Chapter 7: The Father Who Never Died
For three seconds, nobody spoke.
The waves crashed against the rocks beneath the lighthouse, and the wind pulled at my hair, but I barely heard either sound.
My father was alive.
The man I'd buried in my heart for three years, the man whose photographs I kept beside my bed, the man whose last voicemail I still couldn't delete, was supposedly alive.
I looked at Margaret.
Then at my mother.
Finally, I turned toward Julian.
He stood beneath the lighthouse beam with his hands in his pockets, wearing the same expensive suit he'd worn when he kissed me goodbye at the airport. Sienna stood beside him, her diamond necklace glittering against her pale throat.
Julian smiled.
Not the smile he used in board meetings.
Not the charming smile that had won me over three years ago.
This was the smile of a man who believed he had finally regained control.
"Surprised, sweetheart?""
I couldn't find my voice.
He tilted his head.
"Come on, Clara. Say something.""
My mother stepped between us.
"Don't speak to her.""
Julian laughed.
"You're hardly in a position to give me orders, Evelyn.""
My mother's face went white.
"You promised you would leave her alone.""
"I promised a lot of things.""
He glanced at me.
"Unfortunately, your father taught me that promises are only useful until circumstances change.""
I felt my hands curl into fists.
"Where is he?""
Julian's smile faded slightly.
"Who?""
"My father. Where is Robert Bennett?""
"Somewhere safe.""
"Take me to him.""
"Not so fast.""
He gestured toward Margaret.
"First, I'd like to understand why your lawyer has been interfering with a perfectly legitimate business arrangement.""
Margaret closed her folder.
"Your arrangement involves forged authorizations, concealed financial transfers, and an attempt to obtain control of shares you have no legal right to possess.""
Julian chuckled.
"That's a serious accusation.""
"Then you should have no trouble answering serious questions.""
Margaret removed a document from her folder.
"This is the original trust amendment signed by Robert Bennett three months before his reported death. It specifically prohibits you from exercising voting authority over Clara's controlling shares without independent approval.""
Julian's expression hardened.
Sienna stared at the document.
"You told me the amendment had been destroyed.""
He turned sharply.
"Not now.""
She recoiled.
I looked at her.
"How long have you known about the trust?""
Sienna pressed her lips together.
Julian answered for her.
"Long enough to understand that your father was making business decisions based on emotion rather than logic.""
"My father made those decisions to protect me.""
"Your father made them because he couldn't accept that his company needed new leadership.""
"Is that what you call stealing from him?""
Julian's eyes flashed.
"Watch your mouth.""
The command was so familiar that, for one awful second, I felt the old instinct to apologize.
Then I remembered sitting alone in economy while he drank champagne with Sienna.
I remembered the documents he'd placed in front of me.
I remembered him telling her he would finally get rid of me.
"No," I said.
"You watch yours.""
Something changed in his face.
The charming husband disappeared.
The man underneath looked cold, exhausted, and furious.
"You think you're powerful because you've inherited a company," he said.
"You have no idea what it takes to run one. Your father built a business, but he never understood what it needed to survive.""
"And you do?""
"I know how to make it profitable. I know how to expand it. I know how to turn your inheritance into something that actually matters.""
"You mean something you control.""
"Someone has to control it.""
"Someone other than you, apparently.""
Julian took a step toward me.
Thomas immediately moved between us.
"Stay where you are.""
Julian glanced at him.
"You really should have stayed dead, Reed.""
Thomas's expression remained calm.
"You really should have chosen a different victim.""
For a moment, the two men stared at each other.
Then Margaret raised her voice.
"Enough. Clara deserves the truth.""
She turned toward me.
"Three years ago, your father discovered that Richard and Julian had been diverting money through shell companies. He intended to report them, but before he could do so, he received a warning that his life was in danger.""
My mother lowered her head.
"I begged him to leave with me.""
Margaret nodded.
"He refused because he believed leaving would expose Clara to greater danger. Instead, he arranged for a private medical facility to help him disappear if the threat became immediate.""
I stared at her.
"Disappear how?""
"By allowing the world to believe he had died.""
My heart hammered.
"The man at the funeral wasn't my father?""
Margaret shook her head.
"No. The body was a different patient whose death had been misidentified through a deliberately compromised chain of records. The hospital documents were altered, and the funeral arrangements were handled by people Richard trusted.""
I felt sick.
"Then why did nobody tell me?""
My mother stepped closer.
"Because Richard had threatened you. Your father believed that if you thought he was dead, you would become less useful to the people trying to take the company. They assumed you would eventually sign over control rather than investigate the suspicious transactions.""
"And Julian?""
She looked toward my husband.
"Julian helped them convince you that he was protecting your interests.""
I turned to him.
"Did you know my father was alive when you married me?""
Julian didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"Did you know?""
"Yes.""
The word came out quietly.
It still hit me harder than anything else he'd said.
I swallowed.
"You kissed me at the altar knowing my father was alive.""
"I did what I had to do.""
"You stood beside me while I cried about him.""
"I was trying to keep you calm.""
"You told me you loved me.""
His jaw tightened.
"Clara, feelings are complicated.""
"No. They aren't. You either love someone enough to protect them, or you use them because you know they'll trust you.""
He looked away.
For the first time, he had nothing to say.
Then Sienna spoke.
"Julian, you told me she already knew.""
He spun toward her.
"Be quiet.""
"You said her father had agreed to the arrangement. You said the marriage was only to make the transfer easier.""
My stomach turned.
I looked at Julian.
"Was that why you married me?""
He rubbed his face.
"Your father was going to transfer the shares into a new trust. I needed your cooperation to complete the restructuring.""
"So you married me to steal my company.""
"I married you because I loved you, and then circumstances changed.""
I almost laughed.
"That's the most pathetic explanation I've ever heard.""
His expression hardened.
"You have no idea what I've sacrificed.""
"What have you sacrificed, Julian? Other than your conscience?""
He moved toward me again.
Thomas blocked him.
"That's enough.""
Julian glanced around the lighthouse grounds. His eyes lingered on the dark road, the waiting vehicles, and the people who had once seemed like obstacles to his plan.
Then he looked back at Margaret.
"What do you want?""
"The truth.""
"You have it.""
"No. We have pieces of it. We have the ledger, the trust amendment, and evidence of your financial transactions. But we still don't know who arranged the attack on Thomas, who altered the hospital records, or what happened during Robert's final hours before he disappeared.""
Julian's face changed.
"You'll never prove any of that.""
Margaret opened her folder again.
"Perhaps not tonight. But we have enough evidence to freeze the attempted transfer and refer the suspicious transactions for investigation.""
For the first time, Julian looked genuinely frightened.
He turned to me.
"Clara, you don't have to do this.""
I stared at him.
"You had every opportunity to tell me the truth.""
"Because I knew you'd react like this.""
"Like what?""
"Emotionally. Impulsively. You'd destroy the company just to punish me.""
I shook my head.
"You keep confusing justice with revenge.""
He took a slow breath.
"Think carefully. If the board learns about these accusations, Bennett Global could lose investors. Employees could lose their jobs. Everything your father built could collapse.""
I looked at Margaret.
"Can we protect the company while investigating?""
"Yes," she said.
"But we need the original trust documents and the complete ledger. We also need Robert to confirm his instructions.""
I turned back to Julian.
"Then take me to my father.""
His expression went blank.
"That isn't possible.""
"Why?""
"Because he's not here.""
"Where is he?""
Julian said nothing.
My mother stepped forward.
"Julian, you promised me he was safe.""
"I said he was alive.""
"Where is he?""
He looked at Sienna.
She was crying now, her mascara streaking beneath her eyes.
"Tell her," Sienna whispered.
Julian's face twisted.
"Shut up.""
"You told me he'd be moved tonight. You said everything would be finished before morning.""
My blood turned to ice.
"Moved where?""
Sienna looked at me.
For the first time, she seemed less like the woman who'd stolen my honeymoon and more like someone who had finally realized the consequences of her choices.
"I don't know the exact location," she whispered.
"But Julian has been receiving instructions from a private medical facility on the other side of the island.""
Margaret immediately pulled out her phone.
"Which facility?""
"I don't know. The messages were encrypted.""
"Who sent them?""
Sienna glanced at Julian.
"Richard.""
Julian lunged toward her.
"You stupid—"
Thomas caught his arm.
"Don't.""
Julian struggled briefly, then stopped.
Sienna backed away, sobbing.
"I didn't know they would keep him there. Julian said your father was recovering. He said it was temporary.""
I stared at my husband.
"Why is my father in a medical facility?""
He said nothing.
Then Margaret's phone rang.
She answered, listened for several seconds, and turned pale.
"What happened?"" I demanded.
She ended the call.
"That was Daniel. He checked the northern road. There's a vehicle leaving the area with two men inside. One of them appears to be Richard Bennett.""
I looked toward the road.
"Where are they going?""
Margaret looked at Julian.
"According to the information Daniel received, they're heading toward a private clinic in Lahaina.""
My heart pounded.
"Then that's where we're going.""
Julian's expression changed.
"Clara, wait.""
I turned toward him.
"Why?""
He swallowed.
May you like
Then he whispered the one thing that made every hair on my arms stand up.
"Because if you find your father tonight, you'll learn why he never came home.""
