Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Daniel’s Darkest Secret
Rachel stared at the phone screen for almost a full minute.
She didn’t blink.
She didn’t speak.
She just looked at the photograph as if her mind was refusing to accept what her eyes were seeing.
“Rachel,” I whispered.
She slowly lifted her gaze.
“No.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“No, that can’t be possible.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“You know her?””
Rachel looked away.
That was the answer before she even spoke.
“Yes.””
My stomach sank.
“Who is she?””
Rachel swallowed.
“Her name is Vanessa.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But the way Rachel said it told me it meant everything to her.
“Who is Vanessa?””
Rachel sat down slowly.
“She was Daniel’s girlfriend before you.””
The room felt colder.
I looked back at the picture.
A younger Daniel.
Marcus.
And a woman standing beside them.
A woman who had somehow been connected to the death Daniel wanted everyone to forget.
“You never told me about her.””
Rachel shook her head.
“Because I thought she was gone.””
“Gone?””
Rachel nodded.
“After Marcus died, Vanessa disappeared.””
“Why?””
She hesitated.
“Because she knew what happened.””
A silence filled the room.
I looked toward the door.
Security stood outside.
The hospital was safe.
But somehow, I still felt trapped.
“Tell me everything.””
Rachel looked at me.
“I should have told you years ago.””
“Yes.””
My voice surprised both of us.
It wasn’t angry.
It was tired.
“I needed someone to tell me the truth.””
Rachel lowered her head.
“You’re right.””
She took a deep breath.
“Daniel and Marcus were best friends since college. They started businesses together. They trusted each other with everything.””
“What changed?””
“Money.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
Rachel continued.
“Daniel always wanted more. More success. More control. More respect.””
I looked down at my hands.
“That sounds like him.””
Rachel nodded.
“Marcus discovered Daniel had been hiding money from their company.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Stealing?””
Rachel didn’t answer immediately.
But she didn’t need to.
“Marcus confronted him.””
“When?””
“About a month before he died.””
I looked at the newspaper article.
“Then the accident happened.””
Rachel nodded.
“Yes.””
“And Vanessa?””
“She was there that night.””
A chill moved through me.
“She saw what happened?””
Rachel looked at me.
“She saw enough.””
The next morning, Officer Lewis returned with an update.
“Emily, we found something connected to the photograph.””
I sat up.
“What?””
He placed a small evidence bag on the table.
Inside was a USB drive.
“Where did you find this?””
“In a hidden compartment inside Daniel’s desk.””
My heart raced.
“Did he know it was there?””
“We don’t know.””
Officer Lewis looked at Rachel.
“But someone who knew about his past may have placed it there.””
Rachel immediately understood.
“Vanessa.””
Officer Lewis nodded.
“We’re trying to locate her.””
I stared at the USB drive.
“What’s on it?””
“We don’t know yet.””
“Can we watch it?””
He looked at me carefully.
“Emily, it may contain difficult information.””
I almost smiled.
After everything I had learned, I wasn’t sure anything could surprise me anymore.
“Play it.””
Officer Lewis connected the drive to his laptop.
The screen was dark.
For a few seconds, nothing happened.
Then a video appeared.
The quality was poor.
Old.
Grainy.
But the voices were clear.
Daniel’s voice.
My entire body froze.
“Marcus, you don’t understand what you’re doing.””
Rachel covered her mouth.
The video showed two men standing in what looked like a parking area.
Daniel was younger.
But his voice was the same.
Cold.
Calm.
Marcus stood across from him.
“You think I’m just going to let you destroy everything?””
Marcus said.
Daniel laughed.
“You always thought you were smarter than everyone.””
“You stole from the company.””
“Watch your words.””
“You’re afraid.””
Daniel stepped closer.
The video shook.
Then Marcus said something that made my blood run cold.
“You’re going to do the same thing to her, aren’t you?””
Daniel went still.
“Who?””
“Your next wife.””
The room went silent.
Rachel looked at me.
I couldn’t breathe.
The video continued.
“You always choose people who trust you,” Marcus said.
“You make them dependent on you.””
“You make them feel like they have nobody else.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Be careful.””
Marcus laughed.
“No. You be careful.””
The screen suddenly went dark.
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone in that room understood.
Marcus wasn’t talking about a random woman.
He was talking about a pattern.
A pattern Daniel had continued with me.
Officer Lewis closed the laptop.
“This changes the investigation.””
I looked at him.
“Can it prove what happened?””
“We need more evidence.””
I nodded.
Because I understood now.
Daniel had spent years creating stories.
I needed facts.
Not emotions.
Not memories.
Proof.
That afternoon, Vanessa contacted us.
Not through Daniel.
Not through a lawyer.
Through Rachel.
The message was simple.
“I know you found the video. Meet me if you want the rest.””
Officer Lewis didn’t want me going.
“You’re still vulnerable.””
“I need answers.””
“We can arrange protection.””
I nodded.
“I want protection.””
For the first time, I said it without shame.
I wasn’t trying to prove I was strong.
I was trying to stay alive.
Vanessa chose a quiet coffee shop far from town.
She arrived ten minutes early.
I recognized her immediately.
Not because I had seen her before.
Because she had the same expression I had seen in myself.
Someone who had spent years carrying something heavy.
She sat across from me.
“I’m sorry.””
Those were her first words.
I studied her.
“You knew Daniel.””
“Yes.””
“You knew Marcus.””
“Yes.””
“You knew what Daniel was capable of.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you warn me?””
The question came out sharper than I intended.
Vanessa looked down.
“Because I was afraid.””
I almost laughed.
“I was afraid too.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
“Do you?””
Her eyes met mine.
“Yes.””
She reached into her bag and placed a folder on the table.
“Inside this folder is everything I kept.””
I didn’t touch it.
“Why now?””
“Because I saw the news.””
“What news?””
“Your neighbor’s statement.””
My heart tightened.
“How?””
“Daniel still has people watching for him.””
That sentence made my blood run cold.
“People?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He doesn’t do everything himself.””
I looked at Rachel.
Then back at Vanessa.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa leaned closer.
“Daniel has always had someone help him clean up his problems.””
I opened the folder.
The first page was a photograph.
The second page was a bank transfer.
The third page was a name.
A name that made my hands freeze.
Because it wasn’t Daniel.
It wasn’t Vanessa.
It wasn’t Marcus.
It was someone else.
Someone who had been standing beside me during my entire marriage.
Someone who had comforted me.
Someone who had told me Daniel was just “under pressure.””
I looked up at Vanessa.
“Why is this person involved?””
Vanessa’s face turned pale.
“Because that person wasn’t helping Daniel hide the truth.””
I stared at her.
“Then what were they doing?””
May you like
Vanessa whispered:
“They were helping Daniel create the next victim.””
