Chapter 7: The Memory I Was Never Supposed to Lose
The envelope felt impossibly heavy in my hand.
Not because of the paper inside.
Because of the question written across the front.
*Open this only when Adrian believes he has won.*
My handwriting.
My words.
My warning.
But I didn’t remember writing it.
I stared at the envelope as if it belonged to someone else.
Someone who looked like me.
Someone who lived my life.
Someone who knew something I had somehow forgotten.
“What does that mean?””
My voice sounded distant.
Nobody answered.
Not Adrian.
Not Marcus.
Not Daniel.
That silence told me more than any explanation could.
“You all know.””
I looked around the ballroom.
“You all know what happened.””
Marcus took a step forward.
“Evelyn, you need to sit down.””
“No.””
I held up the envelope.
“I need the truth.””
Daniel looked devastated.
Marcus looked exhausted.
And Adrian…
Adrian looked entertained.
Because for the first time tonight, I was confused.
And Adrian loved confusion.
It was where he was strongest.
“You really don’t remember,” he said softly.
I turned toward him.
“Remember what?””
His smile grew.
“The night you found out.””
My heart skipped.
“The night I found out what?””
He looked at Marcus.
Then Daniel.
“You didn’t tell her?””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“Enough.””
“No.””
Adrian laughed.
“This is perfect.””
He stepped closer.
“After all these years, she finally gets to hear the truth.””
Daniel moved between us.
“Don’t do this.””
Adrian looked at him.
“Why? Afraid she’ll remember?””
That word.
Remember.
It struck something inside me.
A strange feeling.
A door almost opening.
A memory buried somewhere deep.
I closed my eyes.
And suddenly—
A flash.
A dark hallway.
My grandfather’s study.
A glass breaking.
Someone shouting.
My own voice.
“No.””
I opened my eyes quickly.
The ballroom returned.
Everyone was staring.
Marcus noticed.
“You saw something.””
I swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
“Yes, you do.””
His voice was gentle.
Too gentle.
And somehow that made me more afraid.
“What happened to me?””
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel whispered:
“You had an accident.””
I looked at him.
“What kind of accident?””
He looked away.
“Three years ago.””
The room became silent.
Three years.
I remembered that year.
Or at least I thought I did.
A year filled with stress.
A year when I became more dependent on Adrian.
A year when I started forgetting small things.
Appointments.
Conversations.
Details.
I always blamed exhaustion.
I blamed work.
I blamed grief.
But now…
I wasn’t sure.
“Tell me.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
My voice was sharper.
“You should have.””
He closed his eyes.
“You were in a car accident.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“You hit a tree on the road near the old estate.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Your injuries were physical, but the doctors said the trauma affected your memory.””
I felt cold.
“My memory?””
“Yes.””
“How much did I lose?””
Nobody spoke.
That was the worst answer.
I looked at Adrian.
He looked away.
And somehow that hurt more.
Because Adrian knew.
Of course he knew.
He knew everything about me.
Including the parts of myself I had lost.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Marcus’s face tightened.
“Because you asked us not to.””
I froze.
“What?””
He reached into the folder.
And pulled out another document.
A medical report.
My name.
My signature.
I took it.
The words blurred.
But one sentence stood out.
*Patient requests limited disclosure of traumatic events until she is emotionally prepared.*
I shook my head.
“I would never say that.””
Marcus looked at me sadly.
“You did.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Did I?””
He nodded.
“You were terrified.””
“Of what?””
His eyes moved toward Adrian.
And I felt my stomach drop.
“Of him.””
The ballroom went silent.
Adrian’s expression changed.
Not much.
But enough.
The confidence slipped.
“You’re blaming me for an accident?””
Daniel looked at him.
“I’m blaming you for what happened before it.””
I turned toward Daniel.
“What happened before?””
He hesitated.
Then he said:
“The night of the accident was the night you discovered everything.””
My breath stopped.
“Everything?””
Daniel nodded.
“The affair.””
My chest tightened.
“The money.””
A pause.
“The documents.””
My fingers tightened around the envelope.
“You’re saying I knew?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Adrian.
“You knew I knew.””
He didn’t answer.
And suddenly, memories started forcing their way back.
A hotel receipt.
A conversation.
Adrian’s phone.
A folder on his desk.
My own voice saying:
“I know what you’re doing.””
The image was blurry.
But real.
I pressed a hand to my forehead.
Another memory.
Adrian standing in the hallway.
Angry.
Not the calm man from tonight.
The mask was gone.
“You don’t understand what you’re risking.””
My own voice.
“You’re threatening me?””
His voice.
“No, Evelyn.””
A pause.
“I’m warning you.””
I opened my eyes.
The ballroom was spinning.
“You threatened me.””
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“I was angry.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You were afraid.””
The room went quiet.
Because that was the truth.
For eleven years, Adrian had never been afraid of me.
Until tonight.
Until I stopped being the woman who forgave everything.
Marcus looked at the envelope.
“Open it.””
My fingers shook as I broke the seal.
Inside was a letter.
Again.
My handwriting.
But this one was different.
The words were rushed.
Uneven.
Like I had written it while afraid.
*Evelyn,*
*If you are reading this, then something happened and you need to know the truth.*
I swallowed.
*You cannot trust Adrian.*
A chill moved through me.
*You cannot trust anyone who tells you to forget.*
My eyes moved faster.
*The accident was not an accident.*
The room disappeared.
I stopped breathing.
I looked up.
Nobody moved.
Then I continued.
*I found proof that Adrian was planning to take everything. He knows I know. I am afraid.*
My hands trembled.
*But the worst part is not Adrian.*
Again.
That sentence.
The same warning.
The same pattern.
*The worst part is that someone close to me helped him.*
I looked toward Marcus.
Then Daniel.
The letter continued.
*I cannot remember everything after the argument. There are gaps. Missing hours. Missing conversations.*
My heartbeat increased.
*If I forget, I need you to remember this: Adrian did not save me.*
I stopped.
Because that sentence made no sense.
Adrian had told everyone he saved my life.
He had told me.
After the accident, he was the one who stayed beside me.
The one who helped me recover.
The one who cared for me.
I looked at him.
And suddenly, the story I had believed for three years began falling apart.
The letter continued.
*He found me after the crash. But before that, he was the reason I was on that road.*
A gasp escaped someone in the room.
I didn’t notice who.
I could only stare.
My hands went numb.
Adrian’s face was unreadable.
But Marcus looked terrified.
“Evelyn…”
I looked at him.
“What happened that night?””
No one answered.
Then Adrian spoke.
Quietly.
“You really want to know?””
I turned.
“Yes.””
He smiled.
Not the confident smile from before.
Something darker.
Something colder.
“Fine.””
He stepped closer.
“Three years ago, you found out the truth.””
My heart pounded.
“And you tried to destroy me.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“You threatened to expose me.””
“That’s because you were stealing from me.””
His expression changed.
“No.””
He leaned closer.
“Because you remembered.””
I froze.
“Remembered what?””
Adrian smiled.
“The one thing your grandfather spent years trying to hide.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Adrian.””
But it was too late.
Adrian looked directly at me.
“You weren’t chosen to inherit the Whitmore empire because your grandfather loved you more than Daniel.””
My chest tightened.
“Then why?””
His voice dropped.
“Because your grandfather knew something about you.””
The ballroom went completely silent.
Something about me.
Something I didn’t know.
Adrian whispered:
“He knew you were the only person who could bring the entire empire down.””
I stared at him.
“That’s impossible.””
He smiled.
“Is it?””
Then he reached into his pocket.
And pulled out a small black drive.
A drive I recognized.
Because it had my initials engraved on it.
The same drive I thought had disappeared three years ago.
“I found this the night of your accident.””
My blood ran cold.
“What’s on it?””
Adrian looked at me.
“The truth about why your grandfather left everything to you.””
He placed it on the table.
And then he said the words that made the entire room freeze.
“Your grandfather wasn’t protecting you from me, Evelyn.””
May you like
A pause.
“He was protecting everyone from you.””
