Chapter 8

Margaret was charged with Elena’s death one week later.

Second-degree murder.

Medical tampering.

Child endangerment.

Assault.

False reporting.

For the first time, the Whitmore name could not buy quiet.

Daniel sold the mansion.

People called him dramatic.

I called it necessary.

“Too many ghosts,” he said.

“No,” I told him. “Too many locked doors.”

He moved into a smaller house near Leo’s preschool.

Still beautiful.

Still expensive.

But human.

No portrait hall.

No echoing marble corridors.

No closet large enough to terrify a child.

Leo chose a yellow bedroom.

He placed Elena’s photo on the dresser.

Then he placed a photo of me beside it.

Daniel looked at me.

“Is that okay?”

I knelt beside Leo.

“Who is that?”

He pointed.

“Mommy.”

Then he pointed at me.

“Rara.”

My throat tightened.

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“Both stay.”

Daniel cried quietly in the doorway.

I let him.

The trial began in spring.

I wore Elena’s blue scarf.

Margaret saw it and went pale.

Good.

Let her remember who she tried to erase.

The prosecutor played the hallway footage first.

The slap.

Leo’s wrist.

My hand striking back.

Then Elena’s recordings.

The courtroom heard my sister’s voice.

“If something happens to me, Margaret did it.”

A juror began to cry.

I did not.

I sat straight.

May you like

Elena had spent her final months not being believed.

I would not look away now.
