Chapter 6: The Last Conversation With My Grandfather

The photograph trembled in my hand.

Not because of what it showed.

Because of what it meant.

My grandfather.

Two days before he died.

Standing beside someone I never expected to see.

Daniel.

My brother.

The message remained on the screen.

*Your grandfather knew the truth about Daniel.*

I read it again.

And again.

Like the words would somehow change.

They didn’t.

I slowly raised my eyes.

Daniel was still standing across the ballroom.

His face was already pale.

Too pale.

Because he knew.

He knew what I was looking at.

“You knew.””

My voice was barely above a whisper.

The room went silent.

Daniel swallowed.

“Evelyn…”

“You knew he knew.””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

The pain I felt in that moment was different from everything else that happened that night.

The lashes hurt my body.

Adrian’s betrayal hurt my heart.

But Daniel’s silence hurt something deeper.

It hurt the part of me that still believed family was the one place where I was safe.

“You knew Grandfather suspected you.””

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.””

A few people in the ballroom gasped quietly.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Like he had been waiting for this moment.

I turned toward him.

“You knew too.””

Marcus didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

The word felt like a slap.

I stared at him.

“You all knew.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Evelyn, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“No, you listen to me.””

The entire room froze.

“I spent eleven years believing I was building a life with someone I loved.””

I looked at Adrian.

“I spent years believing my husband was my partner.””

Then Daniel.

“I spent my entire life believing my brother would protect me.””

Then Marcus.

“And I believed the people my grandfather trusted would tell me the truth.””

My hands shook.

“But everyone decided I was too fragile to handle it.””

Nobody spoke.

Because they knew.

They knew I was right.

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“We were trying to protect you.””

I laughed quietly.

“Everyone always says that after they hurt you.””

The words stayed in the air.

Adrian looked amused.

Of course he did.

He loved watching people break apart.

Because chaos gave him control.

“You want to know the truth, Evelyn?””

I turned toward him.

“No.””

His smile faded.

“I wasn’t asking.””

He stepped closer.

“The truth is your grandfather didn’t trust any of us.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“Stop talking.””

But Adrian continued.

“He knew Daniel could be influenced.””

Daniel looked away.

“He knew Marcus was loyal to the family but too emotional to make difficult decisions.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“And he knew you…”

Adrian paused.

My chest tightened.

“Me?””

He smiled.

“He knew you were kind.””

A strange silence followed.

Not because it was a compliment.

Because coming from Adrian, it sounded like an insult.

“He knew you saw the best in people.””

Adrian looked around the room.

“And that was your weakness.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

His eyebrow lifted.

“No?””

I shook my head.

“My kindness was never my weakness.””

I looked at Daniel.

“People using it was.””

For the first time, Adrian had no immediate response.

Marcus walked toward me and handed me another envelope.

“This was found with the others.””

I looked at the handwriting.

My grandfather’s.

“Why didn’t you give it to me before?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Because your grandfather left instructions.””

I frowned.

“What instructions?””

Marcus looked at Adrian.

Then Daniel.

“He said the letter should only be opened when all three people involved were present.””

My stomach tightened.

“All three?””

Marcus nodded.

“You.””

He looked at Daniel.

“Daniel.””

Then Adrian.

“Adrian.””

I stared at the envelope.

My grandfather had planned this.

Years ago.

He knew there would be a moment when we would all stand in the same room.

He knew Adrian would reveal himself.

He knew Daniel would have to face what he did.

Slowly, I opened it.

Inside was a single page.

The handwriting was shaky.

Older.

But still unmistakable.

*Evelyn,*

*If you are reading this, then my fears were correct.*

I stopped breathing.

*Adrian Cole is not the first person to underestimate you. He will not be the last.*

My eyes moved across the page.

*But before you judge Daniel, understand this: betrayal and weakness are not always the same thing.*

I looked up.

Daniel was crying silently.

I continued.

*Your brother made a terrible decision. A decision that hurt you. But he was not the architect of this plan.*

My eyes moved toward Adrian.

His expression changed.

Just slightly.

*The person who planned this began preparing years before my death.*

A cold feeling moved through me.

*And the person who helped him is someone I warned you about.*

I looked at Marcus.

Then Daniel.

Then Adrian.

Who?

The letter continued.

*Evelyn, trust actions, not promises. Trust patterns, not apologies. The truth is always hidden in what people repeatedly do.*

I swallowed.

Because that was exactly what I had ignored.

Adrian’s pattern.

The lies.

The control.

The isolation.

The way every problem somehow became my fault.

The way every apology came with a condition.

I kept reading.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

And my hands started shaking.

*The most dangerous person in this room is not Adrian.*

Silence.

My eyes lifted.

Everyone noticed.

Marcus stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because the next words were impossible.

*The person who helped Adrian was someone I trusted with my own life.*

My grandfather’s handwriting continued.

*Someone who has been protecting Adrian since the beginning.*

The ballroom seemed to shrink.

Because everyone in that room had a history with my grandfather.

Everyone.

Marcus.

Daniel.

Adrian.

Me.

Then the final line appeared.

*Evelyn, do not forgive anyone until you know why they betrayed you.*

I lowered the letter.

My voice was quiet.

“There’s someone else.””

Nobody spoke.

Adrian smiled.

Not because he was innocent.

Because he knew something.

“You’re finally asking the right questions.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

His smile widened.

“You’ll have to ask Marcus.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus went completely still.

My heart dropped.

“No.””

Marcus looked at me.

And that was the first time all night I saw genuine fear in his eyes.

Not Adrian’s fake confidence.

Not Daniel’s guilt.

Real fear.

“What did you do?””

Marcus opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Adrian laughed.

“There it is.””

Marcus looked furious.

“Adrian, you don’t understand what you’re doing.””

“No.””

Adrian smiled.

“I understand perfectly.””

He pointed at Marcus.

“Tell her.””

Marcus said nothing.

“Tell her why you never gave her the letters.””

Silence.

“Tell her why you hid the investigation.””

Silence.

“Tell her why your name appears on the first transfer authorization.””

My blood ran cold.

I looked at Marcus.

“Is that true?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

And that was the answer.

Daniel whispered:

“Evelyn…”

But I couldn’t hear him.

I couldn’t hear anyone.

Because the person I thought came to save me was standing in front of me.

And he had secrets too.

Marcus finally spoke.

“I can explain.””

I stared at him.

“Everyone says that.””

His face fell.

Then he reached into his jacket.

Slowly.

Carefully.

He removed a small envelope.

But this envelope was different.

It wasn’t old.

It wasn’t from my grandfather.

It was new.

My name was written on the front.

By someone else.

Someone whose handwriting I recognized instantly.

My own.

My blood turned cold.

Because the date written on the envelope was impossible.

It was dated three years before my grandfather died.

And underneath my name was a sentence.

*Open this only when Adrian believes he has won.*

I looked at Marcus.

“Why do I have a letter I don’t remember writing?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Because you wrote it…”

May you like

He looked at Adrian.

“…before you forgot.””
