Chapter 4: The Footage Nobody Was Supposed to See

The red light blinked again.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

A tiny signal hidden behind a family photograph.

Something that had been watching.

Recording.

Waiting.

For a moment, nobody in the hallway moved.

Even Marcus.

Especially Marcus.

Because the second he saw that camera, the confidence disappeared from his face.

The excuses disappeared.

The anger disappeared.

All that remained was fear.

Emily noticed it too.

She slowly turned toward him.

“You knew.””

Marcus said nothing.

“You knew there was a camera.””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Emily’s eyes narrowed.

“You said no before anyone asked.””

Marcus swallowed.

“I meant I didn’t know what you were talking about.””

I stepped between him and the camera.

“That’s not what your face said.””

Marcus glared at me.

“You think you’re some hero now?””

“No.””

I looked toward Lily.

“I think I’m the person who walked in before it got worse.””

Those words hit him.

Because everyone in that house knew what almost happened.

And nobody wanted to say it.

Emily reached for her phone.

“I’m calling the police.””

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

The room went silent again.

Emily looked at him.

“Why?””

Marcus froze.

She lifted her phone higher.

“Why don’t you want me to call them?””

“I’m just saying we should talk first.””

“Talk?””

Her voice shook.

“My father came into my house and found my daughter scared, injured, and begging him to find a camera.””

Marcus rubbed his face.

“You’re making this sound worse than it is.””

Emily laughed quietly.

There was no humor in it.

“No.””

She looked at Lily.

“You made it worse.””

Lily was sitting on the couch now, wrapped in her blanket.

Karen stayed beside her.

Keeping her calm.

Keeping her away from Marcus.

I noticed something then.

The little girl who had been terrified minutes ago was watching the camera.

Not Marcus.

Not Rachel.

The camera.

Like she knew that tiny object was finally going to tell the truth.

Emily called the police.

Marcus didn’t try to stop her again.

That scared me more.

People who are innocent usually fight to prove they are innocent.

Marcus looked like someone calculating his next move.

While we waited, Karen helped us remove the camera from the wall.

It was smaller than I expected.

A tiny device.

Easy to hide.

Easy to ignore.

Easy for someone to pretend they never saw.

But inside that small piece of plastic was the truth.

A police officer arrived twenty minutes later with another officer.

They separated everyone.

They asked questions.

They took pictures.

They examined the room.

When the officer picked up the camera, Marcus finally spoke.

“It’s not what you think.””

The officer looked at him.

“Then you won’t mind explaining.””

Marcus opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

The officer nodded.

“That’s what I thought.””

Emily sat beside Lily while they checked her wrist.

I stayed nearby.

I couldn’t leave her.

Not after what I had seen.

The officer eventually came back.

“Mr. Marcus Hale?””

Marcus stood.

“Yes.””

“We need to ask you about the recording device.””

“It was just a security camera.””

The officer looked at the device.

“Security cameras are usually disclosed to people living in the home.””

Marcus shrugged.

“I forgot.””

The officer stared at him.

“You forgot a hidden camera pointed at a child’s bedroom entrance?””

The room became quiet.

Emily looked up.

“Bedroom?””

The officer glanced at his notes.

“The device appears to have been positioned to capture the hallway and the child’s bedroom door.””

Emily’s face changed.

“You mean Lily’s room?””

The officer didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

Emily stood.

“No.””

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

“No.””

She looked at Marcus.

“You put a camera near my daughter’s room?””

Marcus looked away.

“It wasn’t like that.””

“What was it like?””

No answer.

The officer asked Marcus to hand over his phone.

Marcus hesitated.

“Why?””

“Because we need to determine where the footage was being stored.””

“I don’t have anything.””

The officer held out his hand.

“Your phone.””

Slowly, Marcus handed it over.

The officer connected it to the camera system.

A few seconds later, his expression changed.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

Enough for me to know he had found something.

“What?”” Emily asked.

The officer looked at her.

“We found saved recordings.””

Emily stepped forward.

“How many?””

The officer looked down.

“Several weeks.””

My stomach dropped.

Several weeks.

Meaning this wasn’t something that happened once.

This was planned.

The officer continued scrolling.

“There are recordings from the living room, hallway, and entry area.””

Emily’s voice became small.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Then the officer looked at Marcus.

“Who else has access to this system?””

Marcus didn’t respond.

“Mr. Hale?””

“Myself.””

The officer looked back at the phone.

“Only you?””

Marcus hesitated.

A little too long.

The officer noticed.

“Who else?””

Rachel suddenly started crying.

“Marcus…”

He turned toward her.

“Don’t.””

Emily looked at Rachel.

“Tell me.””

Rachel wiped her face.

“I didn’t know what he was doing at first.””

“At first?””

Rachel looked down.

“He said it was for safety.””

Emily stared.

“And then?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

“Then what?””

Rachel’s voice broke.

“He started watching it all the time.””

The room went silent.

Emily looked horrified.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel covered her face.

“He watched Lily.””

My hands tightened.

The officer immediately stepped closer.

“Watched her doing what?””

Rachel shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus exploded.

“Stop talking.””

The officer raised his hand.

“Sit down.””

Marcus ignored him.

“You don’t understand anything.””

“No,” I said.

“We understand one thing.””

I pointed toward Lily.

“You were supposed to protect her.””

Marcus looked at me.

His eyes were cold.

“You don’t know what she did.””

Everyone froze.

Emily stared.

“What did you just say?””

Marcus realized his mistake.

Too late.

“What did Lily do?””

Marcus looked away.

“Nothing.””

Emily stepped closer.

“No.””

Her voice was different now.

“What did my daughter do?””

Marcus stayed silent.

The officer looked at him.

“You need to answer.””

Marcus finally said:

“She found something.””

“What?””

He looked toward the hallway.

Toward the camera.

Toward the house.

Then he whispered:

“She found the files.””

Emily frowned.

“What files?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

I felt a chill.

Because suddenly, this wasn’t only about the ice.

It wasn’t only about the bandage.

It wasn’t only about the camera.

There was something else.

Something Marcus had been hiding.

The officer searched the room again.

Then one of the officers near the hallway called out.

“Sir?””

Everyone turned.

The officer was standing beside a small locked cabinet near the closet.

“We found something.””

Emily walked over.

“What?””

The officer held up a key.

“Hidden inside the camera mount.””

Marcus went pale.

The officer unlocked the cabinet.

Inside were folders.

Photographs.

Documents.

And a small notebook.

Emily reached for the top folder.

The officer stopped her.

“Careful.””

She opened it anyway.

The first page was a printed photo of Lily.

Not a family photo.

Not a school photo.

A photo taken inside the house.

While she was sleeping.

Emily covered her mouth.

Then she saw the title written across the folder.

Her hands started shaking.

Because it wasn’t Lily’s name on the file.

It was hers.
