Chapter 7

Robert almost went.

That was the frightening part.

After everything.

The theft.

The lies.

The life insurance.

The plan to kill his son and frame me.

One sob from Margaret still pulled him toward the door.

Daniel held his arm.

“Dad, look at me.”

Robert’s eyes were wild.

“She might die.”

“Or she might be setting you up.”

“She is your mother.”

“She planned my accident.”

Robert flinched.

Margaret kept crying through the hotel phone.

“Robert? Are you there? I’m so sleepy.”

I took the receiver from Daniel and put it on speaker.

“Margaret, we are calling 911.”

The crying stopped for half a second.

Then returned louder.

“No! No police. Please. Robert, I need you. Only you.”

Daniel looked at Agent Harris.

He nodded.

I kept my voice calm.

“If you took pills, emergency services can help you.”

“You evil woman,” Margaret hissed.

There she was.

The real Margaret.

The one beneath the tears.

Then she sobbed again.

“Robert, she wants me dead.”

Robert covered his ears.

Daniel took the phone.

“Mom, if this is real, help is coming.”

“Daniel,” she whispered. “My baby.”

He closed his eyes.

“No.”

“You used to love me.”

“I did.”

“Then come home.”

“No.”

Silence.

Then her voice turned flat.

“Tyler was right. Claire ruined you.”

Daniel hung up.

His hand shook afterward.

But he did not call back.

Emergency services went to Margaret’s house.

She was not dying.

She had not taken pills.

There was no pill bottle.

No medical emergency.

But police found something else.

A suitcase by the back door.

Cash.

Fake IDs.

Robert’s passport.

And a folder labeled MEDICAL AUTHORIZATION.

Inside were documents giving Margaret authority to make health decisions for Robert.

His signature was forged.

So was Daniel’s as witness.

Robert sat down when he heard.

“She was going to take me?”

Agent Harris’s jaw tightened.

“Or make it look like you agreed to leave.”

“Why?”

Detective Brooks answered carefully.

“If Robert disappeared or became incapacitated, Margaret could control remaining assets, destroy witnesses, and claim stress or illness.”

Robert whispered, “I was next.”

Daniel knelt in front of him.

“Yes.”

Robert looked at him like a man waking from a nightmare.

“She cried, and I almost went.”

“But you didn’t,” Daniel said.

Robert broke down.

“I almost did.”

“But you didn’t.”

That was the first time Daniel comforted his father without excusing him.

It was also the first time Robert accepted comfort without hiding behind shame.

Margaret was detained for filing a false emergency report and questioned again.

Still, she refused to confess.

She claimed Daniel and I had turned Robert against her.

She claimed Tyler had addiction problems and everyone was punishing her for being a loving mother.

She claimed Eric was helping with paperwork because the family was “disorganized.”

She claimed the binder was fake.

But the evidence kept growing.

Eric was finally arrested two days later at a motel near the interstate.

He had my hard drive.

He had copies of Daniel’s ID.

He had a burner phone with messages from Margaret.

He also had ten thousand dollars in cash.

At first, Eric refused to talk.

Then Agent Harris told him the forged notarizations were enough to end his career and maybe send him to prison for years.

Eric asked for a lawyer.

Then he asked if cooperation would matter.

It did.

By evening, he gave them Tyler’s location.

An abandoned repair garage outside town.

Police raided it after midnight.

Tyler was not there.

But they found tools.

Brake fluid.

Insurance forms.

A list of our routines.

Daniel’s work schedule.

My office schedule.

Robert’s medication list.

And a photograph of our hotel entrance.

Taken that afternoon.

We moved again.

This time to a safe house arranged by federal agents.

I felt like my life had been folded into emergency bags and locked doors.

Daniel tried to stay strong.

But that night, I found him in the bathroom, sitting on the closed toilet lid, crying silently.

I knelt in front of him.

He covered his face.

“My mother wants my money more than my life.”

I wrapped my arms around him.

He held on like a drowning man.

“I’m here,” I whispered.

He shook his head.

“She almost killed you because of me.”

“No. Because of her.”

He cried harder.

“I don’t know how to be someone’s son anymore.”

That broke me.

“You can be Robert’s son. You can be your own man. You do not have to be hers.”

He looked at me.

For the first time, he seemed to believe it might be true.

The next morning, Detective Brooks arrived with the recovered hard drive.

“Eric did not wipe it in time,” she said.

She connected it to my laptop.

Several deleted clips had been restored.

One was from Margaret’s kitchen.

Recorded two weeks before the soup dinner.

Margaret stood with Tyler by the sink.

Tyler asked, “What if Daniel doesn’t sign?”

Margaret replied, “Then Claire becomes the problem first.”

Tyler laughed.

“And if she won’t scare?”

May you like

Margaret turned toward the camera without knowing it was there.

“Then we make Daniel a widower.”
