Chapter 9: The Truth Beneath the Lies
Nobody moved.
The entire apartment felt frozen in time.
My father stood beside me.
My mother stood behind the table.
Olivia held the folder against her chest.
And outside the door…
Richard Hale waited.
The man who had spent years smiling at family dinners.
The man who had shaken my hand at graduation.
The man who had always acted like he was the reasonable one.
Now he stood on the other side of a locked door.
And everyone inside was afraid of him.
I looked at my father.
“What do you mean?””
His eyes stayed on the door.
“Richard was never working for me.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“Then who was he working for?””
My father looked at me.
And for once…
he didn’t have an answer prepared.
He looked like a man who had finally run out of lies.
“Himself.””
A heavy silence followed.
Outside, Richard knocked again.
“Emma.””
His voice was calm.
Almost friendly.
“I know your father is filling your head with stories.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
Richard continued.
“Don’t make the same mistake your mother made.””
My mother stepped forward.
Her face changed.
“You don’t get to talk about me.””
Richard laughed quietly through the door.
“Still angry after all these years?””
My mother’s hands curled into fists.
“You destroyed my life.””
A pause.
Then Richard answered:
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“You destroyed your own life when you decided you were better than everyone else.””
The cruelty of the sentence shocked me.
My mother looked hurt.
Not because she believed him.
Because she remembered.
I looked at my father.
“What happened?””
He didn’t look at me.
“Twenty years ago, your mother and I started a business.””
I frowned.
“Twenty?””
He nodded.
“Before you were born.””
I listened carefully.
“Richard was our lawyer from the beginning.””
My father swallowed.
“He helped us create contracts. Handle taxes. Protect our company.””
“And then?””
“Then he learned something.””
“What?””
My father looked at Olivia.
“Your grandfather left money.””
I frowned.
“My grandfather?””
He nodded.
“Your mother’s father.””
My mother looked down.
“He was wealthy.””
I stared.
“Why didn’t I know this?””
“Because it wasn’t supposed to matter,” my mother said quietly.
My father continued.
“Your grandfather created a trust.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
Another secret.
Another hidden piece of my life.
“Who controlled it?””
My father looked away.
“Your mother.””
I understood immediately.
Richard wasn’t just involved with documents.
He had a reason.
A motive.
“He wanted access.””
My father nodded.
“Yes.””
My mother’s voice was bitter.
“Richard convinced your father that the trust money could save the business.””
“And you refused.””
She nodded.
“I refused because I knew something was wrong.””
My father closed his eyes.
“I didn’t listen.””
That confession surprised me.
Because my father rarely admitted mistakes.
Not real ones.
“I thought Richard was helping us.””
He looked at me.
“I was wrong.””
The room was silent.
Then Olivia spoke.
“My father knew about the trust.””
Everyone looked at her.
She continued:
“He spent years trying to get control of it.””
“How?””
She opened the folder.
“Through legal manipulation.””
My eyes moved over the documents.
“Wait.””
I pointed.
“These are from five years ago.””
Olivia nodded.
“Yes.””
“But the trust existed before that.””
“Yes.””
“So why create the agreement about my money?””
My father looked at the floor.
“Because Richard convinced me.””
My anger rose.
“You’re blaming him?””
“No.””
My father looked at me.
“I’m admitting I let him use me.””
That answer stopped me.
He continued.
“Richard told me your mother was hiding assets from me.””
My mother looked furious.
“I wasn’t.””
“I know that now.””
My father’s voice broke slightly.
“But back then, I believed him.””
“And the custody case?””
My father went quiet.
My mother answered.
“Richard wanted access to the trust.””
I looked confused.
“How did keeping me with your father help him?””
My mother looked at me.
“Because if your father controlled the family finances…”
She stopped.
I finished the sentence.
“He could control the trust.””
Everyone went silent.
Exactly.
I felt sick.
The custody battle wasn’t about me.
Not completely.
It was about money.
About control.
About a fortune I never even knew existed.
My entire childhood had been used as a battlefield.
Richard’s voice interrupted from outside.
“You’re all making this more dramatic than it was.””
Everyone froze.
He had been listening.
My father stepped toward the door.
“You always did like pretending you were innocent.””
Richard laughed.
“Coming from you?””
The door handle moved.
But it didn’t open.
My father had locked it.
Richard sighed.
“Your father is finally telling the truth?””
My father said nothing.
Richard continued.
“Interesting.””
I looked at Olivia.
She was recording everything on her phone.
Good.
Because now we needed proof.
Richard spoke again.
“Emma, you need to understand something.””
I stared at the door.
“What?””
“Your father didn’t steal your savings because I told him to.””
My father looked down.
Richard continued.
“He did it because he was desperate.””
I looked at my father.
A painful truth.
Even if Richard was evil…
my father had still made his choices.
Richard lowered his voice.
“And your mother?””
My mother stepped closer.
“What about me?””
“You know exactly what you did.””
My mother’s face changed.
I looked between them.
“What is he talking about?””
Nobody answered.
My mother looked at the floor.
“Mom?””
She closed her eyes.
“There’s something else.””
My heart sank.
Of course there was.
There was always something else.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“The night I left…”
She struggled.
“The night everyone thought I abandoned you…”
A tear slipped down her face.
“I found out Richard wasn’t just stealing from the business.””
I waited.
“He was stealing from your grandfather’s trust.””
I frowned.
“But how?””
“He forged documents.””
My mother looked at the door.
“And I found proof.””
My father’s face changed.
“What?””
She nodded.
“That’s why Richard wanted me gone.””
The apartment went silent.
My father looked at her.
“You never told me.””
“Because I didn’t know who to trust.””
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
She had been surrounded by people protecting themselves.
Not her.
Not me.
Themselves.
Richard suddenly spoke.
“You’re still lying.””
My mother looked at the door.
“You know I’m not.””
Richard’s voice became sharper.
“Emma, ask your mother why she didn’t take the evidence to the police.””
I looked at my mother.
She looked away.
And that small movement terrified me.
“Mom?””
She whispered:
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Richard?””
“No.””
She looked at my father.
“Of what would happen to your father.””
I froze.
“What?””
My mother’s eyes filled.
“Because by then, your father was already involved.””
My father closed his eyes.
The silence answered everything.
I stepped back.
“You knew.””
My father looked at me.
“I knew something was wrong.””
“But you stayed.””
“I thought I could fix it.””
“You always say that.””
My voice broke.
“You always say you were protecting everyone.””
My father whispered:
“I was trying.””
“But you weren’t.””
I shook my head.
“You were protecting yourself.””
He didn’t argue.
Because he knew.
Then Olivia suddenly looked at the folder.
Her face changed.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
She pulled out a small envelope hidden between the documents.
“This wasn’t here before.””
My mother frowned.
“What is it?””
Olivia opened it carefully.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Not from Richard.
Not from my father.
From Judge Whitmore.
She read the first line.
Then stopped.
Her face went pale.
“What?””
I asked.
She looked at me.
“This is dated the day before the custody hearing.””
She handed me the paper.
I read.
My hands started shaking.
The note was short.
Only a few sentences.
But one sentence destroyed everything.
*Richard Hale instructed me to rule in favor of Thomas Carter, or he would expose my involvement in the financial scheme.*
I looked up.
Nobody spoke.
Because finally…
we understood.
Richard wasn’t the helper.
He wasn’t the lawyer.
He wasn’t the man behind my father.
He was the man controlling everyone.
My father had been a weapon.
My mother had been a threat.
The judge had been a hostage.
And Richard…
Richard had been the person holding the strings.
Then the lights suddenly went out.
The apartment went completely dark.
Someone screamed.
A second later, glass shattered.
The window behind us broke.
Everyone dropped.
I felt a hand grab my arm.
I didn’t know whose.
Then I heard Richard’s voice from inside the apartment.
Not outside.
Inside.
“Thank you for gathering everything for me.””
My blood froze.
The emergency lights flickered on.
And standing near the broken window…
was Richard Hale.
Holding the original agreement.
The evidence folder was gone.
He smiled.
“Now nobody has to keep secrets anymore.””
I stared at him.
“How did you get in?””
Richard looked at my father.
Then smiled.
“Because your father never changed the locks.””
My father’s face went pale.
Richard looked at me.
“You spent your whole life looking for the person who ruined your family.””
He stepped closer.
“But you never asked the most important question.””
My voice shook.
“What question?””
His smile disappeared.
“Who created your father’s desperation in the first place?””
The room went silent.
Richard lifted the document.
And whispered:
“Because Emma…”
“You were never the victim of this story.””
I froze.
“What?””
He looked at my mother.
Then my father.
May you like
Then back at me.
“You were the reason it all started.””
