Chapter 6: The Person Behind the Messages
Emily stared at the phone screen.
For several seconds, she didn’t blink.
I watched the color drain from her face as if someone had opened a door and let all the warmth leave the room.
“No,” she whispered.
The officer lowered the phone slightly.
“Ma’am?””
Emily shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“That’s not possible.””
I looked at the screen.
I couldn’t see the entire conversation from where I stood.
Only one thing was clear.
A name.
A name that had caused my daughter to react like she had just seen a ghost.
“Emily,” I said softly.
She didn’t answer.
She was staring at the phone.
At the name.
At the betrayal.
“Who is it?”” I asked.
She swallowed.
Then she finally spoke.
“My sister.””
The room went silent.
Rachel looked confused.
“Your sister?””
Emily nodded slowly.
“My older sister, Claire.””
I remembered Claire.
Everyone in our family knew Claire.
She was the person who always appeared when something important happened.
Birthdays.
Holidays.
Family gatherings.
She had held Lily when she was a baby.
She had stood beside Emily at the funeral after her husband died.
She had told everyone:
“I’ll always protect my little sister.””
Those words suddenly felt different.
Emily sat down.
“I don’t understand.””
The officer placed the phone on the table.
“We need to verify the messages before making assumptions.””
Emily looked at him.
“But you saw them.””
“I saw messages between this phone and another number.””
She nodded.
“And the other number belongs to my sister.””
Her voice cracked.
The officer remained calm.
“We need to investigate the full context.””
But Emily wasn’t listening anymore.
She was remembering.
I could see it.
Every moment she trusted Claire.
Every time she opened her home.
Every time she allowed her sister near Lily.
I sat beside her.
“Emily.””
She looked at me.
“Dad…”
That one word carried so much pain.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Pain.
“What if I missed it?””
I frowned.
“Missed what?””
“What if Lily was trying to tell me and I didn’t see?””
My heart hurt hearing that.
“Emily, look at me.””
She did.
“You are her mother.””
“But—”
“No.””
I held her gaze.
“You loved her every day. You fought for her every day. Someone else’s choices are not your failure.””
She looked down.
Behind us, Lily was quietly coloring with Karen.
A normal activity.
A normal moment.
Something she should have been doing all afternoon.
Not hiding.
Not writing warnings.
Not trying to find a way to be heard.
The officer cleared his throat.
“There’s something else.””
Everyone looked at him.
He held up the evidence bag.
“The second phone contains deleted files.””
Marcus immediately reacted.
“Those aren’t important.””
The officer looked at him.
“You don’t know what we recovered yet.””
Marcus stopped talking.
The officer continued.
“Our technical team will review the device, but there are previews available.””
He opened a folder.
Inside were screenshots.
The first one showed a conversation between Marcus and Claire.
*Claire: She still trusts me.*
*Marcus: Good. Keep it that way.*
Emily covered her mouth.
The second message appeared.
*Claire: How long until she signs?*
Emily looked confused.
“Signs what?””
The officer scrolled.
Another message.
*Marcus: Once the custody issue starts, she’ll be desperate. That’s when we push the house agreement.*
My stomach dropped.
The house.
This wasn’t just about Lily.
It was about money.
Property.
Control.
Emily looked at Marcus.
“You were going after my home?””
Marcus stared at the floor.
The silence was his answer.
Rachel suddenly spoke.
“I didn’t know about that.””
Everyone looked at her.
“You didn’t?”” Emily asked.
Rachel shook her head quickly.
“No.””
She looked terrified.
“I knew he was angry. I knew he wanted to prove you weren’t doing enough.””
“Why?””
Rachel hesitated.
“Because Claire told him you didn’t deserve everything you had.””
Emily’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel looked at her.
“She said you always got lucky.””
I felt anger rising.
Lucky?
My daughter lost her husband.
She raised a child alone.
She worked herself exhausted.
And someone called that lucky?
Emily stood.
“Where is Claire?””
Nobody answered.
She looked at Marcus.
“Where is my sister?””
Marcus finally spoke.
“I don’t know.””
“You were texting her.””
“She stopped responding.””
“After what?””
Marcus looked away.
That was enough.
Emily walked toward him.
“What happened?””
He remained silent.
The officer stepped between them.
“Ms. Harrison.””
Emily stopped.
But her eyes stayed on Marcus.
“You brought my sister into this.””
Marcus shook his head.
“She came to me.””
That sentence changed everything.
Emily froze.
“What?””
Marcus realized he had said too much.
The officer immediately noticed.
“Explain.””
Marcus looked around.
Then sighed.
“Claire was the one who suggested the idea.””
Emily stared.
“What idea?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
The officer repeated:
“What idea?””
Marcus rubbed his face.
“The custody plan.””
The room felt smaller.
Emily whispered:
“My sister planned this?””
Marcus looked down.
“She said Lily needed someone stronger.””
Emily looked at Lily.
Then back at Marcus.
“You mean someone like you?””
He didn’t respond.
I stepped forward.
“You hurt a little girl because someone promised you something?””
Marcus looked at me.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I heard.
“Like what?””
He looked toward Lily.
“She wasn’t supposed to find the camera.””
The words came out before he could stop them.
Everyone froze.
The officer looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
Marcus immediately shook his head.
“I didn’t mean—”
“No.””
The officer raised his hand.
“You said she wasn’t supposed to find the camera.””
Marcus went quiet.
And that was when I realized something.
The camera wasn’t hidden to watch Lily.
Not originally.
It was hidden because Marcus and Claire wanted to create a story.
They wanted moments.
Evidence.
Anything they could twist.
But Lily had found it.
And she had found the truth.
The officer asked:
“Where is Claire now?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Then his phone inside the evidence bag vibrated.
Everyone looked.
The officer picked it up carefully.
A new message had appeared.
From Claire.
The officer read it aloud.
*Did he tell them everything?*
Emily’s face went pale.
Another message arrived.
*If he gets arrested, I’m leaving.*
Then another.
*I’m sorry, Marcus. You should have handled the child better.*
Nobody spoke.
Even Marcus looked shocked.
Because whoever Claire was…
She had just abandoned him.
The officer looked at the phone.
“She’s still nearby.””
Emily stared.
“How do you know?””
The officer pointed.
“Location services are still active.””
He turned the screen.
A map appeared.
A small dot blinked.
Not miles away.
Not across town.
Right near us.
I looked toward the window.
A car was parked across the street.
Dark.
Still.
Watching the house.
Emily whispered:
“That’s her.””
The officer moved toward the door.
But before he opened it, Lily grabbed my hand.
Her little fingers wrapped around mine.
“Grandpa.””
I looked down.
“What is it?””
She looked toward the window.
Then whispered:
“Aunt Claire came before.””
My blood went cold.
“What do you mean?””
Lily’s eyes filled with fear.
“She came at night.””
Emily turned.
“When?””
Lily hugged herself.
“Before Uncle put the camera.””
Nobody moved.
The officer stopped.
“Lily, sweetheart.””
She looked at him.
“What did she do?””
The little girl looked at the camera.
Then at her mother.
Then said the words that changed everything.
“She told Uncle Marcus where to put it.””
The officer slowly reached for the door handle.
May you like
And outside…
The parked car suddenly started moving.
