Chapter 17

David proposed three years after the golf club.
Not with a crowd.
Not with cameras.
Not with a diamond meant to impress anyone else.
He asked in Elena’s garden, after Leo had fallen asleep inside with his grandparents watching him.
“I love you,” he said.
“I love who you are when no one is watching. I love how you tell the truth even when your voice shakes. I love that you never let me hide from mine.”
My eyes filled.
He opened a small box.
The ring was simple.
A thin gold band with one small stone.
“I am not asking you to become Leo’s mother. He had one. I am not asking you to save us. You already helped us save ourselves. I am asking if you want to build a life with me, as yourself, with every door open.”
I cried then.
“David.”
“If the answer is no, I will still respect you.”

I believed him.
That was why I could say yes.
