Chapter 7: The Baby They Tried to Take

I stared at the message until the words stopped looking like words.

*“Noah was switched before you ever held him.””*

My fingers went numb.

The phone slipped slightly in my hand, but I caught it before it hit the floor.

No.

My mind rejected it immediately.

Not because I trusted everyone in that room.

I didn’t.

Not anymore.

But because some things were too painful to even imagine.

Noah was my son.

I remembered the moment I first saw him.

The operating room lights above me.

The sound of machines.

The doctor saying, “He’s here.””

The first cry that filled the room.

The tiny fingers wrapped around mine.

That memory belonged to me.

Nobody could take that away.

But suddenly everyone around me was telling me there was another story.

Another truth.

Another version of the night my son was born.

Evan looked at the photograph again.

Then at his father.

“Explain.””

Daniel Carter remained calm.

Too calm.

That was the most frightening part.

A normal person would panic.

A normal person would be shocked.

But Daniel looked like he had been waiting for this moment.

“The woman in that picture is Rachel Morgan.””

My heart tightened.

“The woman who sent the message?””

Daniel nodded.

“She was involved in the delivery.””

Evan’s face darkened.

“Involved how?””

Daniel looked at him.

“She was the original patient scheduled in the same surgical wing.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with Noah?””

Nobody answered immediately.

And that silence made my fear grow.

Evan stepped forward.

“What does she have to do with my son?””

Daniel looked at Helen.

Then back at us.

“Rachel gave birth the same night.””

My stomach dropped.

The room became completely silent.

I looked down at Noah.

My baby.

My little boy.

“No.””

My voice came out weak.

“No, that’s not possible.””

Daniel continued.

“There was confusion in the hospital.””

Evan shook his head.

“Stop talking like this was some paperwork mistake.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You weren’t there.””

“I was.””

“You were outside the operating room.””

The words hit Evan.

Because they were true.

Daniel continued.

“You saw the aftermath. Not everything that happened inside.””

Evan’s fists clenched.

“So you’re saying my wife’s baby was switched?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

I felt dizzy.

I held onto the edge of the table.

Helen moved toward me.

“Maya…”

I stepped away.

“No.””

She stopped.

“You don’t get to comfort me.””

Her face fell.

Because she knew I was right.

“You knew.””

Helen swallowed.

“I knew there were questions.””

“You knew there was a possibility someone took my baby away.””

“I was trying to find the truth.””

I laughed quietly.

“The truth?””

My eyes burned.

“You made me carry groceries. You sent away my nurse. You investigated me while I was recovering. You treated me like I was the problem.””

Helen looked down.

“I thought you might be involved.””

Those words destroyed whatever patience I had left.

“Involved?””

I looked at her.

“I was pregnant.””

My voice shook.

“I was scared. I was exhausted. I almost died giving birth.””

I touched Noah’s head gently.

“And all you could do was look at me like I was guilty.””

Helen’s lips parted.

But no words came out.

Because there was nothing she could say.

Evan looked at his mother.

“You accused my wife.””

“I was trying to protect Noah.””

“No.””

His voice was sharp.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Daniel interrupted.

“This argument changes nothing.””

Evan turned.

“You don’t get to speak.””

“I’m telling you what happened.””

“You faked your death.””

Daniel went silent.

“And you expect me to trust you?””

The older man looked away.

For the first time, I saw something human in him.

Regret.

But it disappeared quickly.

“The night Noah was born, someone tried to alter the records.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Who?””

He finally said:

“The hospital administrator.””

Evan frowned.

“Why?””

“Because someone paid him.””

My heart sank.

“Who paid him?””

Daniel looked at Helen.

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Evan stared at his mother.

“Mom?””

“I didn’t pay anyone.””

Daniel said nothing.

And that silence created a new suspicion.

Helen’s eyes widened.

“You know I didn’t.””

Daniel looked away.

That was the first time I noticed something.

Helen was afraid of Daniel.

Not annoyed.

Not frustrated.

Afraid.

A memory flashed through my mind.

The way she always checked her phone before answering.

The way she changed subjects when certain names came up.

The way she defended him even after he was supposedly dead.

Suddenly, Helen wasn’t the person controlling everything.

Maybe she was also trapped.

Evan noticed too.

“Dad.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Were you controlling her?””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Watch your words.””

“No.””

Evan stepped closer.

“I spent years thinking you were dead. I spent years believing Mom was grieving. And now I find out both of you have been lying.””

His voice broke.

“What else?””

Daniel looked at him.

“There’s more.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course there was.

There was always more.

Daniel reached into the folder again.

This time he pulled out a document.

“A DNA test.””

My heart stopped.

Evan grabbed it.

“What is this?””

“The first test.””

I stared at the paper.

“First?””

Daniel nodded.

“The one Helen ordered.””

Evan opened it.

His eyes scanned the page.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

He looked confused.

“That’s impossible.””

“What does it say?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

“Evan.””

He slowly handed me the paper.

My hands shook as I read.

*Maternal match confirmed.*

I looked up.

“What?””

Daniel watched me.

“The test proved you are Noah’s biological mother.””

The room froze.

I looked at Helen.

Then Daniel.

“Then why did you do all this?””

Nobody answered.

Because that was the real question.

If the test proved I was Noah’s mother…

Why was everyone acting like I wasn’t?

Evan looked furious.

“Explain.””

Daniel took a breath.

“The test was not the problem.””

“Then what was?””

Daniel pointed at the document.

“The date.””

I looked down.

The date.

My blood turned cold.

The test had been done before Noah was born.

That was impossible.

I looked at Evan.

“This was done before delivery.””

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

My voice became a whisper.

“How?””

Daniel answered.

“Because someone was planning this before you ever entered the hospital.””

A cold silence filled the room.

Someone had planned everything.

The records.

The investigation.

The questions.

Before Noah was even born.

Then my phone buzzed again.

A new message.

This time from Rachel.

I opened it.

There was no text.

Only a video.

My hands trembled as I pressed play.

The screen showed a hospital hallway.

The date matched the night Noah was born.

A nurse walked past the camera.

Then Rachel appeared.

Holding a baby.

A newborn.

My breath caught.

Then the camera moved.

A second person entered the hallway.

Helen.

Holding another newborn.

I stopped breathing.

Because the timestamp showed the moment clearly.

The moment happened before Noah was placed in my arms.

And then Rachel whispered something into the camera:

“I’m sorry, Maya.””

The video continued.

Helen looked at the baby in her arms.

And said:

“Soon, everyone will believe this child belongs where he was meant to be.””

The video ended.

I stared at the black screen.

Evan looked at me.

His voice barely came out.

“Maya…”

I couldn’t answer.

Because now we knew one thing.

Noah wasn’t just part of a mistake.

He was part of a plan.

May you like

And the person who planned it…

Had been standing beside me from the beginning.
