Chapter 5: The Secret Behind The Verdict
Lauren Whitmore didn’t speak.
That scared me more than if she had started explaining immediately.
People who were innocent usually rushed to defend themselves.
They denied.
They argued.
They demanded to know why someone would accuse them.
Lauren just stood there, staring at the message on my phone.
Like she had been waiting years for those words to appear.
I lowered the phone.
“Why?””
Her eyes moved to mine.
“Emily…”
“No.””
My voice was sharper than I intended.
“You don’t get to avoid this anymore.””
Daniel looked between us.
“Emily, now isn’t the time.””
I turned toward him.
“That’s exactly when people like you always say that.””
His expression changed.
I continued.
“When things get dangerous, everyone tells me to wait. To trust them. To stay away.””
I pointed at the documents on the table.
“But every time I listen, someone else controls the story.””
Lauren looked down.
“You’re right.””
The answer surprised me.
She took a slow breath.
“I owe you the truth.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Lauren.””
She ignored him.
“Victor Hale didn’t go to prison because we finally defeated him.””
She paused.
“He went to prison because he wanted to.””
The room became silent.
I stared at her.
“That’s impossible.””
“I thought so too.””
She walked to the table and picked up one of the files.
“When the investigation started, Victor knew exactly what was happening.””
She opened the folder.
“He knew the charges. He knew the evidence. He knew who was talking.””
Daniel added quietly:
“He was always two steps ahead.””
I looked at Lauren.
“So why let himself get convicted?””
She placed the file down.
“Because prison protected him.””
I frowned.
“Protected him?””
Lauren nodded.
“Outside, people watched his money. His company. His public image.””
She looked at me.
“But inside prison, he could disappear.””
I felt a cold sensation.
“He planned this.””
“Yes.””
“For what?””
Lauren hesitated.
Then answered:
“To remove everyone who could expose him.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Marcus?””
Daniel nodded.
“Marcus found the financial network.””
“Then Victor made him disappear.””
“Yes.””
I looked back at Lauren.
“And you?””
Her face changed.
“I was supposed to be next.””
The room went quiet.
I sat down slowly.
“Explain.””
Lauren looked exhausted.
“Before the trial, I discovered something strange.””
She picked up another document.
“The evidence Victor gave us was real.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“The fraud existed.””
I stared at her.
“But…”
“But it wasn’t everything.””
She tapped the paper.
“The illegal contracts, the fake companies, the hidden money…”
She looked at me.
“That was the smallest part.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Then what was the bigger part?””
Lauren didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she opened another file.
Inside was a list.
Names.
Dates.
Amounts.
My eyes moved down the page.
Executives.
Officials.
Judges.
Lawyers.
Then I saw something that made me freeze.
My own name.
Emily Carter.
I stood up.
“Why is my name here?””
Daniel looked shocked.
Lauren’s expression changed.
“I didn’t know.””
I grabbed the paper.
The entry next to my name was short.
*Potential legal representative.*
Below it:
*Monitor. Evaluate loyalty.*
My hands tightened around the page.
“He was watching me before he hired me.””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody needed to.
Victor didn’t randomly choose me.
He selected me.
I thought back to our first meeting.
The way he studied my office.
The way he asked about my previous cases.
The way he smiled when I said I believed everyone deserved a defense.
He wasn’t looking for a lawyer.
He was looking for someone.
But why?
Daniel spoke quietly.
“Emily, there’s something else.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He hesitated.
Then reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this in my house before we left.””
My heart sank.
“Why didn’t you show me?””
“Because I wasn’t sure what it meant.””
He handed it to me.
Inside was a photograph.
A younger Victor Hale.
Standing beside someone.
Someone I recognized.
I stared.
“No.””
Lauren stepped closer.
“Who is that?””
My fingers trembled.
“That’s my father.””
The room froze.
I looked at the picture again.
My father had died when I was twenty-one.
He had always been a quiet man.
An accountant.
Someone who never talked about his work.
Someone who always told me:
“Emily, numbers remember everything. People don’t.””
I turned the photo over.
There was writing on the back.
*The first person who tried to expose Victor Hale.*
I felt like the air disappeared.
“My father knew him?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Apparently.””
I sat down.
All these years, I thought my father’s death was an accident.
A heart attack.
A tragedy.
But now another possibility appeared.
One I didn’t want to consider.
Lauren noticed my expression.
“Emily…”
I looked at her.
“My father died suddenly.””
She didn’t speak.
“Everyone said it was natural.””
Daniel looked away.
That told me enough.
“Daniel.””
He closed his eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
My voice became quiet.
“What do you know?””
He looked at me.
“Your father wasn’t just an accountant.””
My heartbeat increased.
“He worked as a financial analyst for one of Victor’s early companies.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
“He discovered irregular payments.””
I looked at the picture.
“And he tried to expose him.””
Daniel nodded.
“He was the first person who found the pattern.””
Everything suddenly connected.
The hidden payments.
The fake companies.
The missing employees.
My father.
Victor Hale.
My entire career.
It wasn’t a coincidence.
It was a chain.
A chain that started before I even became a lawyer.
My phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
Nobody moved.
Lauren whispered:
“Don’t answer.””
I stared at the screen.
The call continued.
Then a voicemail appeared.
I pressed play.
A man’s voice filled the room.
Victor Hale.
“Emily.””
My blood went cold.
“I always knew you were smarter than most people.””
A pause.
“But I didn’t think you would be foolish enough to follow your father’s footsteps.””
I looked at Daniel.
The message continued.
“You want the truth?””
Victor laughed softly.
“Then ask yourself why your father died before he could reveal it.””
My breathing stopped.
Then his final words came.
“The truth you’re looking for isn’t hidden from you, Emily.””
A pause.
“It was hidden inside you.””
The voicemail ended.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Lauren.
“What does that mean?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel did.
And his face looked terrified.
“Emily…”
He slowly opened another document.
A document I had never seen before.
A document containing my father’s final investigation notes.
At the top was a sentence written by his own hand.
*If anything happens to me, my daughter must never become a lawyer.*
I stared at the words.
My father wasn’t warning the world.
He was warning me.
And underneath that sentence was another line.
A name.
The person my father believed was responsible for everything.
May you like
The person who had been hiding in plain sight for years.
The person standing only a few feet away from me.
