Chapter 6: The Woman Who Wanted My Place

I didn't leave my room for nearly an hour.

I sat at the small desk near the balcony, reading Vanessa's message repeatedly.

Carol has agreed to step back and let us handle the vacation ourselves.

It was an extraordinary sentence.

Not because it was complicated.

Because it was completely false.

I had never agreed to step back.

I had never authorized a transfer.

I had never told Vanessa she could use my name.

Yet she had written those words as if my agreement were an established fact.

I forwarded the message to Patricia.

Her response came within minutes.

*Patricia:* Preserve everything. Don't respond emotionally. You need to make sure your card issuer and the resort have the same information.

And Carol? Stop protecting people from the truth.

I read the message twice.

Then I called Daniel.

“Mrs. Harris, good morning.””

“Daniel, I'd like to formally confirm that I did not authorize any change of guest responsibility or payment arrangements.””

“Of course.””

“I also want all future changes requiring my approval to be verified directly with me.””

“We can add a note to your reservation.””

“Please do.””

“Would you like us to restrict access to the payment information?””

“Yes.””

He explained the process.

The hotel could preserve the original booking details, record my objection, and require additional verification before accepting any request involving the primary guest or payment authorization.

I agreed.

When the call ended, I felt slightly better.

At least the resort now understood what was happening.

But the problem wasn't limited to the resort.

I still had to deal with my son.

And I had no idea how much he knew.

At noon, I went downstairs to have lunch.

I chose a table overlooking the pool.

A waiter brought me a menu.

“Would you like something refreshing, ma'am?””

“Just iced tea, please.””

I ordered a chicken salad and tried to enjoy the warm breeze.

Then I saw Vanessa walking toward me.

She was wearing a bright pink swimsuit cover-up and carrying her phone.

She looked irritated.

“Carol.””

I looked up.

“Good afternoon.””

“Can we talk?””

“Of course.””

She sat down without asking.

For a moment, she stared at the table.

Then she spoke.

“I think there's been a misunderstanding.””

I folded my hands.

“About what?””

“The paperwork.””

“What paperwork?””

She gave me an impatient look.

“The authorization forms. Michael explained everything.””

I waited.

“Those were just meant to make the booking easier. Nobody was trying to steal anything.””

I looked directly at her.

“Did you submit the forms?””

She shifted in her chair.

“Yes.””

“Did you sign my name?””

Her jaw tightened.

“I filled in the information.””

“That's not what I asked.””

She sighed.

“Michael said you wouldn't mind.””

“Michael had no authority to give permission on my behalf.””

“He's your son!””

“And you're his wife. Neither of those facts gives you permission to sign my name.””

She leaned forward.

“Can you stop acting like I'm some criminal?””

I was quiet for a moment.

Then I asked, “Why did you tell the resort I had agreed to transfer the reservation?””

She blinked.

“Because you were no longer paying for it.””

“I removed my card after you publicly denied that I had paid for anything.””

“You made me look terrible!””

I stared at her.

“Vanessa, I didn't make you say those things.””

She looked toward the pool.

A family was laughing nearby.

A child splashed water over his father's shirt.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Do you have any idea how humiliating it is to have your husband's mother pay for your anniversary vacation?””

I took a slow breath.

“You accepted the gift.””

“Because Michael wanted it!””

“And you wanted it too.””

She looked at me.

“You don't understand.””

“Then explain it.””

She glanced at her phone.

“My parents always struggled. My father worked two jobs, and my mother was constantly worrying about bills. I promised myself I would never live like that.””

I listened.

Vanessa continued.

“I worked hard to build my career. I don't want people thinking I can't afford my own life.””

“Then why pretend?””

Her eyes flashed.

“Because people judge women!””

“People also judge dishonesty.””

She stood abruptly.

“You think you're better than me because you have money.””

I looked up at her.

“No. I think I'm entitled to decide what happens to my money.””

She grabbed her phone.

“Fine. Keep your money. Keep your precious reservation. I hope you enjoy sitting alone in that room while everyone else has a good time.””

She turned and walked away.

I watched her disappear toward the pool.

My food arrived.

I thanked the waiter and began eating.

I wasn't going to let Vanessa ruin every meal of my vacation.

An hour later, I returned to my room.

There was an email from the resort.

Daniel had attached a complete copy of the account-change request, including the original submission details.

I opened the document.

The request had been submitted from a device registered to Vanessa's email account.

The document contained a statement that I had voluntarily transferred financial responsibility.

But there was another section.

*Reason for Guest Change: Family arrangement.*

Underneath it, Vanessa had written:

*Original guest is elderly and no longer wishes to participate in the trip.*

I stared at those words.

Elderly.

No longer wishes to participate.

I was sixty-two years old.

I could manage my own finances, book my own travel, and walk several miles without difficulty.

Vanessa had described me as someone incapable of participating in a vacation I had personally organized.

I felt a wave of anger rise.

Then I noticed something else.

The form included a contact number.

It wasn't Michael's.

It belonged to Linda, Vanessa's mother.

I looked at the document again.

Linda had apparently been involved in the attempted transfer.

I remembered the previous evening's conversation with Michael.

Vanessa had wanted to list her mother as the new primary guest.

Now it appeared her mother had been part of the arrangement from the beginning.

I picked up my phone and called Michael.

He answered after several rings.

“Hey, Mom.””

“Where are you?””

“By the pool.””

“Can you come to my room?””

There was a pause.

“Is something wrong?””

“Yes.””

“Okay. Give me ten minutes.””

He arrived fifteen minutes later.

I showed him the email.

He read it silently.

Then his expression changed.

“Mom, I didn't know about this.””

“Didn't know about what?””

“The part about you being elderly and not wanting to participate.””

I pointed to the screen.

“Did you know your wife wanted to transfer the reservation to her mother?””

He nodded slowly.

“She mentioned it yesterday.””

“And?””

“She said her mother might come down for the weekend.””

“Why?””

He rubbed his face.

“She wanted someone else here who could help with the payment arrangements.””

“Her mother has a declined credit card.””

He looked up.

“What?””

“Daniel told me the payment was declined.””

Michael stared at the document again.

“I didn't know that.””

I sat opposite him.

“Michael, I want you to tell me the truth. How much of this did you know before we arrived?””

He remained silent.

“Did you know Vanessa wanted to remove me from the reservation?””

He nodded.

“Did you know she had contacted the resort?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know she had submitted documents with my signature?””

His face tightened.

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.

“Did you help her?””

He immediately shook his head.

“No, Mom.””

“Did you provide her with my personal information?””

He hesitated.

I stared at him.

“Michael?””

“I gave her the booking confirmation.””

“That wasn't what I asked.””

He swallowed.

“She asked for the payment details.””

“And you gave them to her?””

“Yes.””

I felt the room grow very quiet.

“What exactly did you give her?””

“The reservation number. The original payment confirmation. The last four digits of your card.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“She said she wanted to check whether the resort could transfer the package to her account.””

“Did she tell you she intended to submit a form with my signature?””

“No.””

“Did you ask?””

He looked down.

“No.””

I stood and walked toward the balcony.

“Michael, you gave your wife the information she needed to attempt to change my financial arrangements.””

“I didn't think she'd use it that way.””

I turned around.

“Then you should have thought before handing it over.””

He stood too.

“Mom, I'm trying to fix this.””

“How?””

“I told Vanessa she has to stop.””

“And what did she say?””

He looked toward the door.

“She said you were being vindictive.””

I almost laughed.

“Of course she did.””

He stepped closer.

“Mom, please. I know I handled the airport badly. I should have defended you.””

“Yes.””

“I was wrong.””

“Yes.””

He looked genuinely ashamed.

“I'm sorry.””

I studied his face.

For a moment, I saw the little boy who used to run into my bedroom after a nightmare.

I remembered how he used to hold my hand when we crossed busy streets.

I remembered Robert teaching him to ride a bicycle in the driveway.

I wanted to believe that the man standing in front of me was still that boy.

But he wasn't.

He was an adult who had watched his wife humiliate me and then handed her the information she needed to access my financial arrangements.

“Michael, I love you.””

He nodded.

“But I need you to understand something. I will not lie for you. I will not sign anything for you. And I will not pay for anything else on this vacation.””

He looked down.

“Okay.””

“Do you understand?””

“Yes.””

I took a breath.

“Now tell me something. Why did Vanessa want her mother to replace me?””

He hesitated.

Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

“Because she had a plan.””

“What plan?””

He unlocked his phone.

“I found something yesterday.””

He opened a conversation.

It was between Vanessa and her mother.

The messages dated back almost two weeks.

He handed me the phone.

I read the first few lines.

*Vanessa:* Once Carol gets here, we need to make the room situation look different.

*Linda:* What do you mean?

*Vanessa:* I don't want her listed on anything important. It should look like Michael and I arranged the whole trip.

*Linda:* But didn't she pay?

*Vanessa:* That's not the point. She offered. We don't need everyone knowing.

I scrolled further.

*Linda:* What if she asks questions?

*Vanessa:* She won't. Michael will handle her.

My hands went cold.

Then I reached the final message.

*Vanessa:* Once the reservation is transferred, we can deal with the rest. I don't want Carol having access to anything connected to the anniversary package.

I looked at Michael.

“What does she mean by the rest?””

He shook his head.

“I don't know.””

But as I continued scrolling, I found a message from Linda that made my stomach drop.

*Linda:* Are you sure this is the right time to do it?

Vanessa's response was short.

*Vanessa:* It has to happen before the anniversary dinner. After that, she'll never be able to prove what was agreed.

I looked up.

“Michael, what exactly was supposed to happen after the anniversary dinner?””

He took the phone back.

His face had gone pale.

“Mom, I think there's something else you need to know.””

“What?””

He looked toward the hallway.

Then he lowered his voice.

“The anniversary dinner isn't just a dinner.””

I felt my heart begin to pound.

“What are you talking about?””

He swallowed.

“Vanessa invited someone to join us.””

“Who?””

He stared at me.

May you like

“Her attorney.””

And suddenly, the vacation I had paid for seemed to have become something far more dangerous than a family argument over money.
