Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew My Daughter

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood her.

The words were too impossible.

Too cruel.

Too unreal.

“My other mother?””

Emma looked away.

Her fingers tightened around mine.

“Yes.””

I could barely hear my own voice.

“Emma, what do you mean?””

She looked scared.

Not sick.

Not confused.

Scared.

And that frightened me more.

“Sweetheart, who told you that?””

She glanced toward the doorway.

Michael was standing there.

His face had lost all color.

“Dad.””

I turned slowly.

“Michael.””

He didn’t move.

“Rachel…”

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

Almost calm.

That scared me.

“Let our daughter explain.””

Emma looked between us.

“I didn't want to make you sad.””

My heart cracked.

“Baby, you could never make me sad by telling me the truth.””

She swallowed.

“But Dad said it would hurt you.””

I looked at Michael.

“What did you tell her?””

“Not now.””

“Not now?””

My voice rose.

“Our daughter is in a hospital bed telling me she met another woman who thinks she’s her mother, and you’re saying not now?””

Emma flinched.

I immediately softened.

“I'm sorry.””

I brushed her hair away.

“I’m not upset with you.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“How long have you known?””

Emma was quiet.

Too quiet.

“Emma.””

“Two years.””

The number hit harder than I expected.

Two years.

My husband and my daughter had been carrying a secret for two years.

While I packed lunches.

While I helped with homework.

While I kissed her forehead every night.

I had been the only person in my own family who didn’t know.

“Who is she?””

Emma looked at Michael.

He whispered,

“Rachel…”

“No.””

I turned back to my daughter.

“Who is she?””

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“Her name is Claire.””

My heart stopped.

The name meant nothing.

And somehow that made it worse.

“Where did you meet her?””

Emma looked down.

“Dad took me.””

I looked at Michael.

“You took her?””

He closed his eyes.

“I can explain.””

“You better.””

The door opened.

Dr. Miller stepped inside.

“I’m sorry to interrupt.””

I turned.

“Not now.””

“I understand.””

He looked at Emma.

“But her condition is unstable, and we need to avoid stress.””

I almost laughed.

Avoid stress?

My entire world had just collapsed.

But I looked at my daughter.

And I swallowed everything.

“Okay.””

I sat back down.

“Five minutes.””

The doctor nodded.

Then he looked at Michael.

“After that, we need to discuss the treatment plan.””

Michael nodded.

When he left, I whispered,

“Tell me everything.””

Michael pulled a chair closer.

He looked exhausted.

“When Emma was eight, I received a letter.””

“A letter from who?””

“From Claire.””

The name sounded strange coming from his mouth.

“Who is Claire?””

He looked at Emma.

Then back at me.

“The woman whose daughter was born the same night as Emma.””

My stomach tightened.

“Her daughter.””

“Yes.””

“The other baby.””

Michael nodded.

I felt dizzy.

“What did the letter say?””

“She said she had reason to believe there had been a mistake at the hospital.””

“Reason?””

“She had found old records.””

“What records?””

“Blood tests. Hospital notes.””

“And she contacted you?””

“Yes.””

“Not me.””

His silence answered.

“Why not me?””

“Because you were already struggling.””

I stared at him.

“I was struggling?””

“You were exhausted. You were working. Taking care of Emma.””

“So you decided I couldn’t handle the truth?””

“No.””

“That’s exactly what you decided.””

He looked down.

“I was wrong.””

“Yes.””

The answer came immediately.

“You were.””

Emma whispered,

“Mom…”

I looked at her.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice was small.

“Dad was trying to protect me too.””

That sentence hurt.

Because my ten-year-old daughter was defending the man who had hidden the biggest secret of our lives.

“What did Claire tell you?””

Emma hesitated.

“She said she was my first mom.””

My eyes burned.

“First mom?””

“She said she gave birth to me.””

I looked at Michael.

“Did you let this woman tell our daughter that?””

“No.””

“Then what did you let happen?””

Michael looked ashamed.

“I met Claire first.””

“When?””

“After the letter.””

“And?””

“She showed me documents.””

“What kind?””

“Records that suggested the babies may have been switched.””

I stared at him.

“And you brought Emma to meet her?””

“I wanted to know the truth.””

“You could have done a DNA test.””

“I did.””

The room became silent.

I looked at him.

“You did?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

His face changed.

“It was complicated.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means the results were not clear.””

I frowned.

“DNA results are clear.””

“Not always.””

“Michael.””

He looked at me.

“The samples were damaged.””

I almost laughed.

“Convenient.””

“Rachel.””

“No.””

I stood.

“I need to understand something.””

My voice shook.

“You met another woman. You suspected she might be Emma’s biological mother. You took my daughter to see her.

You did a test. And you told me nothing.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked toward Emma.

“Because Claire was sick.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She had a serious illness.””

“What does that have to do with anything?””

“She was dying.””

The anger inside me paused.

Just for a second.

“What?””

“She wanted to meet the daughter she believed she lost.””

I looked at Emma.

My daughter was watching us with tears on her face.

“She said she didn't want anything from us.””

Michael continued.

“She only wanted to know if Emma was okay.””

“And you believed her?””

“At first, no.””

“Then?””

He swallowed.

“Then I saw them together.””

I hated that sentence.

Because I understood.

Some things were impossible to fake.

“Emma knew?””

“Yes.””

“How many times?””

“Three.””

My heart broke.

Three times.

Three meetings.

Three moments stolen from me.

“Where?””

“Public places.””

“Did Claire know where we lived?””

“No.””

“Did she know me?””

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“She had seen pictures.””

“From where?””

Michael looked away.

And I knew.

“Your social media.””

My chest tightened.

“You gave her access to my life.””

“No.””

“You let a stranger know my daughter.””

“She wasn't a stranger.””

“She was to me.””

The monitor beside Emma began beeping faster.

A nurse appeared immediately.

“Everyone needs to lower their voices.””

We stepped back.

Emma looked exhausted.

“I’m sorry.””

I rushed to her.

“No, baby.””

She whispered,

“I didn't want to hurt you.””

“You didn't.””

“But Claire said you were her mom too.””

The words stunned me.

“She said that?””

Emma nodded.

“She said two mothers can love one child.””

I looked at my daughter.

And for the first time since entering that hospital, my anger disappeared.

Because Emma wasn’t the person who betrayed me.

She was the child caught in the middle.

I kissed her hand.

“You should have told me.””

“I was scared.””

“I know.””

“She said if I told you, everyone would fight.””

My eyes moved to Michael.

He looked away.

I whispered,

“Claire told you that?””

Emma nodded.

“She said Dad was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Emma’s eyes closed.

“She said…”

Her breathing became shallow.

I leaned closer.

“What did she say?””

Emma opened her eyes.

“She said Dad knew the truth.””

A chill went through me.

“What truth?””

The monitor beeped again.

The nurse rushed in.

“Doctor!””

Within seconds, the room filled with people.

I was pushed backward.

Michael grabbed my shoulder.

But I didn’t look at him.

I looked at my daughter.

The doctors surrounded her.

Then one sentence cut through the noise.

“Get pediatric cardiology now.””

I turned toward Michael.

“You knew the truth?””

His face crumbled.

“Rachel…”

“What truth?””

He looked like he wanted to run.

Then his phone rang.

He pulled it out.

The screen showed a name.

Claire.

Michael stared at it.

I stared too.

Then I saw the message preview.

My blood turned cold.

May you like

It said:

*She knows everything now. Tell her before I do.*
