Chapter 9: My Son's Name Was on the Application
I read the email again.
Michael Harris.
My son's name.
Listed as a co-applicant.
I looked at him.
“You told me you didn't know about this.””
“I didn't know she had submitted it.””
“But your name is on the application.””
He nodded.
“She told me she was checking whether the property could qualify for financing.””
“Did you agree to be a co-applicant?””
He looked down.
“Yes.””
I felt as if someone had pulled the floor out from under me.
“Michael, did you think I had agreed to use my property as collateral?””
He shook his head.
“Not exactly.””
“Then what did you think?””
He took a breath.
“Vanessa said she would discuss it with you after the anniversary dinner.””
I stared at him.
“So you agreed to apply for financing against my property before asking me?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“I thought it was just a preliminary inquiry.””
I sat down.
“Michael, you are thirty-five years old. You understand the difference between asking someone for permission and making plans with their property before asking.””
“I know.””
“Then why did you do it?””
He looked at me.
“Because I was scared.””
The answer was so simple that it almost made me angry.
“Scared of what?””
“Losing everything.””
He explained that his financial situation had deteriorated over the previous six months.
He had accumulated debt trying to maintain the lifestyle he and Vanessa had built.
They had expensive furniture, a luxury vehicle, frequent restaurant bills, and vacations they couldn't comfortably afford.
He had hidden the extent of the problem from me.
He had also hidden it from several friends.
Vanessa, however, knew.
According to Michael, she had become increasingly anxious about their financial future.
“She said we couldn't keep living like this,” he explained.
I looked at him.
“She was right about that.””
“I know.””
“But instead of reducing your expenses, you started looking for ways to borrow against my property.””
He nodded.
“I didn't think it would go this far.””
I leaned back.
“Michael, you need to understand that I am not responsible for maintaining the lifestyle you and Vanessa chose.””
He wiped his eyes.
“I know.””
“Do you?””
“Yes.””
I looked out toward the ocean.
I wanted to believe him.
But I had heard too many apologies over the previous few days.
And none of them could change the fact that my son had allowed my personal information to be used without permission.
I reached for my phone.
“I'm sending this application to David.””
Michael looked alarmed.
“Mom, please don't.””
“Why?””
“Because if the lender investigates, Vanessa could get into serious trouble.””
I looked at him.
“Did you know she used my name?””
He hesitated.
“I knew she had the property information.””
“Did you know she listed me as the collateral owner?””
He nodded.
“Then you understand why I have to protect myself.””
He stood.
“I'll talk to her.””
“Michael, this isn't a conversation you can fix by asking her to behave.””
“She's my wife.””
“And I'm your mother.””
He looked at me helplessly.
“I don't know what you want me to do.””
I softened my voice.
“I want you to tell the truth. I want you to stop participating in anything involving my property. And I want you to understand that your marriage problems cannot be solved with my money.””
He nodded slowly.
Then he walked away.
I immediately forwarded the email to David.
His response was brief.
*David:* Do not contact the lender yourself yet. I'll review the application and confirm whether any formal submission or record exists. We need to preserve everything.
I followed his instructions.
Later that afternoon, I sat on the balcony with a cup of coffee.
The resort was full of happy families.
Children were running along the beach. Couples were taking photographs near the pool.
I wondered how many people had arrived on vacation carrying problems nobody else could see.
Then my phone rang.
It was Linda, Vanessa's mother.
I nearly didn't answer.
But curiosity won.
“Hello?””
“Carol, it's Linda.””
“Hello, Linda.””
Her voice sounded strained.
“I think we need to talk.””
“About what?””
“Vanessa told me what's happening.””
I looked toward the ocean.
“I'm sure she did.””
“Carol, she's very upset.””
“I imagine.””
“She says you've involved lawyers and the hotel.””
“I contacted my attorney after discovering documents bearing my signature that I never signed.””
Linda sighed.
“Oh, dear.””
I waited.
She continued.
“I'm sure this is all a misunderstanding.””
“Then perhaps you can explain why your daughter tried to transfer my reservation to your name.””
There was silence.
Finally, Linda said, “She told me you had agreed to let us take over.””
“I did not.””
“She said you were tired of handling everything.””
“Linda, I am sixty-two, not ninety-two. I can manage my own reservations.””
Linda sounded uncomfortable.
“I don't think she meant to hurt you.””
“Did you know about the property documents?””
Another pause.
“Carol, I don't want to get involved in family business.””
I almost laughed.
“Your daughter listed you as a replacement guest and attempted to use my property as collateral. I think we're past the point of pretending this is ordinary family business.””
Linda exhaled.
“Vanessa said Michael needed help.””
“Then she should have helped him manage his expenses.””
“She was trying to protect her marriage.””
I closed my eyes.
“Linda, protecting a marriage does not require taking something from another person.””
She became quiet.
Then she said something unexpected.
“Carol, there's something I think you should know.””
I straightened.
“What?””
“Vanessa asked me to come to Cabo before you arrived.””
“Why?””
“She said there was going to be a family discussion.””
“What kind of discussion?””
“About the property. She wanted me there because she thought you would listen to another woman.””
I stared at the phone.
“Did you know about the proposed power of attorney?””
“Yes.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Did you know she had prepared a document with my signature?””
Linda's voice dropped.
“I saw a copy.””
I stood.
“Linda, did you know it wasn't signed by me?””
She was silent.
Then she whispered, “I suspected.””
I gripped the balcony railing.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Vanessa said Michael had already agreed.””
I closed my eyes.
I was beginning to understand how far this had spread.
“Linda, did you help her submit anything?””
“No.””
“Did you provide any financial information?””
“No.””
“Did you ever tell her that I had agreed to transfer my property?””
“No.””
I believed her hesitation more than I believed her denial.
Before I could ask anything else, she said, “Carol, I think you should speak to Vanessa. She's not thinking clearly.””
“I have spoken to Vanessa.””
“She is afraid.””
“Of what?””
Linda took a breath.
“Of losing Michael.””
I looked toward the beach.
“Then perhaps she should stop giving him reasons to lose trust in her.””
Linda didn't respond.
After a moment, I ended the call.
That evening, Michael came to my room.
He looked worse than he had the previous day.
“Mom, Vanessa wants to talk.””
“About what?””
“She says she wants to explain everything.””
I nodded.
“Where?””
“She wants us to meet in the lobby.””
“Fine.””
We walked downstairs together.
Vanessa was standing near the reception desk.
She looked composed, but her hands were trembling.
When she saw me, she immediately began speaking.
“Carol, I think we need to put everything behind us.””
I looked at her.
“That's not how this works.””
She sighed.
“Can we at least talk?””
“I'm listening.””
She glanced at Michael.
“Alone.””
I shook my head.
“No. Whatever happened involved both of you. I'm not having another conversation where one person says something and the other pretends not to know.””
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“Fine.””
She crossed her arms.
“I want to explain the loan inquiry.””
“Go ahead.””
“It was only preliminary. Nobody was taking your property.””
“Then why was my name listed as the collateral owner?””
“Because the system required an owner.””
“Did you have my permission?””
She hesitated.
“No.””
“Did you have my permission to prepare a power of attorney?””
“No.””
“Did you have my permission to sign my name on the resort authorization?””
She looked away.
“I didn't think it would become such a big issue.””
I felt a strange calm.
“Vanessa, you don't get to decide whether someone else's signature is a big issue.””
She raised her voice.
“You're acting like I tried to steal your house!””
I stared at her.
“You attempted to arrange financing using my property without my authorization.””
“I was trying to help Michael!””
“Then why didn't you ask me?””
“Because you would have said no!””
The words echoed through the lobby.
Michael looked at her.
“Vanessa.””
She turned toward him.
“What?””
He shook his head.
“You just admitted it.””
She looked confused.
“Admitted what?””
“That you knew Mom wouldn't agree, so you tried to arrange everything without her.””
Vanessa's face turned red.
“Don't pretend you're innocent, Michael. You wanted the money too.””
He looked stunned.
“That's not true.””
“You signed the inquiry!””
“I didn't know you had listed her property as collateral!””
“You knew we needed a solution!””
Michael stepped back.
I watched them argue.
For the first time, I wasn't the target.
They were finally speaking to each other without pretending everything was fine.
Then Vanessa turned toward me.
“You know what? You have plenty of money. You have that rental property, your savings, your house.
Michael is your only child. Eventually, all of it will go to him anyway.””
I stared at her.
“Eventually?””
She lifted her chin.
“Why make things difficult now?””
I felt a chill run down my spine.
“Because I am alive now.””
She blinked.
I continued.
“My property belongs to me. My savings belong to me. My decisions belong to me. I don't owe you an early inheritance because you and Michael have made financial choices you can no longer afford.””
Vanessa's expression twisted.
“You're selfish.””
I nodded slowly.
“Perhaps. But at least I'm selfish with my own money.””
Michael stepped between us.
“Vanessa, stop.””
She turned toward him.
“You're choosing her again?””
He looked at his wife.
“No. I'm choosing to stop lying.””
The words seemed to hit her harder than anything I had said.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa grabbed her handbag.
“Fine. You two can have each other.””
She walked toward the elevators.
Michael didn't follow.
I looked at him.
“Are you all right?””
He nodded, although his eyes were wet.
“I'm not sure.””
I placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Then take some time to think.””
He looked at me.
“Mom, I don't want to lose you.””
“You won't lose me because I refuse to give away my property. But you may lose my trust if you keep choosing dishonesty.””
He nodded.
Then he walked away.
I returned to my room.
There was a new email from David.
*David:* I've located the preliminary financing inquiry. It has not resulted in a recorded lien or property transfer. However, there is an additional document attached to the application that I need you to review.
My heart began beating faster.
I opened the attachment.
It was a letter.
The heading read:
*Statement of Intended Family Financial Arrangement.*
The document claimed that I had agreed to use the rental property to help Michael and Vanessa secure financing.
It also stated that I intended to transfer ownership to Michael within twelve months.
At the bottom was my name.
And beneath it, a sentence that made my blood run cold.
*I voluntarily agree that my son may manage the property and its income as needed for the benefit of his household.*
I had never written those words.
I had never spoken them.
I hadn't even considered giving him that authority.
Then I noticed the date.
The document had been created six weeks earlier.
And the witness listed beneath my signature was someone I recognized.
Not Vanessa.
Not Linda.
Not Michael.
It was the name of the man who had handled Robert's estate paperwork years ago.
A man I had trusted completely.
I immediately called David.
“David, who prepared this?””
He paused.
“That's what I've been trying to establish.””
I looked at the witness line.
“Do you recognize the name?””
“Yes,” he answered.
“It's the former estate consultant who worked with your late husband.””
I felt my knees weaken.
Robert had trusted that man.
May you like
So had I.
And suddenly, I realized that Vanessa might not have been the only person involved.
