Chapter 2: The Envelope in My Father's Handwriting
The first thing I noticed when we landed in Maui was how easily Julian returned to being a loving husband.
He waited near the jet bridge, his expensive watch catching the sunlight streaming through the terminal windows, and greeted me with a smile that belonged on a honeymoon advertisement.
"There she is.""
He reached for my suitcase.
I held on for a second longer than necessary.
"How was economy?""
"Educational.""
He laughed, apparently deciding I was making a joke.
"Listen, sweetheart, I know the seating arrangement wasn't ideal. I'll make it up to you.""
"Will you?""
"Of course. I've booked something special for tonight.""
Sienna emerged behind him, wearing oversized sunglasses and carrying a shopping bag from the airport boutique.
"Julian, darling, did you remember to tell her about the reservation?""
Darling.
She said it casually, as though she had every right to use the word.
Julian shot her a warning glance.
Then he turned back to me.
"We have a small business meeting first. An investor flew in from Honolulu, and I can't afford to miss him.""
"On our honeymoon?""
He gave me the same irritated look he'd used at JFK.
"Clara, please. This deal is worth millions.""
"Then I hope it goes well.""
The answer seemed to surprise him.
He studied my face.
"You're not upset?""
I thought of my father's shares, the documents I'd signed, and the secretive conversation I'd overheard.
"I've decided to stop wasting energy on things I can't control.""
For a moment, something flickered in his eyes.
Then he smiled and kissed my forehead.
"That's my girl.""
Sienna watched us with an expression I couldn't quite read.
"Come on," she said.
"Our driver is waiting.""
I stepped back.
"Actually, I'll take a separate car. I want to check in and rest.""
Julian frowned.
"Why?""
"Because I spent eleven hours sitting alone while my husband worked with his secretary.""
His face reddened.
"We've been over this.""
"Then we shouldn't need to go over it again.""
Sienna made a small sound that might have been a laugh.
Julian's jaw tightened.
"Fine. Do whatever you want. We'll meet you at the resort.""
He handed me my suitcase.
I watched him and Sienna walk toward the exit, their shoulders nearly touching.
Then I called the number Margaret had sent me.
A man answered after one ring.
"Mrs. Whitmore?""
"Yes.""
"My name is Daniel Reyes. I'm the driver arranged by Ms. Hayes. I'm standing outside Door Six, holding a sign with your name.""
I found him beside a black SUV.
He was in his late fifties, with silver at his temples and the quiet, observant manner of someone who noticed everything without needing to comment on it.
He took my suitcase and opened the rear door.
"Ms. Hayes asked me to bring you directly to the hotel.""
"Do you know what's going on?""
He glanced toward the terminal.
"Not everything, ma'am. But I know your father.""
I stopped.
"You knew my father?""
"Worked security for Bennett Global for fifteen years. Your father helped my daughter pay for nursing school when she was young.""
His expression softened.
"He was a good man.""
I swallowed hard.
"Then you understand why I'm frightened.""
Daniel closed the trunk.
"Yes, ma'am. And I understand why you're going to be all right.""
I wanted to believe him.
During the drive, Maui unfolded beyond the window in layers of green hills, volcanic mountains, and blue ocean. Couples stood along the roadside taking pictures. Families carried beach bags toward the sand. The world looked offensively peaceful.
My phone buzzed.
Julian.
Where are you?
I typed, On my way to the resort.
His reply came immediately.
Good. Don't unpack anything important. We may have to leave early tomorrow.
I stared at the message.
Why?
Business. I'll explain when I see you.
Then another message arrived.
And Clara? Please don't bring up the seating arrangement again. Sienna feels terrible about it.
I laughed once, without humor.
Sienna felt terrible.
I wondered whether she felt terrible about the necklace, the first-class seat, or the plan to take my father's company.
Probably none of the above.
The SUV pulled into the resort driveway twenty minutes later.
The hotel was even more beautiful than I'd imagined when I booked it. White stone columns framed an open-air lobby. Tropical flowers filled enormous ceramic vases. Beyond the reception desk, the ocean glittered beneath the afternoon sun.
I had chosen the resort because my father used to bring me to Maui when I was a little girl.
He'd loved the island.
After my mother died, we'd spent a week here every summer, walking along the beach and eating breakfast on the balcony of a small rental house.
He'd always said the ocean reminded him that no storm lasted forever.
I hadn't returned since his death.
Now, standing in the lobby, I wished desperately that he were beside me.
A woman in a navy suit approached the reception desk.
"Mrs. Whitmore?""
I turned.
"Yes?""
"I'm Eleanor Price, the resort manager. We've been expecting you.""
Something in her tone made my stomach tighten.
"Is there a problem with our reservation?""
"Not at all, ma'am. Everything is exactly as your father arranged.""
My heart stopped.
"My father?""
Eleanor glanced at Daniel, who gave her a subtle nod.
Then she reached beneath the desk and produced a small black envelope.
My father's handwriting covered the front.
*For Clara. Only when the truth finally comes out.*
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
I knew that handwriting better than my own. The slightly slanted letters. The firm downward stroke of the C. The way he always pressed too hard when he wrote his name.
My fingers shook as I accepted the envelope.
"Who gave this to you?""
"Your father arranged for it to be held here. The instructions were very specific. It was to be delivered to you personally, and only after Ms. Hayes confirmed that the conditions had been met.""
I stared at her.
"What conditions?""
Eleanor's expression grew solemn.
"That you had married Julian Whitmore and traveled to Maui with him.""
A chill traveled down my spine.
My father had anticipated my marriage?
No.
That was impossible.
He'd died three years before Julian proposed.
"There's been some mistake," I whispered.
Daniel moved closer.
"Your father didn't leave many things to chance, Mrs. Whitmore.""
I broke the seal.
Inside was a single photograph and a folded note.
The photograph showed the entrance to my father's old office in New York. Julian stood beside the door, wearing a suit I recognized from one of the company's annual meetings.
Sienna stood beside him.
Between them was a third person.
My mother's younger brother, Richard Bennett.
My uncle.
The man who'd attended my father's funeral and held me while I cried. The man who'd told me I could call him any time I needed family. The man who'd insisted Julian was exactly the kind of husband my father would have wanted for me.
I turned the photograph over.
A date had been written on the back.
Four years earlier.
Two years before Julian had supposedly met Sienna.
My mouth went dry.
"Why would my uncle be with them?""
Eleanor said nothing.
I unfolded the note.
My darling Clara,
If you are reading this, someone has finally given you a reason to question the people closest to you. I pray I am wrong about what that means.
Do not assume the person who hurt you is the only person involved.
Trust the evidence. Not the explanations.
There is more to this photograph than you can see.
Ask Margaret for the blue ledger.
And whatever happens, remember this: you are not responsible for the choices other people make in your name.
All my love,
Dad.
I read the letter twice.
Then a third time.
The blue ledger.
I'd never heard of it.
My phone vibrated.
A message from Julian.
We're at the hotel. Where are you? And why is there a security officer waiting outside our suite?
I frowned.
What security officer?
Another message appeared.
Clara, answer me.
I hadn't replied when a third message came through.
CLARA. WHAT DID YOU DO?
I looked up at Eleanor.
"Someone is outside my suite?""
"Yes, ma'am.""
"Who?""
"Mr. Whitmore requested that a staff member be removed from the corridor. When we declined, he became upset.""
"Why would he want a staff member removed?""
Eleanor exchanged a glance with Daniel.
"Because the person stationed outside your suite isn't one of our staff members.""
My pulse quickened.
"Then who is it?""
Before she could answer, my phone rang.
Margaret.
I accepted the call immediately.
"Clara," she said.
"Have you received the envelope?""
"Yes. There's a photograph of Julian, Sienna, and my uncle. It was taken two years before Julian says he met her.""
"I expected you might find that.""
"You expected it?""
"Your father gave me a copy of the photograph three months before he died.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I didn't know what it meant at the time. Your father believed Richard was helping Julian access confidential company records. But he didn't have enough evidence to prove it.""
I looked down at the photograph again.
"Is my uncle involved in the takeover?""
"I believe so. But we need the ledger before we can establish the full arrangement.""
"What is the blue ledger?""
"A record your father kept outside the company's official accounting system. He used it to document sensitive transactions, private agreements, and payments that he suspected might eventually require explanation.""
"Where is it?""
"That is what we need to find out.""
I gripped the phone.
"Margaret, Julian said I signed documents that would transfer control of my shares.""
"I know.""
The words hit me like a slap.
"You know?""
"Your father anticipated that someone might try to obtain your signature while you were grieving, distracted, or emotionally vulnerable. He created a legal safeguard that may invalidate the transfer. But I need the original documents before I can confirm that.""
I sank into a chair near the lobby windows.
"Then why did you let me marry him?""
Her voice softened.
"I didn't know he would go this far. Neither did your father. We knew he was ambitious.
We suspected he was dishonest. We did not know he would use you.""
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
Outside, waves broke against the shore.
"I loved him," I whispered.
"I know, Clara.""
"I trusted him with everything.""
"That's why this hurts. But loving someone doesn't make you responsible for their betrayal.""
I closed my eyes.
Then I remembered my uncle's hand on my shoulder at the funeral. His voice telling me I was safe. His promise that family would always protect me.
"Margaret, what if Richard is the person waiting outside my suite?""
She went silent.
Then she said, "He isn't.""
"How do you know?""
"Because Richard is currently in New York, trying to convince the board that Julian has your full authorization to restructure the company.""
My eyes opened.
"He's doing what?""
"He's presenting the documents you signed as evidence that you voluntarily granted Julian control over your voting rights.""
I stood so abruptly that Eleanor took a step back.
"They're doing it now?""
"Yes. And if the board accepts his interpretation, Julian could gain control of the company before we have a chance to stop him.""
"Then what am I supposed to do?""
"Stay calm. Don't sign anything. Don't confront Julian without evidence.""
I looked toward the elevators.
"He's going to come looking for me.""
"Let him.""
Her voice became firm.
"Your father made one final arrangement before he died. The person waiting outside your suite is the only one who can explain why this photograph matters.""
"Who is it?""
"A man named Thomas Reed.""
I searched my memory.
The name meant nothing.
"He's a former investigator," Margaret continued.
"Your father hired him to look into Julian's activities. Thomas disappeared before he could complete the investigation.""
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"The investigator who disappeared?""
"Yes.""
"Why is he here now?""
"Because he wasn't dead, Clara. He was hiding.""
A chill passed through me.
"From whom?""
"From the same people who are trying to steal your father's company.""
Before I could ask another question, I heard raised voices from the elevator lobby.
Julian.
"She's my wife. I don't care what instructions you've been given. Move.""
A second voice answered calmly.
"Mr. Whitmore, you're welcome to speak with your wife when she chooses to see you.""
Julian's voice rose.
"I said move.""
I turned toward Eleanor.
She looked at me with quiet concern.
"Would you like us to escort you to a private room?""
I thought of the man I'd married.
The man who'd called me sweetheart while planning to strip me of everything my father had left me.
"No," I said.
May you like
For the first time since JFK, my voice didn't shake.
"Let him come.""
