Chapter 6: The Person Who Wanted Me Gone

The courtroom did not feel like a courtroom anymore.

It felt like the final room in a mystery I never knew I was part of.

For thirteen years, I had believed my life fell apart because of one thing.

A failed marriage.

A bitter divorce.

Two people who couldn’t stop hurting each other.

But now I was sitting there, listening to my dead father’s voice, realizing there might have been something much bigger happening behind the scenes.

Someone had wanted me away from Emma.

Someone had hidden documents.

Someone had destroyed evidence.

And I still didn’t know why.

The judge looked at Daniel.

“Mr. Hart, you said your understanding is that someone altered the trust documents. Do you have proof of who did it?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Not yet.””

Rachel let out a quiet breath.

Almost like relief.

But I noticed.

And so did the judge.

“Mrs. Miller,” the judge said, “your reaction suggests you may know more than you have shared.””

Rachel looked down.

“I don’t know who changed the documents.””

“But?””

She swallowed.

“But I know someone wanted Michael gone.””

My hands tightened.

“Who?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

“Rachel.””

She looked at me.

For once, there was no anger between us.

Only exhaustion.

“I thought I was protecting Emma.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then tell the truth.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was afraid of your family.””

I frowned.

“My family?””

“Yes.””

“That makes no sense.””

Rachel looked at Daniel.

“You know what happened.””

Daniel’s expression became serious.

“I know what your father suspected.””

“Then explain it.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your father believed someone close to him was trying to gain control of his assets after his death.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

“He didn’t know.””

“Then why would Rachel be afraid?””

Daniel was quiet.

That silence bothered me.

“What?””

He looked toward Rachel.

“Because your father suspected the person was someone she trusted.””

My stomach dropped.

“Someone she trusted?””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“I never wanted to believe it.””

The judge leaned forward.

“Mrs. Miller, we need specifics.””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“When Emma was born, I was overwhelmed.””

Her voice softened.

“I was twenty-six years old. I had a newborn baby. Michael and I were barely speaking.

His father was dying. Everyone around me was fighting.””

She looked at Emma.

“And I was scared.””

Emma watched her carefully.

Rachel continued.

“Someone offered to help me.””

“Who?”” I asked.

She hesitated.

Then said:

“Your father’s business associate.””

Daniel’s face changed slightly.

“Who?””

Rachel looked at him.

“You know who.””

A silence followed.

Then Daniel spoke quietly.

“Victor.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But it clearly meant something to them.

“Who is Victor?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Victor Hale.””

Rachel nodded.

“Your father’s closest advisor.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“My father had an advisor?””

“Yes.””

“Why don’t I know any of this?””

Daniel’s expression was painful.

“Because your father separated his personal life from his business life after your argument.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So everyone knew my father except me.””

Nobody responded.

Because it was true.

The judge looked at Daniel.

“What was Victor Hale’s involvement?””

Daniel folded his hands.

“Victor managed several parts of your father’s estate.””

“And the trust?””

“He helped establish the original trust.””

My heart sank.

“So he had access.””

“Yes.””

Rachel spoke quietly.

“That’s why I was afraid.””

I looked at her.

“You were afraid of him?””

She nodded.

“He knew everything.””

“Everything?””

“About the money. About Emma. About your father’s wishes.””

The judge looked at Rachel.

“Then why did you not report your concerns?””

Rachel’s eyes moved away.

“Because Victor convinced me I was overreacting.””

My voice became cold.

“And you believed him?””

“I was young.””

“You were my wife.””

She flinched.

“I know.””

“You let another man convince you I was dangerous.””

Rachel looked down.

“I was angry at you too.””

That hurt because it was honest.

“I thought you hated me.””

She whispered:

“I thought you hated me.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Emma interrupted.

“Why didn’t you ask Dad?””

Both of us looked at her.

Her face was wet with tears.

“If you were scared…”

She looked at Rachel.

“Why didn’t you just ask him?””

Rachel’s lips trembled.

Because there was no good answer.

“I don’t know.””

Emma looked away.

That hurt more than anger.

Because my daughter wasn’t asking for an excuse.

She was asking why the adults who loved her made choices that hurt her.

Daniel cleared his throat.

“There is something else.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?”” I asked.

He reached into his folder.

“I found a copy of an email exchange between Victor Hale and Rachel.””

Rachel immediately stood.

“No.””

The judge looked at her.

“Mrs. Miller, sit down.””

Rachel slowly lowered herself.

Daniel continued.

“I discovered it while reviewing your father’s old records.””

My heart started pounding.

“What did it say?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“It was from shortly after Emma was born.””

“Read it.””

He hesitated.

Then opened the document.

“The first email is from Victor.””

He looked down.

“‘Rachel, you need to understand. Michael cannot be allowed to have control over the trust.’”

The courtroom went silent.

I stared at Rachel.

She looked horrified.

Daniel continued.

“‘If Michael discovers what his father arranged, everything changes.’”

The judge frowned.

“What was the response?””

Daniel looked at Rachel.

“From Rachel.””

My chest tightened.

“What did she say?””

Daniel read:

“‘I don’t want to hurt him. He is still Emma’s father.’”

I felt a small sense of relief.

Then Daniel continued.

“But Victor responded.””

The relief disappeared.

“‘You don’t understand. If Michael stays involved, the plan fails.’”

My blood ran cold.

“The plan?””

Daniel looked at the page.

“That’s all the message says.””

I looked at Rachel.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Tears rolled down her face.

“Because I was scared.””

“Of Victor?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you keep my daughter away from me?””

She looked at Emma.

“I thought if I followed what he said, he would leave us alone.””

The words hit harder than anything.

“You followed him?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Not completely.””

“But enough.””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

Emma covered her mouth.

“Mom…”

Rachel looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

Emma shook her head.

“I don’t understand.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

Her voice cracked.

“You made me think Dad didn’t care about me.””

Rachel started crying.

“I know.””

“You made me choose.””

“I know.””

“And now you’re telling me someone else made you do it?””

Rachel looked broken.

“I made mistakes.””

For the first time, I believed her.

But believing her didn’t erase thirteen years.

The judge looked at Daniel.

“Where is Victor Hale now?””

Daniel became quiet.

That worried me.

“Mr. Hart?””

“He disappeared.””

The room froze.

“When?””

“Three years ago.””

“Why?””

“After your father’s estate was audited.””

The judge frowned.

“Was he accused of wrongdoing?””

“No formal charges were filed.””

“Then why is he relevant?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because before he disappeared, he sent one final message.””

I felt a chill.

“To who?””

Daniel reached into his folder.

“To Michael Miller.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“I found it in your father’s private records.””

He placed a printed message on the table.

The judge looked at it.

Then her expression changed.

“Mr. Miller…”

She looked at me carefully.

“This message was sent one day after your divorce was finalized.””

I stared.

“One day?””

“Yes.””

My hands began trembling.

“What did it say?””

The judge looked down at the page.

Then she read:

“Michael, if you ever try to take Emma back, I will make sure you lose everything.””

The courtroom went silent.

I felt the air leave my lungs.

Someone had threatened me.

Someone had been watching.

Someone had planned this.

But there was one question I couldn’t stop thinking about.

If Victor Hale wanted me gone…

Why did Rachel help him?

And why did she suddenly decide to tell the truth now?

I looked at my ex-wife.

“Rachel.””

She looked at me.

“Why now?””

Her face changed.

“What?””

“You had thirteen years.””

Silence.

“Why reveal everything today?””

Rachel looked at Emma.

Then at me.

And the fear returned to her eyes.

“Because yesterday…”

She swallowed.

“I received a message.””

My blood ran cold.

“From who?””

Rachel’s hands started shaking.

“I don’t know.””

“What did it say?””

She looked at the judge.

Then at Daniel.

Then finally at me.

And whispered:

“It said…”

She stopped.

May you like

Her voice barely came out.

“‘You failed to keep Michael away. Now I’m coming for Emma.’”
