Chapter 10

Months passed.
Spring turned into summer.
The foundation grew. We helped women escape abusive marriages. Helped them find work. Find confidence. Find their voices.
I poured everything I had into it.
James and his family faded into obscurity. Broke. Disgraced. Alone. Exactly how they’d treated me.
Sophia left him within weeks. He moved away. No one knew where. No one cared.
Vincent and I spent every day together. Building a relationship. Making up for lost time.
He taught me so much. About strength. About honor. About what it truly means to be family.
And I taught him something too. About forgiveness. About hope. About how to love without fear.
One beautiful sunny morning, he took me out to the garden.
Clara was there. Waiting. Smiling.
Vincent turned to me. His eyes bright with tears.
“Emily,” he said. “I have something to tell you. Something I’ve been waiting to say until you were truly ready.”
I looked at him.
“Whatever it is… you can tell me.”
He took both my hands in his.
“I am stepping back from my businesses. Retiring. Everything will be managed by people I trust. But the legacy… the name… the future… it belongs to you now.”
My breath caught.
“Me?”
“You are my daughter. My heir. And the best of everything I ever was.”
He reached into his pocket. Pulled out a small, velvet box.
Inside was a ring. A single diamond, brilliant and bright.
“Your mother wore this,” he said. “She wanted it to go to our daughter. To be given when you had found your worth. When you knew who you were.”
He slipped it onto my finger.
“It fits perfectly,” he said.
Tears streamed down my face.
“She would be so happy,” I whispered.
“She is happy,” Vincent said. “I know she is.”
He wrapped his arms around me. Held me close.
“I spent twenty-three years afraid I’d lost you forever,” he said. “Now I know. I didn’t lose you. I was just waiting. And you were finding your way back to me.”
I hugged him back. Tight.
“I’m home now, Father,” I said. “And I’m never leaving.”
We stood there together in the warm sunlight. Surrounded by flowers. By love. By peace.
I thought about that terrible anniversary night. The tears. The betrayal. The feeling of being utterly alone.
And then I looked at where I was. Who I was.
I was loved.
I was safe.
I was Gallo.
And I was finally, completely free.
Vincent stepped back. Wiped gently at my cheeks.
“Come on,” he said, smiling through his own tears. “Clara has prepared lunch. And I believe there’s your favorite cake.”
I laughed. Wiped my eyes.
“Then let’s go,” I said.
He offered his arm. I took it.
And together, we walked toward the house. Toward the future. Toward everything Elena had dreamed of.
May you like
Everything was as it should be.
And at long last… my heart was whole.
