Chapter 9: The Family Secret That Started It All
My mother’s name stayed on the screen.
I stared at it.
Waiting for something to change.
Waiting for the letters to rearrange into something else.
Anything else.
But they didn’t.
*Margaret Carter.*
My mother.
The woman who held my hand at my father’s funeral.
The woman who told me every night that my father loved me.
The woman who cried beside me when we lost him.
The woman who always said:
“Your father was the best man I ever knew.””
I slowly stepped away from the laptop.
“No.””
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Thomas.
“You knew?””
His face showed pain.
“I suspected.””
My voice rose.
“You suspected my mother was involved?””
Thomas looked down.
“I didn’t have proof.””
I turned toward Lauren.
“What about you?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Daniel remained silent.
And that silence made me look at him.
“You knew.””
He didn’t answer.
My chest tightened.
“Daniel.””
He finally looked at me.
“I knew your mother was connected to Victor.””
The room went quiet.
“How long?””
“Years.””
The anger came instantly.
“You knew this entire time?””
“I knew she had information.””
“You knew my father died because of this.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“I knew your father was afraid of her.””
The words hit harder than anything else.
My own mother.
The person who raised me.
The person who protected me.
The person my father trusted.
I looked back at the screen.
The video continued.
My father’s voice filled the room again.
“Emily, if your mother is involved, understand something.””
I moved closer.
“She was not always this person.””
That sentence confused me.
My father continued.
“When Margaret and I married, she was the person who helped me fight corruption.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Your mother and father were partners before they were enemies.””
I stared at him.
“That makes no sense.””
Thomas nodded.
“I know.””
The video continued.
“Margaret discovered Victor Hale before I did.””
My father’s face looked exhausted.
“She found evidence of his first illegal operation.””
I listened.
“She came to me because she wanted to expose him.””
I looked at the screen.
“Then what happened?””
My father paused.
“She changed.””
The word felt heavy.
“She realized Victor wasn’t just making money.””
He leaned closer to the camera.
“He was offering power.””
The room became silent.
My father continued.
“Margaret started believing that destroying Victor would only replace one powerful person with another.””
I frowned.
“She joined him?””
Thomas answered quietly.
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“How?””
He looked away.
“Your mother believed she could control Victor.””
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“Everyone thought they could control him.””
Nobody disagreed.
The video showed my father opening a document.
“This is the final transaction.””
He held it toward the camera.
“The payment that connects Victor to the person above him.””
I leaned forward.
But the image became blurry.
The file had been damaged.
Only part of the document was visible.
A signature.
A date.
And one sentence.
*Approved by M.C.*
My heart sank.
Margaret Carter.
My mother.
The video ended.
The room stayed silent.
Then Daniel spoke.
“There’s something else.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He opened another file from the flash drive.
A recording.
A conversation.
My father’s voice.
And my mother’s.
I pressed play.
The audio was old and distorted.
But clear enough.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing, Margaret.””
My father sounded angry.
My mother responded calmly.
“I understand exactly what I’m doing.””
“You’re working with Victor.””
“I’m working with reality.””
A pause.
“You think exposing him will fix the world?””
“Yes.””
“No.””
My mother’s voice became colder.
“People like Victor don’t disappear. They get replaced.””
My father said something I couldn’t hear.
Then my mother answered.
“I’m protecting Emily.””
I froze.
My father’s voice became louder.
“By becoming the thing we were fighting?””
Silence.
Then my mother said:
“Sometimes you have to become dangerous to survive.””
The recording ended.
I sat down.
My hands felt numb.
“She wasn’t protecting me.””
Thomas looked at me.
“She thought she was.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“She chose power.””
Nobody corrected me.
Because they knew.
My mother had crossed a line.
But I still couldn’t understand one thing.
“If she was working with Victor…”
I looked at Daniel.
“Why did Victor attack me?””
Daniel answered quietly.
“Because he thought you were closer to discovering the truth than your mother wanted.””
I frowned.
“My mother was trying to hide it from me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Because your father left the evidence with you.””
I stared.
“With me?””
Daniel nodded.
“Your father knew everyone around him could be compromised.””
My eyes moved to the files.
“So he hid the evidence somewhere nobody would think to look.””
Lauren suddenly stood.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at her.
She stared at the screen.
“The list.””
“What list?””
“The one with the people Victor monitored.””
She grabbed the document.
“Emily’s name wasn’t marked as a target.””
I frowned.
“What?””
She pointed.
“Look.””
I looked closer.
Next to my name was a note.
Not *Monitor.*
Not *Control.*
Something else.
*Protect.*
My breathing slowed.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Your father didn’t hide evidence inside you.””
I looked at him.
“Then where?””
He stared at me.
“He hid it around you.””
I felt confused.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas suddenly spoke.
“Your childhood.””
I turned.
“What?””
“Your father knew Victor would search your house. Your office. Your belongings.””
He looked at me.
“But he knew Victor wouldn’t search memories.””
I felt a strange realization forming.
My father.
His habits.
His lessons.
His strange comments when I was younger.
“Numbers remember everything.””
I whispered the words.
Thomas looked at me.
“What?””
I stood up.
“My father used to say that.””
Daniel frowned.
“Say what?””
“Numbers remember everything.””
I walked toward the desk.
“When I was a child, he taught me accounting games.””
I started thinking.
“He would hide information inside ordinary things.””
Lauren looked confused.
“Like what?””
I looked at the files.
“Things only I would recognize.””
Suddenly, my phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Unknown number.
Again.
This time, I answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then a woman’s voice came through.
A voice I knew better than anyone.
“Emily.””
My blood ran cold.
“Mom?””
A long silence.
Then my mother spoke.
“I know you found your father’s files.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“How?””
Her voice was calm.
“Because I was the one who wanted you to find them.””
Everyone looked at me.
I put the phone on speaker.
Thomas whispered:
“No.””
My mother continued.
“You think I’m the villain.””
I said nothing.
“But you don’t know what your father discovered.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What are you talking about?””
Her voice lowered.
“Victor Hale wasn’t the person who killed your father’s investigation.””
A pause.
“He was trying to stop the same person I was.””
I looked at Daniel.
At Lauren.
At Thomas.
My mother continued.
“Emily, you need to listen carefully.””
The fear in her voice was real.
“The person controlling Victor Hale…”
A pause.
“The person who started this entire operation…”
Another pause.
“Is someone who has been protecting you since the day your father died.””
The call suddenly ended.
Nobody moved.
Then Daniel slowly looked toward the door.
His face turned pale.
Because at that exact moment…
May you like
Someone unlocked the safe house entrance.
And the person who walked inside was the last person any of us expected to see.
