Chapter 1

The first time Leo called me “Mommy,” I pretended not to hear it.

Not because I wanted to reject him.

Because the word hurt too much.

He was three years old, small enough to still trip over his own feet, but old enough to understand absence.

His real mother, Elena, had been dead for one year.

My little sister.

My other half.

The girl who used to steal my sweaters, sleep in my bed during storms, and swear she would never marry into a family that looked down on people like us.

Then she met Daniel Whitmore.

And everything changed.

I came into the Whitmore house as a nanny because they would never have opened the door for me as Elena’s sister.

Not after the funeral they kept me away from.

Not after Margaret Whitmore told every guest that Elena had “no real family worth mentioning.”

So I used my mother’s maiden name.

Clara Bennett.

Quiet.

Polite.

Invisible.

And for six months, I watched over Leo.

I fed him.

Bathed him.

Held him when he woke crying for a mother he barely remembered.

He followed me everywhere.

Tiny hand in mine.

Tiny voice calling, “Rara,” because Clara was too hard.

Then that afternoon, he ran down the marble hallway toward me, smiling like sunshine had found its way inside that cold house.

“Mommy, pick me up!”

My heart stopped.

Before I could speak, Margaret stepped out from the sitting room.

Her face twisted.

Her hand flew.

The slap cracked across my cheek so hard I tasted blood.

Leo froze.

Then screamed.

“He is not your son!” Margaret shrieked. “You are hired help. How dare you let him call you that?”

She grabbed Leo’s wrist.

Hard.

“Say nanny. Say it now.”

Leo cried, “It hurts!”

Something in me broke.

I slapped her back.

She stumbled, shocked.

I pulled Leo into my arms.

That was when Daniel walked in with his lawyer.

Margaret pointed at me.

“Fire her!”

The lawyer opened a thick envelope.

“Not yet,” he said.

Then he held up a photograph.

Two little girls stood side by side.

Elena and me.

Almost identical.

Daniel went pale.

May you like

The lawyer’s voice cut through the room.

“She is not just the nanny. She is Elena’s older sister. Leo called his aunt Mommy because she looks exactly like the mother he lost.”
