Chapter 7: The Father Who Chose Money Over His Family
For a moment, I couldn’t move.
The photo on my phone remained frozen on the screen.
My father.
Standing outside my son’s hospital room.
His face partially hidden.
His jacket slightly open.
A weapon visible underneath.
My mind tried to reject it.
Because no matter what had happened that night, there was still a part of me that wanted to believe he was not capable of crossing that line.
He was the man who taught me how to swim.
The man who held my hand when I got stitches after falling off my bicycle.
The man who cried when Mateo was born.
But the truth was standing in front of me.
And the truth didn’t care about my memories.
“Mom?””
Mateo’s voice pulled me back.
I quickly turned my phone away.
Too quickly.
He noticed.
“Who was it?””
I forced myself to breathe.
“No one.””
Elena immediately looked at me.
She knew I was lying.
Mateo knew too.
“Mom.””
I closed my eyes.
I hated that he had to see this.
I hated that my sixteen-year-old son was being forced to understand things adults had spent years hiding.
“Your grandfather was outside the room.””
Mateo’s face changed.
“What?””
I didn’t answer.
Elena stepped closer.
“Lucia, we need to leave.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“Now.””
“Mateo can’t leave.””
“I don’t mean the hospital.””
She looked toward the door.
“I mean this room.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
“Because if Victor knows we have the drive, he knows exactly where we are.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“He already threatened us.””
“No.””
Elena shook her head.
“You don’t understand.””
She pointed toward my phone.
“That picture wasn’t sent to scare you.””
“Then why?””
“Because it was proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That someone inside this hospital is helping him.””
I looked toward the hallway.
Suddenly every person walking past the room felt different.
Every stranger.
Every shadow.
Every sound.
The hospital no longer felt safe.
It felt like a place where secrets could find you.
A place where people could disappear.
My phone rang again.
This time, it was my mother.
I stared at the screen.
Elena whispered:
“Don’t answer.””
But I did.
Because I needed to know.
“Mom?””
For several seconds, there was only breathing.
Then her voice.
“Lucia, where are you?””
I almost laughed.
“You don’t know?””
Silence.
“You’re angry.””
“My son almost died.””
“I know.””
“You stood there.””
Her voice cracked.
“I made a mistake.””
I froze.
My mother admitting a mistake was something I had rarely heard in my entire life.
“What mistake?””
“I thought I was protecting you.””
I looked at Mateo.
Then at Elena.
“Protecting me from what?””
She hesitated.
“Your father.””
The room went silent.
I stood up slowly.
“What?””
My mother’s voice became smaller.
“Lucia, you need to listen carefully.””
“Why should I?””
“Because I should have told you years ago.””
That sentence scared me.
Years ago.
Not tonight.
Years ago.
“What happened?””
A long pause.
Then she whispered:
“Your father was never the victim.””
My chest tightened.
“Explain.””
“He wants everyone to believe Victor forced him into everything.””
“And?””
“He didn’t.””
I looked at Elena.
She nodded slightly.
She had been right.
My father was not innocent.
My mother continued.
“Ernesto went to Victor first.””
My stomach dropped.
“Why?””
“Because he wanted money.””
The words felt like another betrayal.
“He was desperate.””
“So he committed fraud?””
“He told himself he was borrowing time.””
I shook my head.
“And when he couldn’t pay?””
My mother became quiet.
“Then he created a way out.””
I already knew.
But I needed her to say it.
“What way?””
Her voice trembled.
“Your insurance policy.””
I closed my eyes.
The pain was almost physical.
My own father.
Planning around my death.
Using my son.
“He was going to kill me?””
“No.””
My mother answered too quickly.
I caught it.
“No?””
“Lucia…”
“Say it.””
Silence.
Then:
“He was going to let it happen.””
Those words hurt worse.
Because they meant my father didn’t have to physically do anything.
He only had to stand aside.
Just like he had done with Mateo.
I looked at my son.
The realization hit me.
This was who my father was.
A man who didn’t have to push someone into danger.
He just waited.
“Where is he now?””
My mother didn’t answer.
“Mom.””
“He left.””
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
I looked at the photo again.
The gun.
The hospital.
The timing.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“He didn’t leave.””
My mother went quiet.
“He’s coming back.””
Ten minutes later, the hospital security team arrived.
A nurse had noticed my panic and contacted them after I explained there was a threat.
I hated that I had to explain.
I hated that I was sitting in a hospital protecting my son from people who shared his blood.
A security officer stood near the door.
“Ma’am, we’re reviewing the cameras.””
“Can you see who entered this floor?””
“Yes.””
“Show me.””
The officer hesitated.
“I’m not sure you want to see this.””
My heart sank.
“Show me.””
He turned the monitor.
The footage appeared.
The hallway outside Mateo’s room.
A timestamp.
Twenty minutes earlier.
A figure walking toward the door.
My father.
He stopped outside.
Looked around.
Then reached inside his jacket.
I felt Mateo grab my hand.
“Mom…”
The footage continued.
My father pulled something out.
Not the gun.
A small envelope.
He placed it under the door.
Then walked away.
I stared at the screen.
“What is that?””
The officer looked at me.
“We found it.””
My heart raced.
“Where?””
“In the room.””
He handed me a sealed envelope.
My father’s handwriting was on the front.
*For Lucia.*
My hands shook.
I opened it.
Inside was a single page.
Only a few sentences.
But they destroyed whatever was left of my trust.
Lucia,
If you are reading this, it means everything failed.
I never wanted it to happen this way.
But you need to understand something.
Your mother will tell you I planned this.
Victor will tell you I planned this.
They are both lying.
The truth is that Mateo was never the target.
I stopped.
Elena leaned closer.
I continued.
The person Victor wants gone is not you.
My heart started beating faster.
The next line was underlined.
It is the person who knows what really happened sixteen years ago.
I looked at Mateo.
He looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
I turned the page.
There was one final sentence.
And it changed everything.
Ask your mother why she lied about what happened the night Mateo was born.
I looked up slowly.
Elena’s face had gone pale.
“Why?””
She stared at the letter.
“Because Victor wasn’t afraid of Mateo because of the insurance money.””
“Then why?””
She looked at me.
“Because Mateo knows something.””
My voice shook.
“He was a baby.””
Elena swallowed.
“Not about tonight.””
She pointed to the letter.
“About sixteen years ago.””
Before I could ask another question, the hospital lights suddenly went out.
The hallway filled with darkness.
Then the emergency lights flickered on.
Red.
Dim.
The security officer reached for his radio.
“Possible power failure.””
But Elena was already backing away.
“What?””
She whispered:
“No.””
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“He found us.””
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Coming closer.
Then a man’s voice spoke from outside the door.
“Lucia.””
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
It wasn’t Victor.
It wasn’t my father.
It was someone I had not seen in sixteen years.
Someone my mother had told me was dead.
“Open the door.””
My blood ran cold.
Because the voice said my name.
May you like
Then the stranger added:
“Your son deserves to know who his real father is.””
