Chapter 7: The Lie Everyone Believed
I lowered the phone slowly.
The world felt strangely quiet.
Not peaceful.
Not calm.
The kind of quiet that comes before something breaks.
Everyone was watching me.
Marcus.
Julian.
Caleb.
Daniel.
They all saw the change in my face.
They all knew Adrian had said something.
“What did he say?””
Caleb’s voice was sharp.
I looked at Daniel.
Then at my brothers.
“He said the person standing beside me is the reason Lydia disappeared.””
Nobody moved.
Daniel’s expression changed first.
Not anger.
Shock.
Real shock.
Then Marcus turned toward him.
Slowly.
“Daniel.””
The single word carried years of suspicion.
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Caleb stepped forward.
“You want to explain?””
“I don’t know what Adrian is trying to do.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Elena, listen to me carefully. Adrian is trying to separate you from the people who can help you.””
I almost laughed.
“Isn’t that exactly what you would say if you were guilty?””
The words hurt him.
I saw it.
For some reason, that bothered me.
Because Daniel looked like someone who had spent years carrying a burden.
Not someone who had caused one.
But I had learned something tonight.
People could look innocent.
People could sound sincere.
People could still lie.
“I need answers,” I said.
Daniel nodded.
“You deserve them.””
“Then start.””
He looked at the envelope in my hand.
“Lydia came to me twelve years ago because she discovered Adrian was moving money through fake organizations.””
“I know.””
“She also discovered something else.””
“What?””
Daniel hesitated.
“She discovered Adrian was not just stealing money.””
The cold returned.
“What else?””
“He was collecting information.””
“Information?””
“About donors. Employees. People connected to the foundation.””
Julian frowned.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Leverage.””
The word hung in the air.
Adrian didn’t just build influence.
He built control.
“He found people’s weaknesses,” Daniel continued.
“Their mistakes. Their secrets. Then he made sure they knew he had them.””
My stomach tightened.
That sounded exactly like him.
The private comments.
The subtle threats.
The way he always seemed to know what people were afraid of.
Daniel looked at me.
“That included Lydia.””
“What did he know about her?””
Daniel looked away.
“That she was looking into him.””
I stared.
“That’s it?””
“No.””
His voice lowered.
“He knew she had a younger sister.””
My heart stopped.
“He knew about me?””
“Yes.””
The answer felt like ice.
“Adrian knew about me before we met?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
A thousand memories rushed through my mind.
The first time Adrian approached me.
The way he seemed to understand me instantly.
The way he knew exactly what to say.
I thought it was chemistry.
I thought it was fate.
Maybe it was research.
“No.””
The word escaped me.
Daniel’s expression softened.
“Elena…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“He didn’t.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Maybe.””
I turned toward him.
“You knew?””
His silence answered.
My chest tightened.
“How much did you know?””
Marcus looked ashamed.
“Enough.””
“Enough?””
My voice rose.
“You knew Adrian had looked into me?””
“We suspected.””
“And you said nothing?””
“We tried.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
The anger came faster now.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I pointed between them.
“You tried.””
I pointed toward the ballroom.
“He controlled me.””
I pointed at the phone.
“He watched me.””
I looked at my brothers.
“And you all kept secrets.””
Nobody spoke.
Because there was no defense.
Not really.
A car passed outside.
The headlights swept across the entrance.
For a second, everyone’s faces disappeared into darkness.
Then the light moved away.
And I saw them again.
The people who loved me.
The people who lied to me.
The people who might still be the only ones fighting for me.
“I need to read the letter.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
We moved to a private room inside the hotel.
A small conference room away from the ballroom.
The same place where donors had discussed saving lives earlier that evening.
Now we sat there trying to save mine.
I placed Lydia’s letter on the table.
My hands shook as I unfolded it.
The first line made me stop.
*Elena, if you are reading this, it means I failed to keep you away from Adrian.*
I swallowed.
Marcus looked down.
Julian closed his eyes.
Caleb stood near the door.
I continued.
*I need you to know something first. I never stopped loving you.*
My vision blurred.
A tear fell onto the page.
**I watched you grow up from a distance. I watched you become the woman I always knew you would be. Brave.
Kind. Stubborn.**
A small smile touched my face.
Because that sounded like a sister.
Someone who knew me.
Someone who remembered me.
*I wanted to come home. More than anything. But Adrian knew too much.*
I read slower.
*He knew if he couldn’t reach me, he would reach you.*
My breathing stopped.
The room felt smaller.
*When I disappeared, Marcus, Julian, and Caleb made a choice. They told everyone I was dead because it was the only story Adrian believed.*
I looked up.
My brothers looked broken.
*But there is one thing they don’t know.*
My heart raced.
I continued.
*Adrian did not find me because of a mistake. Someone gave him my location.*
I looked at Daniel.
Then at my brothers.
*Someone close to our family.*
The words sat there.
Everyone became still.
I read the next line.
*I spent years trying to discover who betrayed me.*
The page trembled.
*And I found out the person who helped Adrian was someone none of us suspected.*
I stopped.
“Keep going,” Marcus whispered.
I looked at him.
“You know?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
I looked back at the letter.
The next sentence was underlined.
*Elena, do not trust the person who tells you they protected you.*
My heart pounded.
Because everyone in the room had used those words.
Protected you.
I kept reading.
*Protection can become another kind of prison.*
The sentence hurt because it was true.
Then:
*The person who betrayed me is someone who loved me.*
The room went silent.
A sound came from the hallway.
A door closing.
Everyone looked toward it.
Caleb immediately moved.
But nobody was there.
Only footsteps fading away.
He opened the door.
Empty hallway.
When he returned, his expression was serious.
“We’re not alone.””
Daniel stood.
“We need to leave.””
Marcus nodded.
I folded the letter.
“Wait.””
Everyone stopped.
There was one more line.
One final sentence.
Written smaller than the others.
Almost like Lydia was afraid someone would see.
I read it.
And the blood drained from my face.
*The person who betrayed me is the same person who helped Adrian choose you.*
I looked up.
The room was frozen.
Because suddenly, the question was no longer who betrayed Lydia.
The question was why.
Why would someone help Adrian find me?
Why would someone guide him toward me?
Why would someone place me directly in the path of the man who destroyed my sister’s life?
My phone vibrated.
A new message.
This time, there was no number.
No name.
Just a photograph.
I opened it.
And my hands went numb.
It was a picture of me on my wedding day.
Standing beside Adrian.
Smiling.
Happy.
Unaware.
But someone had written across the image.
Three words.
*She chose you.*
Below it was another message.
*Ask your husband why.*
I stared at the screen.
Because suddenly I remembered something.
Something small.
Something I had ignored for eight years.
The first time Adrian met me, he didn’t ask my name.
He already knew it.
May you like
And the person who introduced us…
Was standing in this room.
