Chapter 9: The Wedding Nobody Expected
We found Clara in the parking garage beneath her building.
She was sitting in her car with the doors locked, shaking so badly she could barely hold the phone.
When she saw me, she burst into tears.
“I’m sorry.””
I opened the passenger door.
“Get out.””
“I didn't know.””
“I know.””
“I swear, Sophia, I didn't know.””
“I believe you.””
She looked at Elise.
Then froze.
“Who is that?””
Elise looked at her.
“Your sister-in-law.””
Clara stared.
“What?””
I said quietly, “This is Elise.””
Clara's mouth opened.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“But she…”
“It's complicated.””
Clara looked at me.
“Everything is complicated with this family.””
Despite everything, I almost laughed.
Then she handed me her phone.
“I found these.””
There were messages between Bradley and someone saved only as *E.H.*
The messages were explicit.
*Does Sophia have the trust documents?*
*Not yet.*
*Keep her close.*
*What about the restaurant?*
*It's collateral.*
I felt cold.
Another message.
*The wedding is the easiest way to force the transfer.*
I looked at Clara.
“When is the wedding?””
“Tomorrow.””
I stared.
“Tomorrow?””
She nodded.
“Bradley moved it up.””
“Why?””
“He said he wanted a small ceremony.””
I looked at Elise.
Daniel understood first.
“He wants the trust activated before anyone can intervene.””
“But it's already active.””
“Not completely.””
Daniel opened the documents.
“The controlling interest in Bennett Holdings transfers after the trustee confirms the five-year condition.””
“And?””
“Someone has to sign the final acceptance.””
“Me.””
“Yes.””
I understood.
“They want me at the wedding.””
Clara shook her head.
“They want you there because Bradley plans to make you sign something.””
“What?””
“We don't know.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“We do.””
He handed me a copy.
A transfer agreement.
It would have given Clara's future husband control over my restaurant's operating company.
I stared at it.
“He wants Ellen.””
“He wants the building,” Thomas said.
“And Bennett Holdings.””
“And the trust.””
I looked at Clara.
“How did you find this?””
She swallowed.
“I went through his laptop.””
“Does he know?””
“No.””
“Then we're ahead.””
Thomas shook his head.
“Not for long.””
My phone rang.
Evelyn.
I answered.
“You're very difficult to frighten.””
I said nothing.
She continued.
“Your grandfather was always impressed by that.””
“Where is he?””
She laughed.
“You're asking the wrong question.””
“What's the right one?””
“Why did he choose you?””
I tightened my grip.
“Because he trusted me.””
“No.””
Her voice became cold.
“Because he knew you were the only one stupid enough to keep fighting.””
I smiled.
“Then you should be worried.””
A pause.
“Why?””
“Because I'm exactly like him.””
I ended the call.
Clara stared at me.
“What are you going to do?””
I looked at her.
“Get married.””
She blinked.
“What?””
“Not me.””
I looked at the wedding invitation.
“Tomorrow, you marry Bradley.””
Clara's face drained.
“Are you insane?””
“No.””
I looked at Elise.
“We're going to let them believe they have everything.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“And then?””
“Then we close the trap.””
The next afternoon, the wedding took place at a private estate outside Manhattan.
Clara walked down the aisle.
Bradley waited beneath a white arch.
He looked confident.
Too confident.
I sat in the front row beside my mother.
Dad was on my other side.
Elise sat behind us.
Nobody in the room knew who she was.
Not yet.
Bradley smiled when he saw me.
I smiled back.
During the vows, his eyes never left mine.
That told me everything.
He knew.
After the ceremony, we moved into the reception hall.
Champagne flowed.
Music played.
People laughed.
Bradley approached me.
“Sophia.””
“Bradley.””
“I’m glad you came.””
“Of course.””
He leaned closer.
“You know, I owe you an apology.””
“For what?””
“For what happened at dinner.””
“You don't.””
“I judged you.””
I smiled.
“Yes, you did.””
He laughed.
“I was wrong.””
“About what?””
“About your restaurant.””
I tilted my head.
“You liked it?””
“I loved it.””
“Funny.””
“What?””
“You didn't say that at dinner.””
He smiled.
“I didn't know it was yours.””
“And now?””
“Now I understand.””
His hand tightened around his glass.
“You built something valuable.””
I looked directly into his eyes.
“Yes.””
He lowered his voice.
“You should consider protecting it.””
“I do.””
“Against people who might want to take it.””
“Like you?””
His smile disappeared for half a second.
Then returned.
“I don't know what you mean.””
“Of course you don't.””
He stepped away.
Ten minutes later, Daniel approached me.
“The trustee is ready.””
I nodded.
We moved into a private room.
Bradley followed.
Clara followed him.
Dad came behind us.
Elise remained outside.
The transfer documents were placed on the table.
Bradley smiled.
“This should be straightforward.””
I picked up the pen.
He watched.
I signed the first page.
Then the second.
Then the third.
Bradley relaxed.
He didn't notice Daniel's smile.
I placed the pen down.
“Done.””
Bradley reached for the documents.
Then froze.
“This isn't the agreement.””
“No.””
He looked at Daniel.
“What is this?””
Daniel calmly turned the document around.
“You signed the wrong one.””
Bradley's face changed.
I looked at him.
“You thought I would sign over Ellen.””
He stood.
“What did you do?””
“I changed the beneficiary structure.””
His eyes narrowed.
“How?””
“Five years ago, my grandfather added a provision.””
Daniel smiled.
“If anyone attempts to force or fraudulently obtain control of the trust, the assets automatically transfer to the secondary beneficiary.””
Bradley looked toward the door.
“Who?””
The door opened.
Elise walked in.
Bradley's face went white.
“No.””
Elise smiled.
“Hello, Bradley.””
He stumbled backward.
“How are you alive?””
Clara stared at him.
“You knew?””
He said nothing.
She slapped him.
The sound echoed through the room.
“You knew she was alive?””
He looked at her.
“Clara…”
“Don't.””
She stepped back.
“You used me.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“You lied to me.””
“I love you.””
“You don't even know what love is.””
Bradley turned toward me.
“This isn't over.””
I smiled.
“It is.””
“No.””
He pointed at Dad.
“Ask him.””
I frowned.
“Ask him what?””
Bradley laughed.
“Ask your father who actually ordered the fire.””
Dad went rigid.
Clara looked at him.
“What is he talking about?””
Bradley backed toward the door.
“You think Evelyn did everything?””
He smiled.
“She didn't.””
I looked at Dad.
“Dad?””
His face collapsed.
Bradley said one final sentence before security entered.
“Your father wasn't protecting you from Evelyn.””
May you like
He looked at me.
“He was protecting you from himself.””
