"I know.""

"And you don't protect someone by becoming another person they need protection from.""

His eyes closed.

"I know.""

For once, I believed he understood.

But understanding didn't erase what happened.

My mother reached into her purse.

She removed a small photograph.

"I need you to see something.""

I took it.

The photograph was old.

A young version of my mother.

My father.

And another man.

Douglas.

But Douglas looked different.

Younger.

Smiling.

And standing beside them was a little girl.

Me.

My breath stopped.

On the back of the photo was handwriting.

*My granddaughter, my greatest mistake.*

I looked up.

"What does that mean?""

My mother looked devastated.

"Douglas wrote that after he found out about you.""

"He called me a mistake?""

"No.""

She shook her head.

"He meant that loving you was the one thing he couldn't control.""

I stared at the photo.

That was somehow worse.

Because hatred was easier.

But regret?

Regret was complicated.

"Where is he now?""

Nobody answered.

I looked around.

"Where is Douglas?""

Daniel spoke.

"He disappeared.""

"When?""

"Tonight.""

My stomach tightened.

"After the party?""

He nodded.

"After he realized you activated the trust.""

I looked at Marcus.

"Can he take it?""

"No.""

"Then why run?""

Nobody answered.

Then Grant quietly said:

"Because he knows what's inside.""

I turned toward him.

"What's inside?""

Grant looked at the documents.

"The final evidence.""

"The evidence my father protected?""

"Yes.""

"What does it prove?""

Grant hesitated.

And that hesitation terrified me.

"Grant.""

He looked at me.

"It proves Douglas didn't just steal from your family.""

A pause.

"It proves he arranged your father's disappearance.""

My heart stopped.

My mother covered her mouth.

Daniel looked away.

"But you said my father escaped.""

"He did.""

Grant nodded.

"But Douglas planned for him not to survive.""

The room became silent.

I looked at the letter again.

The evidence.

The secrets.

The years stolen from me.

Then my phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice spoke.

Cold.

Familiar.

"Emma.""

My body went still.

I knew that voice.

Even though I had only heard it a few times.

Douglas.

My grandfather.

The man who tried to erase my family.

"Where are you?""

He laughed softly.

"Still asking the wrong questions.""

My grip tightened.

"What do you want?""

"I want to explain.""

"After everything?""

"Yes.""

"Why should I listen?""

A pause.

Then his voice changed.

Not angry.

Not threatening.

Almost tired.

"Because there is one thing your father never told you.""

I looked at Daniel.

Then my mother.

"What?""

Douglas sighed.

"Michael didn't disappear because of me.""

Nobody moved.

"What are you saying?""

"The night he vanished...""

A pause.

"He took something with him.""

My heart raced.

"What?""

"The one piece of evidence that could destroy all of us.""

I swallowed.

"What evidence?""

His answer came quietly.

"The truth about who actually ordered the attack on your family.""

The room froze.

"Who?""

Douglas didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"Ask your mother why she was the last person seen with your father that night.""

I looked at my mother.

Her face went pale.

The phone went silent.

Then the call ended.

Nobody spoke.

Because the question was no longer about Douglas.

It was about my mother.

May you like

And for the first time since she returned...

She looked afraid.
