Chapter 5

The next few weeks were a blur.

Lawyers. Documents. Calls back and forth.

James fought at first. Then he folded. Quickly.

The Thompsons’ business relied on banks and partners Vincent could crush with a single word. They knew they had no choice.

The divorce was finalized fast.

James signed everything. Transferred the assets. Walked away. Just like that.

I never saw him again. Not in person.

But word got back to us.

Sophia left him the moment the money stopped looking certain. His parents’ social standing crumbled. Friends disappeared. Doors closed.

He lost everything he’d ever cared about.

I didn’t feel joy. But I didn’t feel pity either.

One afternoon, Vincent found me in the garden.

“How are you holding up?” he asked.

“Better,” I admitted. “Lighter. Like a weight I’ve carried for years finally lifted.”

He smiled.

“That’s all I ever wanted for you. Peace.”

He sat beside me on the stone bench.

“Emily, there is something else you need to know,” he said, serious now. “The people who took you from us… they weren’t strangers. They worked for me. Someone I trusted.”

My breath caught.

“Who?”

“A man named Marcus Vane. He was my closest advisor. My right hand. He betrayed me. Sold you to that family to hurt me. To get back at me for something he imagined I’d done.”

“Why?” I asked.

“Jealousy. Greed. Madness. He told me later he wanted to see me suffer. And he succeeded. For twenty-three years, I thought I’d failed to protect you.”

Pain flashed across his face.

“Where is he now?” I asked.

“He disappeared the day you were taken. Vanished. I’ve hunted him ever since. And recently… I’ve found traces. He’s in Miami.”

My heart raced.

“He’s here?”

Vincent nodded.

“And I fear he knows you’ve been found. That’s why I’m telling you. We need to be careful.”

“Will he come for me?”

Vincent took my hand.

“I won’t let anything happen to you. Not again. But I need you to be prepared. He’s dangerous. And he’s held a grudge for twenty-three years.”

I looked out across the garden. The sun was warm. The air smelled of jasmine.

For the first time in my life, I felt safe.

But I understood.

May you like

Peace wasn’t something you found. It was something you fought for.

And I was ready to fight.
