Chapter 8: The Backup Drive That Revealed Everything
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because I was afraid of Brenda.
Because I was afraid of what she had already done.
The picture of Evelyn sitting in that chair stayed in my mind.
Her face.
Her fear.
The message beneath it.
*“Now you understand me.””*
Brenda wanted me to understand something.
She wanted me to know she was willing to cross lines.
But she had made one mistake.
She showed me exactly who she was.
At 5:00 in the morning, I was sitting at the kitchen table when Robert arrived.
He walked in carrying a folder and immediately noticed my expression.
“What happened?””
I handed him my phone.
He looked at the photo.
His face changed.
“Is this real?””
“I don’t know.””
“Who is she?””
“Brenda’s mother.””
He looked at me.
“Her mother?””
“She tried to give me evidence.””
Robert studied the picture carefully.
“This changes things.””
“How?””
“Because if Brenda is willing to intimidate a witness, this is no longer just a family dispute.””
I looked upstairs.
The girls were still asleep.
“I need to get Evelyn.””
Robert nodded.
“We need to do this carefully.””
“I don’t care about carefully.””
“I know.””
His voice became firm.
“That’s exactly why you need me.””
I looked at him.
He was right.
My anger was exactly what Brenda wanted.
She wanted me to react.
She wanted me emotional.
She wanted me reckless.
Because reckless people make mistakes.
I took a breath.
“What’s the plan?””
Robert opened his folder.
“First, we preserve everything.””
“The recordings?””
“Yes.””
“The messages?””
“Yes.””
“Evelyn?””
“We get her safe.””
I nodded.
Then my phone buzzed.
Another message.
From Brenda.
*“Come home alone if you want answers.””*
Robert looked at it.
“No.””
“I have to go.””
“No, you don’t.””
“She has Evelyn.””
“We don’t know that.””
“I saw the picture.””
“And we don’t know when it was taken.””
I looked at him.
“You think she’s bluffing?””
“I think Brenda wants you to walk into a situation where she controls everything.””
I hated that he was right.
But I hated even more that my daughters had spent months living with someone who thought like this.
I walked upstairs.
Nia was already awake.
She was sitting on the edge of her bed.
“You’re leaving.””
It wasn’t a question.
I sat beside her.
“I need to handle something.””
“With Brenda?””
I nodded.
She looked scared.
“Don’t go alone.””
The words surprised me.
“You’re twelve.””
“I know.””
“You shouldn’t have to worry about this.””
She looked at me.
“Dad, I’ve been worrying about this for months.””
I didn’t have an answer.
She looked down.
“Please don’t let her make you disappear.””
My heart broke.
“What do you mean?””
“She always said people leave when things get hard.””
I touched her shoulder.
“I’m not leaving.””
She nodded.
Then she reached into her drawer.
“I have something.””
She pulled out a small envelope.
“What is it?””
“I found it in my backpack.””
I opened it.
Inside was a printed photograph.
It was old.
A picture of me and Nia’s mother.
But on the back was handwriting.
I recognized it.
Brenda’s handwriting.
My hands went cold.
The note said:
*“Some people never move on.””*
I stared at it.
“When did you find this?””
“Last month.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought it was my fault.””
My chest tightened.
“Why would you think that?””
“Because Brenda said you were happier before us.””
I closed my eyes.
There it was again.
The same weapon.
Making my children believe they were the problem.
I put the photo down.
“Nia.””
She looked at me.
“None of this is your fault.””
She nodded.
But I knew she needed more than words.
She needed proof.
And I was going to get it.
Two hours later, Robert and I drove to the location where Brenda had asked me to meet.
An old parking lot behind a closed shopping center.
Empty.
Quiet.
Exactly the kind of place someone chose when they wanted control.
“I don’t like this,” Robert said.
“Neither do I.””
My phone rang.
Brenda.
I answered.
“Where is Evelyn?””
“You brought someone.””
I looked around.
“How do you know?””
“I know everything happening around me.””
A chill ran through me.
“Let her go.””
“You still think you’re in control.””
“No.””
I looked at Robert.
“I think you’re scared.””
Silence.
Then Brenda laughed.
“You sound like your daughter.””
That sentence made my blood boil.
“What did you do?””
“I’m giving you a chance.””
“A chance?””
“Yes.””
“To stop destroying your family.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
“You’re the one who recorded my children.””
“You don’t understand.””
“No. I understand perfectly.””
Her voice became colder.
“You’re making the same mistake everyone makes.””
“What mistake?””
“Thinking I’m the villain.””
I looked around the empty lot.
“You tied up your own mother.””
A pause.
Then:
“She betrayed me.””
“You’re proving my point.””
Another silence.
Then Brenda said,
“Look behind you.””
I turned.
A black car was parked near the entrance.
The door opened.
Evelyn stepped out.
My heart jumped.
She was alive.
But she looked exhausted.
A man was standing beside her.
Not touching her.
Just watching.
Robert immediately whispered,
“Don’t move.””
I noticed something.
The man wasn’t threatening her.
He was holding a bag.
Evelyn walked closer.
Then she shouted,
“Daniel!””
I moved forward.
Robert grabbed my arm.
“Wait.””
Evelyn stopped several feet away.
She looked at me.
Then at Robert.
“I have the drive.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Where is Brenda?””
Evelyn looked back.
“She left.””
That didn’t make sense.
“She let you go?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at the bag in her hand.
“She thought I gave her the wrong one.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“She took the fake drive.””
Robert stepped forward.
“You made a copy?””
Evelyn nodded.
“I knew she would destroy the evidence.””
She handed me the bag.
Inside was a small black drive.
“Everything is there.””
“What kind of evidence?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“The original videos.””
I held the drive.
“And?””
“Messages.””
“Between who?””
Her expression changed.
“Brenda and James.””
I felt sick.
“What about?””
She hesitated.
“About the house.””
My phone buzzed.
A new message.
From James.
*“We need to talk before Daniel finds out everything.””*
I showed Robert.
His face tightened.
Then another message arrived.
This time from Brenda.
*“You should ask James why he was really helping me.””*
I stared at the screen.
Because suddenly I understood.
James wasn’t just a person who gave bad advice.
He was involved.
But why?
I looked at Evelyn.
“What’s on the drive?””
She swallowed.
“The reason Brenda was so sure she would win.””
I plugged the drive into my laptop.
The first folder opened.
There were hundreds of files.
Videos.
Audio recordings.
Documents.
Then I saw one file.
The title made my blood run cold.
*Daniel_Carter_Guardianship_Plan*
I clicked it.
The screen filled with a document.
A legal document.
My name.
My daughters’ names.
And Brenda’s signature.
Robert leaned closer.
“What is that?””
I kept scrolling.
Then I saw the date.
It was created six months ago.
Before the dinner.
Before the recording.
Before I ever suspected anything.
My hands went numb.
Because the document wasn’t about divorce.
It wasn’t about separation.
It wasn’t about the house.
It was something far worse.
A plan to prove I was an unfit father.
And at the bottom of the page was one sentence:
*“Temporary custody transfer to Brenda Carter pending investigation.””*
I stared at it.
The entire plan finally made sense.
The dinner.
The videos.
The lies.
The report.
Everything.
Brenda wasn’t trying to make me leave my daughters.
She was trying to make the law take them away.
Then another file opened automatically.
A video.
Brenda was sitting at our kitchen table.
Talking to someone off camera.
I recognized the voice.
James.
Brenda smiled.
“Once Daniel loses custody, the house becomes much easier.””
James replied,
“And the girls?””
Brenda looked directly into the camera.
Cold.
Calm.
“They’ll adjust.””
I stopped the video.
Because I had heard enough.
But then Robert pointed at the screen.
“Daniel.””
I looked.
There was a timestamp.
And a location tag.
The video wasn’t recorded at our house.
It was recorded somewhere else.
Somewhere I knew.
A place that made my blood run cold.
Because the recording had been made inside my office.
The one place I thought nobody could enter.
May you like
The one place only one other person had a key to.
James.
