Chapter 9: The Daughter I Never Knew I Lost

I didn’t understand the words.

Not at first.

They entered my mind, but they didn’t become real.

The third baby was yours.

I looked at Michael.

Then at Claire.

Then through the glass at Emma.

My daughter.

The room around me moved, but I felt frozen.

“No.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

“No, that doesn’t make sense.””

Michael stepped toward me.

“Rachel…”

“Don’t.””

I backed away.

“Don’t say my name like that.””

His face crumpled.

“I know this is impossible.””

“Impossible?””

I laughed once.

A painful, empty sound.

“You’re telling me I had another child?””

He didn’t answer.

“You’re telling me I lost a baby and nobody told me?””

“Rachel…”

“Answer me!””

The hallway went silent.

Michael looked down.

“Yes.””

My knees almost gave out.

Claire reached toward me.

I pulled away.

“Don’t.””

She stopped.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You don’t get to apologize for this.””

Her eyes filled.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice shook.

“You knew there was another baby.””

“Yes.””

“And you knew it was mine?””

Claire looked at Michael.

That was enough.

I turned to him.

“How long?””

He swallowed.

“Rachel…”

“How long have you known?””

“Since Emma was born.””

The answer destroyed me.

Since Emma was born.

Ten years.

Ten years of birthdays.

Ten years of photographs.

Ten years of bedtime stories.

And somewhere in those years was another child.

My child.

A child I never held.

Never named.

Never loved.

Because I never knew.

“Why?””

Michael closed his eyes.

“Because you were unconscious when they discovered it.””

“What did they discover?””

His voice cracked.

“That the third baby had been born during the emergency.””

“During my delivery?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“The baby was transferred to another hospital.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“Because she needed specialized care.””

“And nobody told me?””

He looked broken.

“They thought she might not survive.””

The words cut deeper.

“They thought my baby might die, and nobody told me?””

“I was told they didn’t want to give you information until they knew more.””

“Who?””

“The doctors.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No, Michael.””

I wiped my face.

“You don’t get to put this on doctors.””

His silence told me he knew I was right.

“Who made the decision?””

He looked away.

“Michael.””

Finally, he whispered,

“I did.””

The hallway disappeared.

“You?””

“I thought I was protecting you.””

The anger came back.

“You thought I couldn’t handle losing my own child?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

He looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“I thought if she survived, I would tell you.””

“But she did.””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

His voice became almost impossible to hear.

“Because I found out something.””

“What?””

“That she wasn’t where the records said she was.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Michael looked at Claire.

“She disappeared from the system.””

My heart stopped.

“Disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“Explain.””

He took a shaky breath.

“After she was transferred, the hospital lost communication with the receiving facility.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“Then what happened?””

“They searched.””

“And?””

“They found no matching records.””

I stared.

“My daughter vanished?””

“Yes.””

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

“And you lived with that?””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I searched.””

The anger paused.

Just for a second.

“You searched?””

“For years.””

“Then why did you never tell me?””

“Because every time I got close, I found another dead end.””

I looked at him.

“Show me.””

He reached into his coat pocket.

A small envelope.

Old.

Worn.

He handed it to me.

Inside were documents.

Hospital records.

Photos.

Letters.

My hands trembled as I looked through them.

There was a picture.

A baby.

Tiny.

Wrapped in a pink blanket.

A hospital bracelet around her wrist.

My breath caught.

The bracelet had a name.

Not mine.

Not Emma.

A temporary name.

Baby Girl Johnson.

My fingers covered my mouth.

“That’s her.””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

I stared at the picture.

A stranger.

My child.

The baby I never got to hold.

“What happened to her?””

Michael looked away.

“I don’t know.””

The answer broke me.

I sat down.

For the first time in years, I felt grief for someone I had never met.

A grief that had no memories.

No moments.

Only an empty space.

Claire sat across from me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“When I discovered the third baby existed, I thought she was yours.””

“How?””

“Because my daughter wasn’t the missing baby.””

I looked at her.

“Lily.””

Claire nodded.

“Lily was another child.””

My head spun.

“So Emma…”

Dr. Miller, who had been quietly listening, stepped forward.

“Mrs. Johnson, we need to slow down.””

I looked at him.

“How can I slow down?””

My voice cracked.

“My husband knew I had another daughter.””

I pointed toward Emma’s room.

“And I’m standing here talking about DNA while my child is sick.””

The doctor nodded.

“I understand.””

“No.””

I looked through the glass.

“You don’t.””

But he did something unexpected.

He didn’t argue.

He just said,

“You’re right.””

That broke something in me.

Because for once, someone admitted the impossible.

Dr. Miller opened the file.

“We need to focus on what we know.””

“What do we know?””

“Emma’s genetic condition is real.””

I nodded.

“And?””

“It does not come from the family history we assumed.””

I looked at Claire.

“So she isn’t my daughter?””

Claire’s face fell.

“No.””

The answer hurt.

But she continued.

“We still don’t know.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“Genetic relationships can be complicated.””

Dr. Miller nodded.

“We need more testing.””

“More tests.””

“Yes.””

I laughed softly.

“Another thing we have to wait for.””

A nurse came running.

“Doctor.””

He turned.

“What?””

“We received an outside call.””

“From who?””

The nurse looked at the paper.

“A woman named Lauren Johnson.””

My heart stopped.

My sister.

“What does she want?””

The nurse hesitated.

“She says she knows what happened to the missing baby.””

Nobody spoke.

Michael went pale.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You know what she knows?””

He didn’t answer.

I stood.

“Call her.””

“Rachel…”

“Call her.””

The nurse stepped away.

Seconds later, the phone was connected.

A voice came through the speaker.

Lauren.

My sister.

The woman who held my hand when I gave birth.

The woman who cried when she first saw Emma.

“Rachel?””

My entire body went cold.

“Lauren.””

Silence.

Then:

“I’m sorry.””

I closed my eyes.

Not again.

Not another apology.

“Where is my baby?””

A shaky breath.

“Rachel…”

“Where is she?””

“I should have told you.””

“Where is she?””

Michael looked terrified.

Claire looked confused.

Dr. Miller watched silently.

Finally, Lauren whispered:

“She’s alive.””

My heart stopped.

Alive.

My baby was alive.

“Where?””

Another pause.

Then the words came.

“She’s been with me.””

The world went silent.

I looked at Michael.

He looked away.

And suddenly I understood.

The biggest secret was never that my daughter might not be mine.

May you like

The biggest secret was that someone had been raising my child…

while I was raising someone else’s.
