Chapter 4: The Lie Beneath the Family

I spent the next day trying to understand one thing.

What did my brother steal?

And why was my daughter involved?

My mother came to the hospital after I called her.

She looked older than she had two days earlier.

“Karen…”

“Mom, what money was Maya talking about?””

Her face changed.

That was my answer.

“You knew.””

She sat down slowly.

“I didn’t want you involved.””

“Mom.””

She looked at the floor.

“After Dad died, there was an insurance payment.””

I stared.

“How much?””

“Almost eighty thousand dollars.””

My chest tightened.

“Where did it go?””

She didn’t answer.

I already knew.

“Derek.””

She nodded.

“He said he needed it for his business.””

“And you let him?””

“I thought he would pay it back.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You thought?””

She covered her face.

“He promised.””

A knock interrupted us.

A police officer stood outside.

“Mrs. Miller?””

My heart stopped.

“Yes?””

“We need to ask about the incident at the barbecue.””

Derek had already started protecting himself.

But what he didn’t know was that Maya had left behind something.

A clue.

The officer handed me a small plastic bag.

Inside was a broken smartwatch.

“Maya’s?””

I nodded.

“It was recovered near the pool.””

“Why are you showing me?””

The officer looked serious.

“Because it may contain information.””

That night, we recovered the watch data.

And what we found changed everything.

Maya’s watch had recorded the moments before the fall.

Not video.

Audio.

The room was silent as we listened.

Derek’s voice.

“Maya, get the burger.””

Her voice.

“I said no.””

Then his.

“Don’t walk away from me.””

Then my scream.

Then the sound.

Everyone heard it.

The push.

The impact.

Nobody could pretend anymore.

But the recording continued.

And that was what terrified me.

After Maya fell.

After everyone screamed.

Derek whispered something.

Something no one had heard at the barbecue.

The detective replayed it.

Again.

And again.

Finally, he looked at me.

“Do you know what this means?””

I nodded slowly.

Because I did.

Derek hadn’t just lost control.

He had known exactly what he was doing.

The detective lowered the volume.

“Your brother said something after the fall.””

My voice shook.

“What?””

He pressed play.

Derek’s voice came through.

Quiet.

Cold.

“She better not ruin my life over this.””

I closed my eyes.

The last piece fell into place.

The next morning, Derek was arrested.

But before he was taken away, he asked to see me.

I almost refused.

Almost.

But I wanted to hear him.

He sat across from me in the station.

“You’re really doing this?””

I stared at him.

“You hurt my daughter.””

“I made a mistake.””

“No.””

He looked angry.

“You’re destroying this family.””

I leaned forward.

“No, Derek.””

My voice was calm.

“You did that when you decided your pride mattered more than a child.””

For once, he had nothing to say.

Then he smiled.

A small, disturbing smile.

“You think you know everything.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

He stood as the officer approached.

“You should ask Maya what she really saw.””

My heart sank.

Because I knew.

May you like

He wasn’t finished.

And neither was the truth.
