Chapter 3: The Secret Daughter
The rescue team arrived with six firefighters, two paramedics, and a specialist in confined-space operations.
They immediately secured the pool area.
One firefighter examined the metal hatch while another checked the control cabinet.
“Sir, this isn't a standard swimming pool installation,” the team leader told me.
“What is it?””
He pointed toward the exposed metal frame.
“This is a reinforced access shaft. Someone built a sealed chamber beneath your property.””
“Can you get inside?””
“We're trying. But the chamber appears to have an independent flooding mechanism.””
“How long?””
He glanced at the control screen.
“I can't give you a safe estimate.””
I grabbed his arm.
“There's a woman down there. My wife. She's alive.””
He studied my face.
“Then we're going to do everything possible to reach her.””
Behind him, Richard was speaking quietly with two uniformed officers.
Vanessa sat on a garden bench, holding her head in her hands.
Daniel stood beside Ava.
I walked toward her.
“Daniel, take Ava inside.””
She immediately protested.
“No! I want Daddy!””
I crouched.
“Baby, I need you to stay somewhere safe.””
“Mommy said not to let Grandpa take me.””
I looked over her shoulder.
Richard was watching us.
His expression was unreadable.
I gently touched Ava's cheek.
“Did Mommy tell you why?””
Ava nodded.
“She said Grandpa took her away because he wanted something.””
“What did he want?””
“She didn't tell me.””
I kissed her forehead.
“Stay with Daniel. Don't go anywhere with anyone else. Understand?””
She nodded.
I stood and walked toward Vanessa.
She looked up when I approached.
“Marcus, please.””
I stopped in front of her.
“Start talking.””
She wiped her eyes.
“I never wanted things to go this far.””
I stared at her.
“Fourteen months. You watched me grieve my wife for fourteen months. You moved into her bedroom.
You wore her perfume. You sat beside my daughter and told her she had to accept that her mother was dead.””
Vanessa lowered her head.
“I know.””
“You let me propose to you tonight.””
“I didn't know what else to do.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You didn't know what else to do? You could have told me the truth!””
She looked up.
“Your father said he would kill Elena if I told you.””
My hands curled into fists.
“Why would he say that?””
Vanessa looked toward Richard.
“Because Elena knew about the money.””
“What money?””
“The money that disappeared from Reynolds Holdings three months before the accident.””
I stared at her.
She continued.
“Your father had been moving company funds through several offshore accounts. Elena discovered the transfers while reviewing the financial records. She found evidence that millions of dollars had been redirected into a private investment network.””
“That's impossible. My father never handled the financial accounts.””
Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.
“He controlled everything, Marcus. He just made sure you never saw it.””
I looked toward the house.
My father had always insisted that I focus on construction and property development while he handled the company's financial structure.
I had trusted him.
Completely.
“What does Elena have to do with you?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she said, “I was working for him.””
I stared.
“As what?””
“Private security consultant.””
I almost laughed.
“You were an assistant at a marketing firm when I met you.””
“That was my cover.””
“You approached me deliberately?””
She nodded.
“Richard wanted someone close to you. Someone who could monitor your decisions and make sure you didn't start looking into the company's accounts.””
My stomach twisted.
“So our entire relationship was a job?””
“Not entirely.””
I stepped backward.
“Don't.””
“Marcus, I did fall in love with you.””
“Don't you dare say that.””
She started crying harder.
“I know how it sounds.””
“It sounds like you helped my father imprison my wife.””
She looked down.
“I didn't know he was going to keep her there.””
I stared at her.
“Then what did you think he was doing?””
Vanessa's silence answered me.
Before I could speak again, one of the firefighters shouted.
“We've got something!””
I turned.
A firefighter had lowered a camera into the opening.
He was staring at a monitor.
“There's a second room beyond the chamber!””
I rushed over.
“What do you see?””
“Looks like a corridor. There's a door at the far end.””
“Is anyone there?””
The firefighter adjusted the camera.
Then his face changed.
“Sir…”
“What?””
“There are two beds.””
My heart stopped.
“Two?””
He nodded.
“One adult-sized. One smaller.””
I looked toward Ava.
Daniel had moved her farther away, but she was watching us.
The firefighter continued.
“There are restraints attached to the adult bed.””
I felt sick.
Then he turned the camera slightly.
A child's drawing appeared on the wall.
A yellow sun.
A blue house.
Three people holding hands.
And beneath it, written in red crayon:
*MOMMY, COME HOME.*
I stepped back.
Elena had been alive in that chamber.
But why was there a child's bed?
And who had been sleeping in it?
The team leader looked at me.
“Sir, we found another access panel on the opposite side of the chamber. It appears to lead into the old service basement.””
“Can you open it?””
“We'll need to locate the mechanical release.””
Richard suddenly approached.
“That's enough.””
The team leader turned.
“Sir, please step back.””
Richard pointed toward the camera.
“You cannot enter that chamber without a court order.””
I stared at him.
“A court order?””
“This property belongs to my company.””
“No. It belongs to me.””
“The original construction was financed through Reynolds Holdings.””
I stepped toward him.
“Are you seriously arguing about property ownership while my wife is trapped beneath it?””
Richard lowered his voice.
“Marcus, think carefully. Whatever happens next cannot be undone.””
I looked at him.
“Good.””
He grabbed my shoulder.
“You don't understand what Elena did.””
I shoved his hand away.
“Then tell me.””
He looked toward Vanessa.
She shook her head.
Richard exhaled.
“Your wife wasn't the first woman to discover those accounts.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“Before Elena, there was another woman.””
“Who?””
He hesitated.
Then Vanessa answered from behind us.
“His first wife.””
I turned slowly.
“My father was married before?””
Richard's expression darkened.
“That's none of your concern.””
Vanessa stood.
“Her name was Catherine. She died when Marcus was a baby.””
I stared at my father.
“You told me Mom died in a car accident.””
“She did.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Catherine was investigating the same financial accounts. She disappeared six months before the accident was reported.””
My father stepped toward her.
“Be quiet.””
But Vanessa continued.
“She had a daughter.””
My mind struggled to process the words.
“What daughter?””
Vanessa looked at Ava.
“An older half-sister.””
I felt my knees weaken.
Richard's voice became dangerously quiet.
“Enough.””
I turned toward him.
“Where is she?””
He said nothing.
I grabbed his coat.
“WHERE IS SHE?””
The rescue team leader suddenly shouted.
“Sir! We've opened the outer access panel!””
I released my father and rushed toward the pool.
A firefighter climbed down into the service shaft with a breathing apparatus.
Another followed.
The camera feed flickered.
Then a voice came through the radio.
“We've got a survivor.””
My heart slammed against my ribs.
“Is it Elena?””
A burst of static.
Then the firefighter answered.
“Female. Adult. She's conscious.””
I closed my eyes.
For the first time in fourteen months, I allowed myself to believe.
Elena was coming home.
But the radio crackled again.
“Sir, there's something else.””
I grabbed the receiver.
“What?””
“The adult survivor isn't alone.””
A pause.
Then I heard a little girl's voice through the radio.
“Daddy?””
My blood turned to ice.
The voice continued.
“Is Ava there?””
I slowly turned toward my daughter.
Ava was staring at the radio.
Her face had gone completely pale.
Then she whispered something that made my heart break.
“Daddy…”
I looked at her.
“What is it, sweetheart?””
Ava pointed toward the pool.
“That's my sister.””
And from the radio came Elena's trembling voice.
“Marcus, listen to me. Don't let Richard take either of our daughters.””
My father suddenly turned and ran toward the front gates.
But Daniel was already standing in his way.
And when two police officers grabbed Richard's arms, he shouted the words that revealed how much worse the truth really was.
“You fools! If Elena comes out of that chamber, she'll tell him what happened to his real daughter!””
I stopped moving.
My real daughter?
I looked at Ava.
Then at the rescue team.
May you like
And finally at the dark opening beneath the pool.
How many secrets had my father buried beneath my home?
