Chapter 5: The Secret Beneath My Name
The message from Ethan stayed on my screen long after the apartment went dark.
*Nathan didn’t marry you to destroy your father’s empire.*
I read it again.
And again.
Each time, the words felt heavier.
Because a part of me had already accepted the worst.
I thought Nathan married me for money.
For connections.
For the power that came with the Whitmore name.
But Ethan’s message suggested something even more terrifying.
He hadn’t wanted my father’s empire.
He wanted something only I had.
Something I didn’t even know I possessed.
I looked at Nathan.
He was still staring at the television screen.
The news broadcast continued playing silently in the background.
His company logo.
His face.
His reputation being torn apart in real time.
But none of that seemed to matter.
Not anymore.
Because he was watching me.
Not like a husband.
Like someone afraid I was about to discover the final piece of a puzzle.
“What did you need from me?””
My voice was quiet.
But Nathan heard it.
His shoulders stiffened.
“Claire.””
“No.””
I stepped away from him.
“I’m done hearing my name from you like it means something.””
His face tightened.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
He looked toward the television.
Then back at me.
“I can’t.””
I almost smiled.
A sad, empty smile.
“Of course you can’t.””
I walked toward the door.
Nathan moved immediately.
“Where are you going?””
I looked at him.
“To meet Ethan.””
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
Too instantly.
I stopped.
“You’re afraid of him.””
“I know him.””
“You’re afraid of what he’ll tell me.””
His silence was enough.
I reached for the door handle.
“Claire.””
I turned.
“What?””
For a moment, I saw the man I thought I married.
The man who used to look at me like I was the only person in the room.
But that man disappeared quickly.
“I’m sorry.””
Two words.
The easiest words in the world.
The hardest words to believe.
I stared at him.
“You’re sorry I found out.””
His expression changed.
“No.””
“Then what are you sorry for?””
He didn’t answer.
And that was the answer.
I left.
Ethan chose an old restaurant on the edge of the city.
Not a luxury place.
Not somewhere Nathan would ever visit.
That alone told me something.
Nathan surrounded himself with polished glass, expensive furniture, and people who smiled because they needed something from him.
Ethan chose a place where nobody cared who walked through the door.
I sat at the corner table, my injured hand wrapped carefully in a bandage my father’s assistant had arranged for me.
My father had sent a private doctor within an hour of my leaving the penthouse.
He wanted me at a hospital.
I refused.
Not because I didn’t need help.
Because I needed answers first.
The restaurant door opened.
A man walked in wearing a dark jacket and carrying no phone, no briefcase, no obvious signs of wealth.
But I recognized him immediately.
Ethan Cross.
He looked nothing like Nathan.
Nathan was sharp edges.
Perfect hair.
Perfect suit.
A man who looked like he belonged on the cover of a magazine.
Ethan looked like someone who had spent years fighting battles nobody knew about.
He approached my table.
“Claire Whitmore.””
I didn’t stand.
“You know my name.””
He gave a small, bitter smile.
“I’ve known your name longer than Nathan has.””
My stomach tightened.
“Sit down.””
He did.
For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then Ethan looked at my hand.
His expression changed.
“He did that?””
I said nothing.
I didn’t need to.
His jaw tightened.
“I should have expected it.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means Nathan always becomes violent when he loses control.””
I stared at him.
“You knew?””
Ethan looked down.
“I knew he had a temper.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
The silence stretched.
Finally, he nodded.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“You knew what kind of man he was?””
“I knew what kind of man he was becoming.””
I leaned back.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
He looked genuinely ashamed.
“Because I thought I could stop him before it reached you.””
I laughed quietly.
“That worked well.””
“No.””
His voice was heavy.
“It didn’t.””
A waiter came by.
Neither of us ordered.
I wanted answers.
Nothing else.
“Start from the beginning.””
Ethan looked out the window.
“The beginning isn’t when you met Nathan.””
“Then when?””
“The day Nathan discovered your identity.””
I waited.
“He wasn’t searching for you at first.””
“Then what was he searching for?””
Ethan looked directly at me.
“Your father’s missing technology patent.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Twenty years ago, Alexander Whitmore developed a logistics prediction system.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know anything about that.””
“Because your father hid it.””
“Why?””
“Because people wanted it.””
His eyes hardened.
“People like Nathan.””
I felt a chill.
“Are you saying Nathan married me for a patent?””
“Not exactly.””
“Then what?””
Ethan leaned forward.
“The patent was never the important part.””
“What was?””
“You.””
I froze.
“What?””
“The system was protected through a biometric authorization.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
“It means the final access key wasn’t stored in a computer.””
Ethan lowered his voice.
“It was passed through your family.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“My father never told me.””
“Because he wanted to protect you.””
I looked away.
All my life, I thought my father’s secrets were about wealth.
About business.
About the world he came from.
I never imagined I was part of them.
“Why me?””
“Because you’re the last person with access.””
My heart pounded.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does if you understand Nathan.””
I looked at him.
“Explain.””
Ethan took a deep breath.
“When Nathan met you, he didn’t know about the system.””
I listened carefully.
“He only knew you were Alexander Whitmore’s daughter.””
“Then why marry me?””
“Because he believed being close to you would eventually give him access to everything your father protected.””
I felt sick.
“But he said he loved me.””
Ethan’s expression softened.
“That’s the complicated part.””
I hated that answer.
Because complicated meant there was still something human left.
And I didn’t want to feel anything for Nathan anymore.
“Did he love me?””
Ethan looked at me.
“I think he did.””
My heart hurt.
“But?””
“But Nathan has always believed love and ambition can exist together.””
I looked down.
“He thought he could love me and still use me.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than a lie.
Because it sounded exactly like Nathan.
Ethan continued.
“The problem is, once he discovered the access key wasn’t something you knew about, he couldn’t leave.””
“Why?””
“Because by then, you were his connection to the Whitmore family.””
I felt anger rise.
“So our entire marriage was a business plan.””
“No.””
Ethan shook his head.
“That’s what makes it worse.””
“What?””
“He actually fell in love with you.””
I looked away.
“Don’t defend him.””
“I’m not.””
His voice became serious.
“I’m telling you the truth.””
I didn’t answer.
Because the truth was becoming harder to understand.
If Nathan never loved me, I could hate him.
If he loved me, then he was something worse.
A person who could love me and still destroy me.
Ethan reached into his jacket.
He placed a small envelope on the table.
“What is that?””
“The reason I contacted you.””
I didn’t touch it.
“What’s inside?””
“A copy of Nathan’s original plan.””
My breath stopped.
“Original plan?””
“Yes.””
“The one he made before he met you.””
I looked at the envelope.
“What does it say?””
Ethan’s eyes met mine.
“It answers the question you’ve been asking.””
“What question?””
He spoke softly.
“Whether Nathan chose you…”
A pause.
“Or whether he chose the Whitmore name.””
I slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a single document.
At the top was a date.
Three days before I met Nathan.
Below it was a title.
*Operation Whitmore Access.*
And underneath…
Nathan Cross’s signature.
But as I read the first line, something caught my attention.
A handwritten note had been added at the bottom.
Not Nathan’s handwriting.
Someone else’s.
The words were only six.
*He never knew the final truth.*
I looked at Ethan.
“What truth?””
His face turned pale.
Before he could answer, my phone rang.
The screen showed my father’s number.
I answered immediately.
“Dad?””
His voice was urgent.
“Claire, where are you?””
I looked at Ethan.
“At a restaurant.””
“Leave now.””
My heart tightened.
“Why?””
A pause.
Then my father said something that made Ethan stand.
“Because someone just broke into my private archives.””
Silence.
“And they weren’t looking for my files.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What were they looking for?””
My father’s answer came quietly.
“They were looking for yours.””
I looked at the document in front of me.
The document that proved Nathan planned everything.
Then Ethan pointed toward the restaurant window.
A black car had stopped outside.
A man stepped out.
And even from a distance, I recognized him.
Nathan.
But he wasn’t alone.
Standing beside him was Vanessa.
And she was holding something in her hand.
Something that made Ethan whisper:
“Oh no.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
His face lost all color.
“That’s not Vanessa’s.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“Whose is it?””
Ethan stared at the object.
May you like
Then he said:
“Your father’s missing access key.””
