Chapter 8: The Man Who Was Erased From Our Lives

“Your son deserves to know who his real father is.””

The words froze me.

Not because I understood them.

Because I didn’t.

My first instinct was denial.

A stranger was standing outside my son’s hospital room, claiming to know a secret about his birth.

A secret my own family had hidden.

A secret that somehow connected to everything happening tonight.

I looked at Mateo.

He looked just as confused as I was.

“Mom…”

I squeezed his hand.

“Stay here.””

The security officer moved between us and the door.

“Everyone stay back.””

The hallway remained silent.

The emergency lights painted everything in a strange red glow.

Then the man outside spoke again.

“Lucia, I know you can hear me.””

My heart raced.

“How do you know my name?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because I knew you before anyone else did.””

I felt a chill.

The security officer looked at me.

“Do you know this person?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

But even as I said it, something inside me felt unsettled.

Not recognition.

Not exactly.

More like a forgotten memory trying to surface.

The man continued.

“Your mother told you I was dead.””

My eyes moved toward my phone.

My mother.

The woman who had spent the entire night telling me she was protecting me.

The woman who had hidden everything.

“Who are you?””

His answer came quietly.

“My name is Daniel.””

The name meant nothing.

Until Elena suddenly gasped.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

She stepped backward.

Her face had lost all color.

“You know him?””

She stared at the door.

“Daniel Alvarez.””

My stomach dropped.

Alvarez.

Our last name.

I looked at her.

“What did you just say?””

She swallowed.

“He’s Mateo’s father.””

The room went silent.

I couldn’t hear anything else.

Not the alarms.

Not the footsteps.

Not even my own breathing.

“No.””

The word escaped before I could stop it.

Elena looked at me.

“Lucia…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

The man outside spoke.

“Lucia.””

My hand tightened around Mateo’s.

“You’re not dead.””

Silence.

Then:

“No.””

The door handle moved slightly.

The security officer raised his hand.

“Don’t move.””

The man stopped.

“I’m not here to hurt anyone.””

I laughed bitterly.

“That’s what everyone says.””

And it was true.

Everyone who had betrayed me tonight had claimed they were protecting someone.

My mother.

My father.

Victor.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had an explanation.

But my son was still the one who ended up trapped in a wreck.

“Why now?”” I asked.

The voice outside became quieter.

“Because I found out Victor was coming after Mateo.””

I looked at Elena.

“Then why didn’t you come before?””

A long pause.

The answer hurt before I even heard it.

“Because your family made sure I couldn’t.””

My chest tightened.

“What does that mean?””

The security officer looked at me.

“Do you want him inside?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because I didn’t know.

A part of me wanted to open the door.

A part of me wanted to know the truth.

Another part remembered that every person I trusted had lied to me.

Finally, I said:

“Open it.””

The security officer hesitated.

Then slowly unlocked the door.

The man stepped inside.

And I forgot how to breathe.

Because I knew him.

Not from memory.

From pictures.

Old pictures.

Pictures my mother had hidden.

He looked older.

His hair was darker with gray.

His face carried years of exhaustion.

But there was no denying it.

He was the man standing beside me in my wedding photos.

The man I was told had disappeared.

The man I believed abandoned me.

Daniel.

My first husband.

Mateo’s biological father.

Mateo stared at him.

“Who are you?””

Daniel looked at him.

And his eyes filled with tears.

“I’m sorry.””

Mateo frowned.

“Sorry for what?””

Daniel took a step forward.

Then stopped.

“Everything.””

I felt anger rise inside me.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“You don’t get to say that.””

“I know.””

“You disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“You let me raise our son alone.””

“Yes.””

“You let me believe you were dead.””

His face tightened.

“Yes.””

“Then don’t stand here acting like you’re the victim.””

He lowered his head.

“I’m not.””

That answer surprised me.

He didn’t defend himself.

He didn’t make excuses.

He just accepted it.

“I made mistakes.””

“More than mistakes.””

“Yes.””

His voice cracked.

“But I never stopped trying to protect you.””

I stared at him.

“Protect me?””

I pointed around the room.

“My son was nearly killed tonight.””

“I know.””

“People are threatening us.””

“I know.””

“Then where were you?””

His eyes filled.

“Trying to get back to you.””

I wanted to hate him.

It would have been easier.

But there was something in his face.

Something that looked like regret.

Not the fake regret my mother showed.

Not fear of being caught.

Real pain.

Elena interrupted.

“Daniel, tell her.””

He looked at her.

“You’re sure?””

“We don’t have time.””

I turned toward them.

“Tell me what?””

Daniel took a deep breath.

Then looked at Mateo.

“Sixteen years ago, I didn’t leave you.””

I said nothing.

“My car was found abandoned.””

I remembered.

The story everyone told me.

A terrible accident.

No body recovered.

No explanation.

“Your mother told me you were in danger.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“She told me your family was being threatened.””

“By who?””

“Victor.””

The name again.

Always Victor.

“She told me if I stayed near you, they would use me to get to you.””

I shook my head.

“So you ran?””

“I hid.””

“That’s not better.””

“No.””

He looked down.

“It wasn’t.””

Mateo watched him carefully.

“Why come back now?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because I found proof.””

“What proof?””

Daniel reached inside his coat.

My body immediately tensed.

The security officer stepped forward.

But Daniel slowly pulled out a small envelope.

He handed it to me.

Inside was a hospital document.

Old.

Yellowed.

My hands shook as I opened it.

The date.

The hospital name.

The birth records.

Then I saw something that made my entire world stop.

The document listed two names.

Two newborn children.

My eyes moved over the page.

I couldn’t understand.

“No.””

Daniel watched me.

“Lucia…”

I looked up.

“What is this?””

His voice was quiet.

“The truth your mother buried.””

I looked back down.

The paper trembled in my hands.

Because sixteen years ago, I thought I had given birth to one child.

Mateo.

But the document said something impossible.

Two babies.

A boy.

And a girl.

My breathing stopped.

“No.””

Daniel whispered:

“You didn’t lose one child.””

I looked at him.

“You were told you did.””

The room went completely silent.

Mateo looked confused.

“Mom?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because my whole life had just cracked open.

The baby I was told never existed…

The child I was told was a mistake in the records…

The secret my family had protected for sixteen years…

Daniel pointed at the document.

“Your mother changed the records.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

Before he could answer, my phone buzzed.

A new message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*ASK DANIEL WHY HE REALLY CAME BACK.*

Then another message appeared.

A photo.

A recent photo.

Daniel standing outside the hospital.

Talking to Victor.

My hands went cold.

I looked at Daniel.

He saw the picture.

And his face changed.

Because he knew.

Someone had just exposed him.

Someone who knew the truth.

And then Daniel whispered the words that made me realize the nightmare was far from over.

“Lucia…”

May you like

He looked at Mateo.

“Your son is not the only child Victor has been looking for.””
