Chapter 6

The trust documents were not about Ryan.
They were about Liam.
That was what made Eleanor dangerous.
Claire dug for twelve hours and found the first thread.
Ryan’s grandfather had created a family trust decades ago.
A cold, complicated thing built for heirs and control.
If Ryan had a biological child before thirty-five, a large portion of the Blakewell estate would move into a protected branch under Ryan’s line.
But only if the child was legally recognized.
Only if paternity was established.
Only if no one could claim the mother had concealed the child in bad faith.
I stared at Claire across her desk.
“So Tiffany didn’t just want Ryan.”
“No,” Claire said.
“She wanted to make sure no child of yours could shift the trust away from her future children.”
Maya muttered, “That is insane.”
Claire looked at her.
“It is wealthy family logic. Which is often just insanity with paperwork.”
Ryan sat beside me, silent and pale.
I did not want him there.
But Claire insisted.
“If he’s willing to cooperate, we use that.”
Ryan rubbed his hands together.
“My mother knew.”
“Likely.”
“She told me Sarah was unstable after the breakup.”
I looked at him.
“And you believed her.”
His face crumpled.
“Yes.”
The honesty did not heal me.
But it stopped him from hiding.
That afternoon, Ryan confronted Eleanor in Claire’s office.
She arrived angry.
Then she saw me.
Then she saw Liam.
Her face softened for half a second before control returned.
“This is inappropriate,” she said.
Ryan stood.
“Did you help Tiffany block Sarah?”
Eleanor removed her gloves slowly.
“Do not speak to me like a criminal.”
“Answer me.”
“I protected you.”
My stomach turned.
Ryan’s voice cracked.
“From my son?”
“From a trap.”
I stood, Liam asleep against my shoulder.
“He is not a trap.”
Eleanor looked at him.
Then at me.
For the first time, her certainty faltered.
“I did not know she was pregnant.”
“But you made sure I could not tell him.”
She had no answer.
Ryan took a step back like his mother had struck him.
“You helped destroy my life.”
Eleanor’s eyes flashed.
“No. I tried to save it.”
“By handing me to Tiffany?”
“She was appropriate.”
“She lied.”
“She had ambition.”
“She forged my name.”
“She came from our world!”
The room went quiet.
There it was.
The truth beneath everything.
Eleanor looked at me with contempt she no longer bothered hiding.
“You were never going to fit.”
I smiled sadly.
“You’re right.”
Her chin lifted.
“I know.”
“I was never going to fit inside a family that thinks love is a balance sheet.”
Her face tightened.
Claire slid a document across the table.
“Mrs. Blakewell, this is a preservation notice. Your devices, emails, trust communications, and financial records are now relevant to pending litigation.”
Eleanor’s eyes widened.
“You cannot do that.”
“We already did.”
Ryan turned to his mother.
“I’m establishing paternity today.”
“No.”
The word left Eleanor before she could stop it.
Ryan stared.
She reached for him.
“Ryan, think. Once he is legally yours, everything changes.”
He pulled away.
“He is mine. That is why everything changes.”
By evening, the paternity test was done.
Two days later, the result arrived.
99.9999%.
Liam was Ryan’s son.
I expected Ryan to look relieved.
Instead, he looked devastated.
Because proof did not give him back the first hour.
Or the pregnancy.
Or the night he called me to watch me bleed emotionally for his friends.
He held the paper in both hands.
“I’m his father,” he whispered.
I looked at Liam sleeping peacefully.
“No,” I said.
“You are his biological father. Being his dad is something you still have to earn.”
Ryan nodded.
“I know.”
Then Claire’s assistant rushed in.
Her face was tense.
“Tiffany just filed an emergency petition.”
My heart dropped.
Claire took the paper.
Her jaw hardened.
“She’s claiming Sarah committed paternity fraud.”
Ryan stood so fast his chair hit the wall.
“She is not even my wife.”
May you like
Claire looked at him.
“She’s claiming she is.”
