Chapter 7

Victoria came to the estate gates two days later.
She wore sunglasses and a white dress.
Like a widow at a press conference.
Security refused her entry.
She screamed into the intercom.
“David, open this gate!”
Leo heard her voice from the playroom.
He froze.
His toy fell from his hand.
I picked him up immediately.
David came from his office.
His face changed when he saw Leo shaking.
He took the intercom.
“You are not allowed here.”
“This is my home.”
“No. This is Leo’s home.”
“You’re choosing that maid over your wife?”
David looked at me.
Then at his son.
“I’m choosing the child you hurt.”
Victoria’s voice turned sharp.
“You’ll lose everything.”
“No,” he said.
“I almost did.”
He hung up.
She stayed at the gate for forty minutes.
Then police arrived and escorted her away for violating the protective order.
That night, David held a staff meeting.
The whole household gathered in the kitchen.
Cook.
Driver.
Gardeners.
Housekeepers.
Martin.
Me.
David stood at the head of the table.
“I failed this house,” he said.
Everyone went still.
“I allowed fear of Victoria to decide what people could say. That ends now. No one here will be punished for telling the truth. Anyone threatened by her will have legal support paid by me.”
Martin wiped his eyes.
The cook whispered, “Thank you, sir.”
David looked at me last.
“Maria protected my son when I didn’t.”
I looked down.
He continued, “That does not make her responsible for saving him forever. It makes me responsible for making sure she never has to stand between him and violence again.”
My throat tightened.
For six months, I had been treated like invisible furniture.
Now my name filled the room with weight.
Later, Leo asked for Elena’s photo album.
David opened it with trembling hands.
Leo touched his mother’s picture.
“Mommy nice.”
“Yes,” David whispered.
“Mommy love Leo.”
“More than anything.”
Leo looked at me.
“Ria love Leo?”
I smiled.
“Yes.”
Then he looked at David.
“Daddy stay?”
David pulled him close.
“Yes, buddy.”
Leo studied his face.
“Promise?”
May you like
David broke.
“I promise.”
