Chapter 8: The Friend Who Knew Too Much

The name on the paper stared back at us.

I expected it to be someone powerful.

Someone dangerous.

Someone who had been hiding in the shadows.

But I never expected it to be someone who had been sitting at our dinner table.

Someone who had held my newborn daughter.

Someone who had smiled at me while secretly knowing pieces of my life I never understood.

Rachel whispered the name.

“Lauren.””

Her voice was barely audible.

The courtroom went quiet.

I looked at her.

“Lauren?””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“My best friend.””

The words felt unreal.

“Your best friend?””

“Yes.””

The judge looked at Daniel.

“Mr. Hart, explain the connection.””

Daniel opened the folder.

“Lauren Brooks was Rachel’s closest friend during her pregnancy and after Emma was born.””

I looked at Rachel.

I remembered Lauren.

Of course I did.

She was always around.

At the hospital.

At our apartment.

At Emma’s first birthday.

She brought gifts.

She took pictures.

She called herself Emma’s second mother.

And I trusted her.

“Why would she be involved?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at the documents.

“Because she had access.””

“To what?””

“Information.””

“That’s not enough.””

Daniel nodded.

“Your father believed Lauren knew details about the trust, Emma’s inheritance, and the custody agreement.””

Rachel shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“She couldn’t have.””

The judge raised an eyebrow.

“Mrs. Miller, why are you so certain?””

Rachel looked down.

“Because Lauren was the person who helped me survive after Emma was born.””

A painful silence followed.

Rachel continued.

“I was alone. Michael and I were constantly fighting. I was exhausted. I didn’t know what to do.””

She looked at me.

“I know you think I hated you.””

I didn’t answer.

“But I was scared too.””

Her voice softened.

“Lauren was the only person who listened.””

I looked at the documents.

“And that made you trust her.””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel turned a page.

“That trust is exactly why your father became suspicious.””

Rachel looked at him.

“What?””

“Because Lauren knew things she shouldn’t have known.””

The judge looked interested.

“Such as?””

Daniel pointed to the records.

“Before the trust documents were finalized, Lauren contacted Victor Hale.””

Rachel froze.

“When?””

“Three weeks before Emma was born.””

My eyes narrowed.

“How would she even know about the trust?””

Daniel looked at Rachel.

“That’s what your father wanted to find out.””

Rachel’s face changed.

Then suddenly she looked sick.

“No…”

I turned toward her.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Rachel.””

She looked at me.

“I told Lauren.””

The words landed heavily.

“You told her?””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

“About the trust?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Rachel swallowed.

“When your father came to the hospital…”

She stopped.

The memories seemed painful.

“He told me Emma would be financially protected.””

My chest tightened.

“And you told Lauren?””

“I was scared.””

Rachel looked at me.

“I thought she was my friend.””

The judge asked:

“Mrs. Miller, did Lauren ever ask questions about the inheritance?””

Rachel hesitated.

That hesitation answered before she spoke.

“Yes.””

“What kind of questions?””

Rachel looked ashamed.

“She asked how much Emma would receive.””

The courtroom went silent.

I felt anger rising.

“And you didn’t think that was strange?””

“At the time, no.””

“Why?””

“Because she said she was worried about Emma’s future.””

I looked away.

Everyone had an explanation.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone claimed they were protecting Emma.

Daniel placed another document on the table.

“This is a message from Lauren to Victor.””

Rachel’s face turned pale.

“I never saw that.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

The judge read it.

Then her expression hardened.

“What does it say?””

Daniel answered.

“‘The father is still a problem. Rachel is emotional, but she will listen if pressured correctly.’”

My blood ran cold.

Rachel covered her mouth.

“No.””

Daniel continued.

“‘The child is the only leverage we have.’”

Emma gasped.

I immediately turned toward her.

She looked devastated.

Not because of the money.

Because she was finally realizing adults had treated her life like a battlefield.

I reached for her hand.

This time, she let me.

The judge looked at Rachel.

“Mrs. Miller, did Lauren ever suggest keeping Mr. Miller away from Emma?””

Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

“Explain.””

Rachel looked at me.

“I thought she was just trying to help.””

“Mrs. Miller.””

“She told me Michael was unstable.””

My jaw tightened.

“I wasn’t.””

“I know that now.””

“You believed her?””

Rachel looked down.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

Not because I expected Rachel to defend me.

Because I realized someone else had been shaping how she saw me.

For years.

Daniel continued.

“There’s more.””

Everyone looked at him.

He removed another piece of paper.

“This is a bank record.””

Rachel looked confused.

“What does that have to do with Lauren?””

Daniel placed it in front of the judge.

The judge read it.

Then looked up.

“Mrs. Miller?””

Rachel’s face went blank.

“What?””

“Did you receive money from Lauren Brooks?””

The room exploded into whispers.

Rachel stood.

“What?””

The judge turned the document.

“A transfer of fifteen thousand dollars.””

Rachel stared.

“I never received money from her.””

Daniel spoke calmly.

“The account was not yours.””

Everyone waited.

“Whose was it?””

Daniel looked at me.

Then at Rachel.

“It was an account opened in Emma’s name.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

Rachel looked horrified.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He pointed at the record.

“The account was created shortly after Emma was born.””

Rachel looked at me.

“I didn’t do this.””

“I didn’t say you did.””

“But you think I did.””

“I don’t know what to think anymore.””

That sentence hurt both of us.

Because it was true.

The judge looked at Daniel.

“Where did the money come from?””

Daniel answered:

“Lauren Brooks.””

A cold silence followed.

“Why would she put money into Emma’s account?””

Daniel looked at the documents.

“Because she wanted access.””

“To what?””

“To Emma’s trust.””

The judge frowned.

“How?””

Daniel explained.

“Someone who contributes financially can sometimes attempt to create legal arguments about involvement and interest in certain situations.””

Rachel shook her head.

“That makes no sense.””

“It does if she planned ahead.””

I looked at Rachel.

“Did Lauren ever talk about becoming part of Emma’s life permanently?””

Rachel froze.

That reaction was enough.

“Rachel?””

She whispered:

“Yes.””

“When?””

“After our divorce.””

My chest tightened.

“What did she say?””

Rachel looked embarrassed.

“She said Emma needed another stable person.””

I stared at her.

“Another person?””

Rachel nodded.

“She suggested that she could help raise Emma.””

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at me.

“Your father suspected Lauren wanted to replace you.””

I felt a wave of anger.

“She wanted my daughter.””

Rachel started crying.

“I didn’t know.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“You didn’t.””

Emma squeezed my hand.

“Dad…”

I looked at her.

“I’m okay.””

But I wasn’t.

Not completely.

Because the person who hurt me most wasn’t a stranger.

It was the realization that while I was fighting to stay in my daughter’s life, someone else had been trying to take my place.

The judge looked at Daniel.

“Where is Lauren Brooks now?””

Daniel hesitated.

That worried me.

“She left the state two years ago.””

“Do you know where she is?””

“No.””

“Any contact with Mrs. Miller?””

Daniel looked at the records.

“Yes.””

Rachel looked up.

“What?””

“There was one message.””

“When?””

Daniel turned the page.

“Yesterday.””

Rachel went pale.

“What did it say?””

Daniel looked at her.

Then read:

“‘You should have listened. Now Michael knows everything.’”

A chill moved through me.

Rachel whispered:

“She knew about today.””

The judge looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

Rachel stared at the message.

“She knew the custody hearing would reveal everything.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my phone vibrated.

Everyone turned.

The judge looked at me.

“Mr. Miller, silence your phone.””

I looked down.

Unknown number.

One new message.

My hands went cold.

Because the message contained a picture.

A picture taken outside the courthouse.

A picture of Emma.

Standing beside me.

And underneath it were six words.

“Now you know who is watching.””

I looked up.

The courtroom doors were closed.

May you like

But suddenly, I felt like someone was standing right outside them.

Waiting.
