Chapter 9: The Betrayal Inside My Own Family

I watched the video one more time.

Not because I wanted to.

Because I needed to be certain.

The person sitting across from Brenda wasn’t a stranger.

The voice wasn’t someone I didn’t know.

It was my brother.

James.

The same man who had held my shoulder after my wife died.

The same man who told me I was doing a good job raising my daughters.

The same man who had brought birthday gifts to Nia and Ava every year.

He had been sitting in my office.

Talking about taking my children away.

For several seconds, I couldn’t move.

I just stared at the screen.

Robert slowly closed the laptop.

“Daniel.””

I didn’t answer.

“Daniel, look at me.””

I looked up.

“How long?””

He knew what I meant.

“How long has my own brother been planning this?””

Robert didn’t respond.

Because he didn’t know.

And because there was no answer that would make it hurt less.

Evelyn sat quietly across from us.

Finally, she spoke.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“You knew.””

Her face fell.

“I suspected.””

“That’s not the same thing.””

“No.””

She lowered her eyes.

“It isn’t.””

I stood up.

“Everyone knew something was happening.””

“Daniel—”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“My daughters were scared. My wife was manipulating them. My brother was helping. And everyone kept pieces of the truth from me.””

Nobody spoke.

Because nobody could argue with that.

I grabbed the laptop.

“I need to talk to James.””

Robert immediately stood.

“No.””

“I need answers.””

“You need evidence.””

I looked at him.

“I already have evidence.””

“You have enough evidence to protect yourself.””

I stared at the screen.

“But not enough to understand why.””

That was the part I couldn’t let go of.

Why?

Why would James do this?

Why would anyone look at my daughters and see an opportunity?

Later that evening, I called James.

I didn’t tell him what I knew.

I didn’t mention the video.

I just asked him to meet me.

He agreed too quickly.

That worried me.

We met at a quiet coffee shop near his office.

When he walked in, he looked exactly the same.

Same jacket.

Same tired expression.

Same smile.

And somehow that made it worse.

Because monsters in stories look dangerous.

Real betrayal usually wears a familiar face.

He sat down.

“Daniel.””

I looked at him.

“Thanks for coming.””

He nodded.

“You sounded serious.””

“I am.””

The waitress came.

Neither of us ordered.

I placed my phone on the table.

The screen was dark.

Recording.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I needed the truth.

James looked uncomfortable.

“What’s going on?””

I stared at him.

“How long have you been helping Brenda?””

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

The hesitation.

The calculation.

“What are you talking about?””

I almost smiled.

Because that was the first thing everyone said when they were caught.

“What am I talking about?””

“Yes.””

I leaned forward.

“I found the documents.””

He went quiet.

“What documents?””

“The custody plan.””

His expression changed completely.

Not shock.

Fear.

“You shouldn’t have those.””

The words came out before he could stop them.

I felt something break inside me.

“You just admitted you know what I’m talking about.””

He looked away.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

My voice was low.

“You don’t get to explain this away.””

He rubbed his face.

“I was trying to help.””

“Help who?””

“You.””

I stared at him.

“By taking my children?””

“No.””

“By making me look like an unfit father?””

“That wasn’t supposed to happen.””

I laughed quietly.

“Wasn’t supposed to happen?””

He looked frustrated.

“You don’t understand the situation.””

“Then explain.””

He stayed silent.

I waited.

Finally, he whispered,

“Brenda came to me because she was desperate.””

“So?””

“She said you were destroying yourself.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She said you were drowning. Work. The girls. The guilt.””

I felt anger rising.

“And you believed her.””

“She showed me things.””

“What things?””

“Messages. Arguments. Videos.””

“Edited videos.””

He looked down.

“I didn’t know.””

“You didn’t know?””

“No.””

I leaned closer.

“You’re telling me you saw my daughter crying and your first thought was that she needed to be taken away?””

James swallowed.

“No.””

“Then what?””

“I thought you needed help.””

I stared at him.

“Help?””

He looked at me.

“I thought maybe the girls needed more stability.””

There it was.

The same lie.

The same idea.

My daughters were the problem.

I stood up.

“No.””

“Daniel—”

“No.””

People were watching.

I didn’t care.

“You don’t get to call it help when you’re destroying someone’s life.””

He lowered his voice.

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake is forgetting a birthday.””

I pointed at him.

“This was a plan.””

His face changed.

And that was when I knew.

There was still something he wasn’t saying.

“What else?””

He looked confused.

“What?””

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Silence.

Then he said,

“Daniel, let it go.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“Because you can’t fix everything.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He looked at me.

“You don’t know what Brenda promised.””

I froze.

“What?””

He immediately looked away.

Too late.

“What did she promise you?””

“Nothing.””

“James.””

He said nothing.

I leaned closer.

“Was it money?””

No response.

“Was it the house?””

His eyes moved.

A tiny movement.

But enough.

I sat back.

“Unbelievable.””

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then what was it like?””

He rubbed his hands together.

“I’m in debt.””

The confession surprised me.

“What?””

“I made bad choices.””

“How bad?””

He looked ashamed.

“Very bad.””

“And Brenda knew.””

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“So she used you.””

He nodded slowly.

“I thought I was helping her.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“She was using your desperation.””

He didn’t argue.

Because he knew.

I left the coffee shop with one final piece of information.

James wasn’t the mastermind.

He was another person Brenda controlled.

But that didn’t make him innocent.

When I got back to Michael’s house, Robert was waiting.

“We need to move quickly.””

“Why?””

He showed me his phone.

A news alert.

A local story.

I read the headline.

*Father Under Investigation After Allegations of Child Neglect.*

My blood ran cold.

“How did this get out?””

Robert looked serious.

“Someone leaked it.””

“Brenda.””

“Probably.””

I scrolled.

The article mentioned anonymous sources.

Claims that I was absent.

Claims that my children were struggling.

Claims that my household was unstable.

Every sentence sounded familiar.

Because it was Brenda’s story.

But then I noticed something.

A quote.

From an unnamed family member.

“He cares about his children, but sometimes love isn’t enough.””

My eyes narrowed.

I knew that sentence.

James had said something similar.

“They’re using him.””

Robert nodded.

“Yes.””

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice spoke.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes.””

“This is Detective Harris.””

My body tensed.

“Okay.””

“We need you to come in tomorrow morning.””

“Why?””

“There are new allegations.””

“What allegations?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your daughter Nia has claimed she was afraid of you.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She also said you frequently left her alone.””

“That’s not true.””

“I’m not making a judgment.””

The detective sounded professional.

“But you need to understand the seriousness of this.””

I looked at the girls upstairs.

My daughters.

The reason I was fighting.

“When?””

“Tomorrow at nine.””

The call ended.

I stood there silently.

Because Brenda had found the one thing that could hurt me more than losing my home.

My reputation.

My freedom.

My relationship with my daughters.

Then Nia appeared at the top of the stairs.

“Dad?””

I quickly turned off my phone.

“What’s wrong?””

She looked at me.

“I heard you talking.””

I walked toward her.

“It’s okay.””

“No.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“She’s going to make everyone think we’re bad.””

I knelt down.

“No one is going to take you away.””

“But what if they do?””

I held her hands.

“Listen to me.””

She looked at me.

“I know the truth.””

She nodded.

Then whispered,

“Dad…”

“What?””

“There’s something I never told you.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

She took a shaky breath.

“The night Brenda recorded me…”

I waited.

“She wasn’t alone.””

I froze.

“What do you mean?””

Nia looked toward the window.

“Someone else was there.””

“Who?””

Her voice became barely audible.

“The person holding the camera wasn’t Brenda.””

I felt cold.

“Who was it?””

She looked at me.

And said the one name I never expected.

“Mom’s brother.””

I stared at her.

“My wife’s brother?””

She nodded.

“I heard him talking to Brenda.””

My mind raced.

Another person.

Another betrayal.

Another secret.

Then Nia said something that made everything stop.

“He told her something about Mom.””

“What?””

Nia swallowed.

“He said your first wife left behind something Brenda needed.””

I felt the room spin.

Because suddenly this wasn’t only about custody.

It wasn’t only about the house.

It wasn’t only about control.

Something from my past had been hidden from me.

May you like

Something connected to my late wife.

And Brenda had been searching for it.
