Chapter 9: The Night My Father Tried to Kill His Own Blood

I had never been more terrified in my life.

Not when Elena disappeared.

Not when I heard her voice beneath the pool.

Not even when I discovered that Richard had stolen my childhood and hidden my real father.

Because this time, my daughters were in his hands.

I grabbed Detective Mitchell's arm.

“Find them.””

“We're tracking the vehicle.””

“Then track faster!””

“Marcus, listen to me. If we rush in without a plan, we could get the girls killed.””

I forced myself to breathe.

Ava and Lily were somewhere inside that black vehicle.

Two little girls who had already suffered more than any child should.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Where is the old estate's underground entrance?””

She pointed toward the map on the detective's laptop.

“Behind the east garage. There's a service elevator.””

“Can it be accessed from outside?””

“Yes. But the control panel requires a security card.””

I looked at her.

“Do you have one?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she removed a small card from her jacket.

I took it.

Detective Mitchell stepped between us.

“You're not going there alone.””

“I'm not asking permission.””

“Mr. Reynolds, your daughters' lives depend on you staying calm.””

I stared at her.

“Then tell me how to get them back.””

She looked at Vanessa.

“Can you identify the men working for Richard?””

Vanessa nodded.

“There are three. One is named Mercer. Another is called Dean. The third is a former military contractor named Victor.””

“Which one has the children?””

“Probably Victor.””

Detective Mitchell immediately radioed her team.

“Priority suspect Victor. Possible armed hostage situation. Request tactical support.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

“Why does Richard need the original will?””

“Because the copy isn't enough to transfer the trust.””

“Where is the original?””

She looked at me.

“Catherine hid it somewhere in the house.””

I remembered the old letter.

The words about the man who raised me.

Then I remembered the metal box in the medical room.

“There's another location,” I said.

Vanessa frowned.

“What?””

“The letter mentioned Catherine's burial place.””

She looked confused.

I turned toward Detective Mitchell.

“Richard's old estate has a family mausoleum.””

Mitchell nodded.

“We'll check it.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“There's a second entrance beneath the mausoleum.””

I looked at her.

“How do you know?””

“Because Richard showed me.””

She explained that the mausoleum had been built over an older underground archive. It contained Catherine's personal papers and the original family trust documents.

Richard had searched it repeatedly but never found the hidden compartment.

I looked at the microSD card.

“Maybe Catherine left the original will there.””

Vanessa nodded.

“And if Richard finds it first, he'll destroy it.””

Detective Mitchell made a decision.

“We're splitting into two teams. My officers will secure the estate and search for the children. You and Vanessa will identify the archive entrance. Nobody goes underground without police authorization.””

I agreed.

But I knew one thing.

If Richard had my daughters, I wasn't going to wait while he decided their future.

The old Reynolds estate looked different at night.

The massive iron gates stood open.

The garden lights were off.

A black SUV sat near the entrance.

Detective Mitchell parked behind a police vehicle.

We stepped out.

Daniel Reynolds was waiting near the side entrance.

He had refused to remain at the townhouse.

When he saw me, he approached.

“Marcus.””

I shook my head.

“Not now.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“You brought her here?””

“She knows where the archive is.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“She helped Richard destroy this family.””

“She also gave us the recording.””

He said nothing.

I looked at him.

“You knew Richard was capable of this?””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I knew he was dangerous. I didn't know he had gone this far.””

I felt anger rise again.

“You left me with him.””

Daniel swallowed.

“I was trying to get back to you.””

“For thirty-eight years?””

He didn't answer.

I looked away.

I didn't have time to process the man who claimed to be my father.

I had two daughters to save.

Detective Mitchell approached.

“Let's move.””

We entered the estate.

The main hall was dark.

Dust covered the furniture.

Old family photographs lined the staircase.

I stopped in front of one.

It showed Catherine holding me as a baby.

Richard stood beside her.

Daniel stood on the other side.

All three were smiling.

I stared at the picture.

Three people.

One child.

And a lie that had lasted nearly four decades.

Vanessa touched my arm.

“The entrance is through the study.””

We crossed the hall.

She moved a large painting aside, revealing a keypad.

She entered six numbers.

The wall clicked.

A narrow door opened.

Behind it was a staircase descending into darkness.

Detective Mitchell raised her flashlight.

“Police first.””

Two officers went down.

We followed.

The corridor smelled of damp stone.

At the end was a steel door with an old family crest.

Vanessa scanned her card.

The lock opened.

Inside was a room filled with filing cabinets.

Old photographs.

Metal boxes.

And a large wooden desk.

I approached the desk.

There was a small brass plaque.

*CATHERINE REYNOLDS — FAMILY ARCHIVE.*

Daniel stepped beside me.

“Mother kept everything here.””

I opened the first drawer.

Inside were letters.

Dozens of them.

Some were addressed to Daniel.

Others were addressed to Richard.

I found one with my name.

The handwriting was familiar.

I opened it.

Marcus,

I hope you grow up knowing that you were loved by both your parents. Your real father has never abandoned you. He has been kept away because of my other son's greed.

One day, you may discover that blood does not make a family. Love does.

If you ever have children of your own, protect them from anyone who believes they are entitled to their future.

I lowered the letter.

Daniel was crying silently.

Then Detective Mitchell called from the far corner.

“There's something here.””

She had opened a small wall compartment.

Inside was a thick envelope sealed with red wax.

The original will.

I stepped forward.

My name was written across the front.

*TO MY GRANDSON, MARCUS REYNOLDS.*

I opened it carefully.

The document contained Catherine's final instructions.

The trust would pass to Lily, but only if certain conditions were met.

The first was that Daniel's identity be legally restored.

The second was that the original records of Richard's financial misconduct be submitted to an independent court.

The third was that all descendants of Catherine be protected from interference.

Then I reached the final page.

A handwritten addition.

If Richard attempts to harm any of my grandchildren, the entire trust shall be transferred to an independent foundation for their benefit. No family member may control it.

I looked at Vanessa.

“That's why he wants the original.””

She nodded.

“If this document reaches the court, he loses everything.””

A loud metallic crash echoed from somewhere above us.

Detective Mitchell immediately raised her weapon.

“Everyone stay down!””

Another crash.

Then the lights went out.

A voice came through the darkness.

“Marcus.””

I froze.

Richard.

His voice echoed through the archive.

“You always were a difficult child.””

I turned toward the staircase.

A flashlight beam swept across the room.

Then Richard appeared.

He was holding a pistol.

Behind him stood Victor.

And between them were Ava and Lily.

My daughters.

Ava was crying.

Lily was holding her rabbit.

“Daddy!”” Ava screamed.

I stepped forward.

Richard raised the gun.

“Stop.””

I stopped.

“Let them go.””

Richard smiled.

“You still don't understand.””

“Take me instead.””

“I don't want you.””

He pointed toward Lily.

“I want the original will.””

I held it up.

“Here.””

Richard's eyes followed the document.

“Give it to me.””

I looked at Ava.

“Are you okay, sweetheart?””

She nodded, crying.

Lily looked directly at me.

“Daddy, don't give him the paper.””

Richard turned toward her.

“Be quiet.””

Lily shook her head.

“Mommy said Grandma left it for me.””

Richard's expression darkened.

“Your grandmother was a foolish old woman.””

Lily clutched her rabbit.

“She loved me.””

For a moment, Richard looked genuinely disturbed.

Then he pointed the gun at Daniel.

“You. Come here.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Let the children go, Richard.””

Richard laughed.

“Still pretending you're their father?””

Daniel's voice was steady.

“I am their grandfather.””

“Not anymore.””

Richard shifted the gun toward me.

“Marcus, give me the will.””

I held the document tighter.

“You stole my childhood. You stole my wife. You stole my daughter from the hospital. And now you want to steal my daughters' future.””

Richard's smile vanished.

“You owe me everything.””

“No.””

“I raised you!””

“You lied to me!””

“I made you a man!””

“You made me your prisoner!””

His face twisted.

Then he looked at Ava.

“Your daughter is exactly like your mother. Always asking questions.””

He grabbed her arm.

Ava screamed.

I moved instinctively.

The gun fired.

A deafening bang filled the archive.

Daniel staggered backward.

Blood spread across his shoulder.

“DANIEL!””

He fell against the desk.

Detective Mitchell shouted.

“DROP THE WEAPON!””

Victor grabbed Lily and pulled her toward the exit.

Vanessa rushed forward.

“Lily!””

Richard turned toward her.

“You ungrateful little girl!””

He raised the gun again.

But Vanessa threw herself between him and the children.

The shot struck the wall.

I lunged.

Richard fell backward.

The pistol skidded across the floor.

Detective Mitchell tackled him while two officers rushed in.

Victor tried to escape with Lily, but Vanessa grabbed his jacket.

He shoved her into the wall.

Lily slipped free.

She ran toward me.

I caught her and pulled her into my arms.

Ava ran behind her.

“Daddy!””

I wrapped both girls against my chest.

“I've got you. I've got you.””

Then I looked toward Daniel.

He was lying on the floor, one hand pressed against his shoulder.

I rushed to him.

“Stay with me!””

Daniel looked up.

“Are the girls safe?””

I nodded.

“They're safe.””

He managed a weak smile.

“Good.””

I grabbed his hand.

“Don't you dare die. You hear me?””

He squeezed my fingers.

“Marcus…”

“What?””

He looked toward Richard, who was being handcuffed.

“There's one more thing you need to know.””

I leaned closer.

“What?””

Daniel's voice dropped to a whisper.

“Richard wasn't acting alone.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

He swallowed.

“Someone inside the family helped him from the beginning.””

I looked toward Vanessa.

She was sitting on the floor, holding Lily.

Then Daniel whispered the name.

“Your mother.””

I froze.

“My mother is dead.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No, Marcus.””

He closed his eyes.

“Catherine is alive.””

The entire room went silent.

Detective Mitchell looked toward the sealed archive door.

Then her radio crackled.

“Detective, we have a problem.””

She turned.

“What?””

The officer's voice trembled.

“We searched the mausoleum.””

A pause.

“There's an empty coffin.””

Then came the words that changed everything.

“Someone has been using Catherine Reynolds's grave as a hiding place.””

I looked at Daniel.

He was staring at me.

And for the first time, I understood.

My grandmother hadn't simply left behind a secret will.

She had left behind a secret.

May you like

One that someone had been protecting for nearly thirty years.

And that person was still alive.
