Chapter 8: The Betrayal Hidden Behind A Familiar Face

I stared at the signature.

*Vanessa Collins.*

For a moment, I couldn’t understand what I was reading.

My mind kept rejecting it.

Vanessa.

The woman who had given us evidence.

The woman who had warned me about Daniel.

The woman who had told me she was afraid of him.

The woman who claimed she wanted the truth exposed.

She had paid his bail.

“She helped him?”” Rachel whispered.

Nobody answered.

Because nobody had an explanation.

Officer Lewis took the document back.

“We’re investigating.””

I looked at him.

“But you said she was helping us.””

“We believed she was.””

The word believed hurt.

Because I knew that feeling.

Believing someone was safe.

Believing someone was on your side.

Then discovering you were wrong.

Claire stood up suddenly.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She shook her head.

“Vanessa wouldn’t do that.””

I looked at her.

“You know her?””

Claire’s expression changed.

“She was there when I left Daniel.””

The room went quiet.

“What do you mean?””

Claire sat back down slowly.

“Vanessa was the person who helped me disappear.””

I frowned.

“Then why would she help him now?””

Claire didn’t answer.

And that scared me.

Because maybe she didn’t know.

Maybe none of us knew.

Daniel called me that night.

I almost didn’t answer.

But something inside me wanted to hear his voice.

Not because I missed him.

Because I needed to understand.

I needed to know if the man I married had ever truly existed.

I pressed accept.

“Emily.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

I said nothing.

“You’re making a mistake.””

I closed my eyes.

The same words.

Always the same.

“You hurt me.””

A pause.

Then:

“I never wanted that.””

I looked toward the hospital window.

“You dragged me outside in the middle of the night.””

“I was angry.””

“You forced a pregnant woman to carry water until she collapsed.””

“I lost control.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“Daniel, you don’t lose control.””

Silence.

“You plan.””

The silence lasted longer.

Then his voice changed.

“You think you know everything now.””

“No.””

I looked at the evidence folders beside my bed.

“I know enough.””

“You found some papers.””

“I found your notebook.””

That got his attention.

For the first time, his calm disappeared.

“You shouldn’t have touched that.””

I froze.

There it was.

Not denial.

Not confusion.

Anger.

Fear.

“You admit it exists.””

Another pause.

Then:

“You don’t understand what you found.””

“Then explain.””

He didn’t answer.

“Explain Marcus.””

Silence.

“Explain Claire.””

Silence.

“Explain all those women.””

His breathing changed.

And I knew.

I had hit the truth.

Finally, he spoke.

“Emily.””

His voice became softer.

Almost gentle.

“Think carefully about what happens next.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Is that a threat?””

“No.””

A pause.

“It’s advice.””

I stared at the wall.

“Goodbye, Daniel.””

Before he could respond, I ended the call.

My hands were shaking.

But I noticed something.

The shaking wasn’t fear anymore.

It was anger.

The next morning, Vanessa came to the police station.

Alone.

Officer Lewis asked me not to meet her privately.

I agreed.

She sat across from us.

Her face looked exhausted.

“Emily.””

I didn’t answer.

She looked at the documents on the table.

“I know what you found.””

“You paid his bail.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because I had to.””

I almost laughed.

“No.””

Her eyes lifted.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She took a deep breath.

“Daniel contacted me two days before he was arrested.””

“Why?””

“He threatened me.””

The room became quiet.

“What did he threaten?””

Vanessa looked at Claire.

Then back at me.

“He knew where I was living.””

My stomach tightened.

“He found you?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

Officer Lewis leaned forward.

“What exactly did he say?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“He told me if I didn’t help him, he would release everything.””

“Everything?””

She nodded.

“Private recordings.””

My blood ran cold.

“What recordings?””

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“Daniel collected information about everyone.””

Claire whispered:

“He always did.””

Vanessa continued.

“He recorded conversations. He saved messages. He kept things people didn’t know existed.””

I remembered the cameras.

The notebook.

The documents.

Of course.

Daniel didn’t just control people.

He collected pieces of them.

Weapons.

“If I refused to pay his bail,” Vanessa said, “he said he would release things that would destroy my life.””

Officer Lewis looked serious.

“Why didn’t you come to us?””

She laughed bitterly.

“Because Daniel knows exactly how to make people afraid.””

The room fell silent.

I understood.

Because I had lived it.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because I was ashamed.””

“Of what?””

“Because I helped him once.””

That answer shocked me.

“What?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Years ago, before Marcus died, I helped Daniel hide something.””

Claire looked at her.

“Vanessa…”

“I thought I was protecting him.””

She looked at me.

“I was wrong.””

Vanessa told us the truth.

The truth about Marcus.

The truth about Daniel.

The truth about herself.

Years ago, Daniel convinced Vanessa that Marcus was betraying him.

“He told me Marcus was stealing money.””

“But Marcus wasn’t.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I helped Daniel create a false report.””

Claire looked horrified.

“And when Marcus died?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I realized too late.””

The room was silent.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you go to the police?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because Daniel had already destroyed my reputation.””

I understood.

He didn’t need everyone to believe him.

He only needed people to doubt his victims.

One doubt.

One question.

One excuse.

That was enough.

Officer Lewis leaned forward.

“So why help him now?””

Vanessa reached into her bag.

She placed a small device on the table.

“I didn’t.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

“I paid his bail.””

She looked at me.

“But not to help him escape.””

My heart started racing.

“Then why?””

Vanessa pushed the device forward.

“Because I needed him outside.””

Nobody spoke.

“What are you saying?””

She looked directly at me.

“I needed Daniel to think he won.””

Officer Lewis picked up the device.

“What is this?””

“A recording.””

“Of what?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Of Daniel admitting everything.””

My breath caught.

“You recorded him?””

She nodded.

“He thought I was still afraid.””

A strange feeling moved through me.

Not relief.

Not yet.

Because I had learned something.

With Daniel, every secret had another secret underneath.

Officer Lewis connected the device.

The room filled with Daniel’s voice.

“Vanessa, you know how this works.””

Everyone froze.

His voice was clear.

Confident.

“You protect me, and I protect you.””

Vanessa’s voice followed.

“And if I don’t?””

Daniel laughed.

“You already know what happens to people who betray me.””

A pause.

Then Vanessa asked:

“What about Emily?””

Silence.

Then Daniel answered.

A sentence that made my entire body go cold.

“Emily was supposed to disappear quietly.””

Nobody moved.

The recording continued.

“But she made things complicated.””

Officer Lewis looked at me.

I couldn’t breathe.

Then Daniel said the words that changed everything.

“The baby is the problem.””

My hand immediately went to my stomach.

Because for the first time…

I understood.

The well was never about punishment.

The insurance policy was never the end goal.

Daniel wasn’t waiting for me to leave.

He was waiting for something else.

May you like

And the reason he had targeted me…

Was the child I was carrying.
