Chapter 10

Everything went wrong at once.
Agent Harris cursed.
Detective Brooks grabbed her radio.
“How is Margaret out?”
No one had an answer.
Outside, Daniel turned toward his mother.
Tyler looked confused.
“Mom?”
Margaret walked toward him with both hands raised like she was approaching a frightened child.
“My baby,” she said. “I came for you.”
Daniel stepped between them.
“Stay back.”
Margaret’s eyes moved to him.
“My brave Daniel. Always trying to control everyone.”
“You need to stop.”
“I tried to save this family.”
“You tried to kill my wife.”
Margaret’s face hardened.
“She divided us.”
“No,” Daniel said. “You did.”
For once, he did not sound broken.
He sounded certain.
Tyler looked between them, knife shaking.
“Mom, what do I do?”
Margaret’s voice softened.
“You give me the bag.”
“Mom—”
“Give it to me.”
Tyler obeyed.
Even now.
Even here.
With police hidden around him and Eric tied inside the building.
He still obeyed her.
Margaret opened the duffel bag and checked the stacks.
Her smile faded.
“This isn’t money.”
Daniel did not move.
“No.”
She looked up slowly.
“You brought police.”
Officers emerged.
“Margaret Hayes, hands where we can see them!”
Tyler panicked.
He grabbed Daniel from behind and pressed the knife near his side.
I screamed inside the van.
Robert lurched forward.
Agent Harris held him back.
Margaret’s eyes flashed.
“Tyler, no.”
But not because she cared about Daniel.
Because Tyler had ruined her performance.
Now everyone could see.
Daniel kept his voice steady.
“Tyler. Let go.”
Tyler was crying now.
“I can’t go to prison.”
“You hurt people.”
“I didn’t mean for it to go this far.”
“You cut Claire’s brakes.”
“Mom said it would scare her!”
Margaret snapped, “Shut up.”
Tyler flinched.
Daniel heard it.
So did every recording device.
“Mom said?” Daniel asked.
Tyler sobbed.
“She said if Claire crashed but lived, she’d stop interfering. She said if it went bad, we’d use the policy.”
Margaret’s mask fell completely.
“You idiot.”
The officers tightened their circle.
Detective Brooks shouted, “Drop the knife!”
Tyler shook his head violently.
“I can’t!”
Daniel looked over his shoulder at him.
“Yes, you can.”
Margaret hissed, “Tyler, don’t you dare.”
Daniel’s voice stayed calm.
“For once, do not listen to her.”
Tyler sobbed harder.
“She’s all I have.”
“No,” Daniel said. “She is why you have nothing.”
That sentence cut through him.
Tyler loosened his grip for half a second.
Daniel moved.
Fast.
He shoved Tyler’s knife hand outward and stepped away.
Officers rushed in.
Tyler dropped the knife and collapsed to his knees.
Margaret turned to run.
Detective Brooks tackled her before she reached the car.
Margaret screamed.
Not like a victim.
Like a furious queen dragged from a throne.
“It was Claire!” she shrieked. “She poisoned them against me!”
I jumped out of the van before Agent Harris could stop me.
Daniel turned when he saw me.
His face went pale.
“Claire, stay back.”
But Margaret had already seen me.
She smiled from the ground, wrists pinned behind her.
“You think you won?”
I looked at her.
“No.”
Her smile widened.
“Good. Because you didn’t.”
Inside the cannery, officers found Eric alive.
Bruised.
Terrified.
Ready to talk.
He told investigators Margaret bribed a jail transport clerk to delay paperwork and create a medical release confusion.
She had walked out during the chaos.
The clerk was arrested before dawn.
Eric also admitted something new.
The Daniel Accident Timeline was not Margaret’s first plan.
There had been another insurance policy.
Years earlier.
On Robert.
Daniel went silent when he heard.
Robert looked like he might faint.
Agent Harris pulled the old records.
A policy taken out fifteen years ago.
Beneficiary: Margaret Hayes.
It had lapsed.
But the application included forged medical information and one strange note.
Claim delayed due to “failed opportunity.”
Robert stared at the words.
“Failed opportunity?”
Eric broke under questioning.
He said Tyler had once tampered with Robert’s blood pressure medication during a family trip.
Margaret stopped him at the last minute.
Not out of love.
Because the payout was too low.
Robert vomited into a trash can.
Daniel stood beside him, one hand on his back, his own face full of horror.
The next morning, Margaret, Tyler, and Eric were all in custody.
But the case was still not over.
At sunrise, Detective Brooks came to the safe house with another folder.
“We reviewed Margaret’s phone,” she said.
Daniel looked exhausted.
“What now?”
The detective’s face softened.
“There are messages about your father.”
Robert looked up.
“What messages?”
Detective Brooks placed a printed text on the table.
Margaret to Tyler.
If Robert talks, remind him what happened to your sister.
Daniel froze.
“Sister?”
May you like
Robert’s face went white.
Then he whispered, “Oh God.”
