Chapter 5: The Voice Behind the Plan

The nursery felt like it had changed overnight.

The same pale blue walls.

The same stuffed animals sitting neatly on the shelf.

The same tiny crib where Noah slept peacefully just hours earlier.

But now every corner felt like it was hiding something.

Evan stood frozen beside me, still holding the baby monitor in his hand.

The recording had ended.

But Helen’s voice remained.

“I already changed the plan. The baby cannot stay with Maya.””

I kept hearing it over and over.

Not because I didn’t understand the words.

Because I did.

Too well.

My own mother-in-law had been talking about my newborn son like he was an object she could move around.

Like I wasn’t his mother.

Like my place could be erased.

Evan slowly placed the monitor on the dresser.

“Maya…”

I looked at him.

His eyes were filled with disbelief.

“I swear to you, I didn’t know.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

But my voice sounded different.

Because even though I believed Evan, there was something else bothering me.

The recording.

The hidden conversation.

The fact that Helen had been making plans before anyone knew there was a problem.

“How long has she been doing this?””

Evan looked down.

“I don’t know.””

That answer hurt.

Because neither of us knew anything anymore.

A few hours ago, I thought my biggest problem was recovering from surgery while my mother-in-law criticized everything I did.

Now I was sitting in my son’s nursery wondering if someone had been trying to take him away from me.

Evan ran his hand through his hair.

“We need to find out where that recording came from.””

I looked at the monitor.

“The camera.””

He frowned.

“What?””

“The monitor has a camera.””

He picked it up.

“You think it recorded this?””

“I don’t know.””

We checked the settings.

The camera history.

The saved files.

Nothing.

Every recording from the last few days was missing.

Evan stared at the screen.

“Someone deleted them.””

My stomach tightened.

“Can you recover them?””

“I’ll try.””

He grabbed his laptop from downstairs.

I stayed in the nursery, holding Noah.

Watching his tiny chest rise and fall.

How could anyone look at this child and think they had the right to decide his future?

A few minutes later, Evan returned.

His face was serious.

“What?””

He sat beside me.

“The recording wasn’t from the camera.””

I looked at him.

“Then where?””

He hesitated.

“The monitor has a backup microphone.””

“What?””

“For voice activation.””

“Why would it save audio?””

“Because we never changed the factory settings.””

My heart sank.

“So it recorded everything?””

“Only certain sounds.””

“And Helen’s conversation was one of them.””

Evan looked at the screen.

“There are more files.””

My breathing stopped.

“How many?””

“Twenty-three.””

I stared at him.

Twenty-three recordings.

Twenty-three moments we didn’t know existed.

Evan opened the first file.

Static filled the room.

Then voices.

Helen.

And someone else.

“You need to stop asking questions.””

A man.

The same man from before.

Helen sounded nervous.

“I’m trying to protect my son.””

“You’re making this more complicated than it needs to be.””

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand perfectly. The longer Maya stays involved, the harder this becomes.””

My hand flew to my mouth.

Evan immediately paused the recording.

Neither of us spoke.

Then he pressed play again.

Helen’s voice returned.

“She cannot know about the records.””

The man answered.

“She already signed everything.””

My heart stopped.

“Signed what?”” Evan whispered.

The recording continued.

“She signed the hospital paperwork after surgery.””

Helen sounded relieved.

“She was barely conscious.””

“That’s why it worked.””

Evan slammed the laptop shut.

“No.””

I looked at him.

His face had gone pale.

“What?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Evan.””

“That’s impossible.””

“What is?””

He stood up.

“My wife didn’t sign anything after surgery.””

I stared at him.

“You know that?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

He looked at me.

And suddenly I remembered.

The question I had asked him earlier.

What happened the night Noah was born?

He still hadn’t answered.

“Evan…”

He sat back down slowly.

“I was there.””

My heart tightened.

“You were?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

He looked ashamed.

“Because you were unconscious.””

The room became quiet.

“Tell me.””

He took a deep breath.

“When they took you into surgery, the doctor said there was a complication. Noah’s heartbeat dropped, and they needed to deliver him immediately.””

I nodded slowly.

I remembered pieces.

Lights.

Voices.

Panic.

“They told me to wait outside.””

“Okay.””

“But after Noah was born, something happened.””

“What?””

Evan looked at the floor.

“A nurse came out.””

My fingers tightened around Noah’s blanket.

“What nurse?””

He swallowed.

“The same nurse who was supposed to visit you at home.””

My heart raced.

“What did she say?””

“She said there was a problem with the paperwork.””

“What kind of problem?””

Evan closed his eyes.

“She said someone had already accessed your records.””

The air left my lungs.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Evan.””

“I don’t know, Maya.””

His voice cracked.

“I was terrified. You were unconscious. Noah was in the NICU for observation. Everything was happening at once.””

I looked away.

“So you knew there was a problem.””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone kept saying that.

Protect you.

Protect the family.

Protect the baby.

But nobody protected me.

“I needed the truth.””

“I know.””

“No, Evan. You don’t.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“I spent five days thinking I was failing as a mother because I was tired and in pain.””

He reached for my hand.

“I’m sorry.””

I pulled away.

Not because I didn’t love him.

Because I was hurt.

Then the laptop suddenly made a sound.

The recording had restarted.

Neither of us touched it.

We both looked at the screen.

A new file had opened.

A file dated the night Noah was born.

Evan slowly clicked it.

The audio began.

A hospital hallway.

Footsteps.

Then a voice.

My mother.

Claire.

I froze.

“No…”

My mother’s voice came through the speaker.

“I need you to promise me you won’t let them take my daughter’s baby.””

Evan looked at me.

My entire body went cold.

A man answered.

“You should have stayed out of this.””

My mother sounded afraid.

“But I know what you’re doing.””

The man replied:

“You don’t know enough.””

“I know enough to stop you.””

A long silence.

Then my mother whispered:

“If anything happens to me, Maya needs to know the truth.””

The recording crackled.

Then another voice appeared.

Helen.

“You shouldn’t have come here.””

I covered my mouth.

Evan stood up.

His face was full of shock.

The recording continued.

My mother spoke again.

“You lied to my daughter.””

Helen answered.

“I’m doing what needs to be done.””

“Taking her baby?””

A pause.

Then Helen said:

“Taking him away from a woman who doesn’t deserve him.””

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

The recording stopped.

The nursery was silent.

Evan looked at me.

Neither of us needed to say it.

The truth was finally becoming clear.

Helen had been planning something long before Noah was born.

But there was one thing we still didn’t know.

Who was the man talking to her?

Evan replayed the audio.

This time, he focused on the background.

The footsteps.

The voices.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Maya…”

“What?””

He pointed at the laptop.

“That man’s voice…”

His expression turned into disbelief.

“I know who it is.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

Evan slowly stood.

May you like

And whispered:

“It’s my father.””
