Chapter 9: The Truth Lydia Left Behind
I stood in the doorway, unable to move.
The sentence kept repeating in my head.
*I was the one who told Adrian where to find Lydia.*
For one terrible second, I heard only those words.
Not the explanation after them.
Not the fear in Rebecca’s voice.
Not the sound of my brothers entering behind me.
Only the betrayal.
The woman who had comforted my family.
The woman who had held my hand after Lydia’s disappearance.
The woman who had watched me grow up.
She had given Adrian my sister’s location.
“Explain.””
My voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
Rebecca looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“I knew you would hate me.””
“I don’t know what I feel yet.””
That was the truth.
Because hate was simple.
This was not.
This was confusion.
Pain.
Anger.
A thousand emotions fighting for space.
Marcus stepped into the room.
“Rebecca.””
She looked at him.
“You should have told her years ago.””
His voice was not angry.
That made it worse.
It sounded like disappointment.
Rebecca lowered her head.
“I know.””
Caleb moved closer to me.
“Stay behind us.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
“I need to hear this.””
Rebecca nodded slowly.
“You do.””
She looked around the old living room.
The place where my family had once been happy.
The place where Lydia had laughed.
The place where everything changed.
“Twelve years ago, Lydia discovered Adrian’s operation.””
“I know.””
“No.””
Rebecca looked at me.
“You know pieces.””
She wiped her face.
“You don’t know what she was trying to do.””
I crossed my arms.
“Then tell me.””
Rebecca took a breath.
“Lydia wasn’t trying to expose Adrian.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She wanted to destroy everything connected to him.””
The room went silent.
“She knew exposing him publicly would only make him disappear. People like Adrian survive scandals. They change names.
They hire lawyers. They rebuild.””
Rebecca looked toward the old fireplace.
“So Lydia decided to follow the money.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“She was building a case.””
Rebecca nodded.
“Yes.””
“She needed access.””
“Yes.””
I looked at the photograph of Lydia in my mind.
The sister I never knew.
The woman who had been fighting alone.
“What happened?””
Rebecca’s expression changed.
“She got too close.””
“To Adrian?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you tell him where she was?””
Rebecca closed her eyes.
“Because Lydia asked me to.””
Nobody spoke.
Marcus shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
Rebecca looked at him.
“You know it’s not.””
His face tightened.
“Lydia would never put herself in danger like that.””
“She knew the risk.””
Rebecca’s voice broke.
“But she also knew something else.””
“What?””
“She knew Adrian trusted me.””
The answer was like a door opening.
A horrible door.
Rebecca continued.
“Adrian believed I was protecting Lydia because I cared about her.””
She looked at me.
“And I did.””
Her voice cracked.
“But Lydia realized something.””
“What?””
“She realized the only way to get close enough to Adrian was to make him think he had won.””
I felt cold.
“She wanted you to betray her.””
Rebecca nodded.
“She wanted Adrian to believe she was gone.””
Marcus stared.
“You’re saying Lydia planned her own disappearance?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she tell us?””
Rebecca looked at him.
“Because she knew you would never agree.””
That hurt.
Because it sounded exactly like my brothers.
Everyone deciding what was best.
Everyone carrying impossible secrets.
Everyone thinking love gave them permission to choose for me.
“She trusted you with the truth.””
Rebecca nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why did she stay away?””
The tears finally fell from Rebecca’s eyes.
“Because Adrian wasn’t the only person she feared.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Rebecca looked at Daniel.
Then at my brothers.
Then back at me.
“It means Lydia discovered someone else was involved.””
The room went silent.
“Who?””
Rebecca hesitated.
“Someone inside Adrian’s organization.””
“That’s what everyone keeps saying.””
I stepped forward.
“But nobody tells me who.””
Rebecca looked at me.
“Because Lydia never found out.””
I froze.
“She didn’t?””
“No.””
Rebecca shook her head.
“She only found evidence that someone was helping him.””
“Then why did she think it was someone close to us?””
Rebecca looked at the envelope in my hand.
“Because of that.””
I looked down.
“The letter?””
“Yes.””
“What about it?””
“Lydia wrote that after she discovered something about Adrian.””
“What?””
Rebecca’s face became serious.
“She discovered Adrian had chosen you before you ever met him.””
The room went cold.
I thought of the photograph.
The wedding.
The message.
*She chose you.*
“What does that mean?””
Rebecca looked at Marcus.
Then at me.
“It means your marriage was never an accident.””
I felt like the floor disappeared.
“No.””
Rebecca’s voice softened.
“Elena…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“He didn’t know me.””
“He knew enough.””
“How?””
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel spoke.
“Lydia’s investigation included Adrian’s personal records.””
My heart raced.
“What records?””
“Research.””
The word made me uncomfortable.
“He kept files.””
“On people?””
“Yes.””
“Why me?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Because of Lydia.””
I stopped breathing.
Rebecca continued.
“Adrian knew Lydia had one weakness.””
I whispered:
“Me.””
She nodded.
“He knew if he couldn’t control Lydia, he could control the person she loved most.””
The room became painfully quiet.
My entire marriage rearranged itself.
The first meeting.
The perfect timing.
The way Adrian seemed to understand my dreams.
The way he encouraged me to step away from my family.
The way he always said:
“They don’t understand us.””
Maybe he didn’t choose me because he loved me.
Maybe he chose me because I was Lydia’s sister.
Because I was leverage.
A way to punish a woman who had tried to expose him.
I covered my mouth.
Marcus immediately moved toward me.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
“For what?””
“For not telling you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice trembled.
“Not just that.””
I looked at all of them.
“For letting me believe I was the problem.””
Nobody spoke.
Because they knew.
They knew Adrian had spent years separating me from everyone.
And they had let the distance grow because they were afraid.
Afraid of losing me.
Afraid of pushing too hard.
Afraid of being wrong.
But fear had consequences.
My phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
Nobody spoke at first.
Then Adrian’s voice came through.
“You found Rebecca.””
I closed my eyes.
“How?””
A soft laugh.
“You still ask the wrong questions.””
My anger rose.
“No. I ask the questions you spent years avoiding.””
Silence.
Then:
“You think you know the story now?””
“I know enough.””
“No, Elena.””
His voice became colder.
“You know the version everyone wants you to believe.””
I looked around the room.
At Rebecca.
At my brothers.
At Daniel.
“Then tell me your version.””
He was quiet.
For several seconds.
Then he said:
“Your sister wasn’t investigating me.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“She was working for me.””
Nobody moved.
“What?””
Adrian continued.
“She was never trying to expose the foundation.””
“That’s a lie.””
“Is it?””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“She had access to everything because I trusted her.””
I looked at Rebecca.
She shook her head.
“No.””
Adrian continued.
“Ask yourself why Lydia disappeared instead of going to the police.””
My stomach twisted.
“Because you threatened her.””
“No.””
His answer was immediate.
“Because she was afraid of what she had done.””
The call became silent.
Then he said the words that made everyone in the room freeze.
“Ask Rebecca what Lydia took from me the night she disappeared.””
I looked at Rebecca.
Her face changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
And that terrified me.
Because she knew exactly what Adrian meant.
“Rebecca?””
She didn’t answer.
“Rebecca.””
Slowly, she reached into her coat.
She pulled out a small black drive.
Old.
Worn.
Hidden.
My heart pounded.
“What is that?””
Her eyes met mine.
“The reason Lydia survived.””
I stared at it.
“Then why didn’t she use it?””
Rebecca’s face broke.
“Because she couldn’t.””
“Why?””
Rebecca looked toward the window.
Toward the darkness outside.
Then whispered:
“Because the person who gave Lydia that drive…”
May you like
She looked back at me.
“…was your father.””
