Chapter 5

I did not want to feel anything for Ryan.
Not pity.
Not confusion.
Not the old ache.
But when Claire showed me the evidence, my anger shifted shape.
Ryan had abandoned me.
That was still true.
He had called me from his wedding to hurt me.
That was true too.
But Tiffany had engineered the silence.
And Eleanor had protected it.
Two days later, Ryan requested a supervised visit.
Claire advised me to allow one.
“Judges like reasonable parents,” she said.
“I don’t care what judges like.”
“You care about keeping Liam safe.”
So I agreed.
One hour.
At Claire’s office.
With cameras.
With a social worker.
With Maya in the next room and Dad in the parking lot pretending he was not staring through the window.
Ryan arrived ten minutes early.
No tux.
No arrogance.
Just dark circles and a face that looked like it had aged years in days.
When he saw Liam, he stopped walking.
Our son was asleep in my arms.
Ryan’s mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
The social worker said, “You may sit.”
Ryan sat across from me.
His hands shook.
“He’s real,” he whispered.
I almost hated him for that.
“Yes.”
Liam opened his eyes.
Blue.
Ryan’s blue.
Ryan covered his mouth.
“Oh God.”
I held Liam tighter.
“Don’t make this about you.”
He nodded quickly.
“I’m sorry.”
The words landed flat.
Too small.
Too late.
“For what?” I asked.
He looked at me.
“For calling you from the wedding.”
“And?”
“For leaving.”
“And?”
His eyes filled.
“For believing it was easy to replace you.”
That one hurt.
Because it sounded true.
I looked away.
Ryan leaned forward.
“Sarah, I didn’t block you.”
“I know.”
He froze.
“You know?”
“My lawyer found evidence.”
He closed his eyes.
“Tiffany.”
“And probably your mother.”
His eyes opened fast.
“My mother wouldn’t—”
“She called Liam a Blakewell child before she called him my son.”
Ryan looked down.
Shame moved across his face.
The social worker cleared her throat.
“Mr. Blakewell, would you like to hold the baby?”
Ryan looked at me.
He did not reach.
He asked.
“May I?”
That mattered.
Not enough to fix anything.
But enough for the moment.
I placed Liam in his arms carefully.
Ryan held him like he was afraid breathing too hard would break him.
Liam yawned.
Ryan cried.
Quietly.
No performance.
No audience.
Just tears falling onto his own sleeve.
“I missed everything,” he whispered.
I wanted to say yes, you did.
Instead, I said nothing.
Because the punishment was already in his arms.
After the visit, Ryan asked to speak alone.
Claire said no.
I agreed.
With the door open.
With Maya watching.
Ryan stood in the hallway.
“Tiffany’s family is threatening to sue me if I walk away.”
“You married her?”
“We said vows. The license was never filed.”
“Convenient.”
“I know how it sounds.”
“It sounds like you want sympathy.”
“No.” He swallowed.
“I want to testify.”
I stared at him.
“Against Tiffany?”
“And my mother if she helped.”
I searched his face.
“Why?”
He looked through the glass wall at Liam.
“Because he should not start life inside their lies.”
For the first time, I saw the man I had loved.
Not fully.
Not safely.
But faintly.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face went pale.
“Tiffany.”
“Answer it,” Claire said from behind me.
Ryan put it on speaker.
Tiffany’s voice was sharp.
“If you are with that woman, remember what happens if your father sees the trust documents.”
Ryan went still.
“What trust documents?”
Tiffany laughed.
May you like
“Ask your mother.”
Then she hung up.
