Chapter 9: The Witness Who Knew Too Much

I found Daniel in the front garden, standing beside his black SUV.

The neighborhood had finally begun to empty. The teenagers had ridden away, Mr. Henderson had gone inside, and the security officers were finishing their report.

Brooke was sitting in the passenger seat of a police vehicle, wrapped in a borrowed blanket while an officer spoke with her.

Ethan had disappeared into the house.

Margaret was still in the driveway, making calls.

Everything looked almost ordinary again.

Almost.

I walked toward Daniel with the loan documents in my hand.

“Can we talk?””

He turned immediately.

“Of course.””

I held up the first page.

“Why is your name on this?””

His eyes dropped to the document.

For several seconds, he didn't move.

Then he took the paper from me.

I watched his expression carefully as he read the details.

First confusion.

Then disbelief.

Finally, something that looked almost like fear.

“This isn't possible,” he said.

“Is that your signature?””

He studied the page again.

“No.””

“You're listed as the witness.””

“I know what it says.””

“Then how did your name get there?””

He looked at me.

“I have no idea.””

I wanted to believe him.

After everything that had happened, I desperately wanted one person in this story to be exactly who they claimed to be.

But I couldn't afford to accept anyone's explanation without evidence anymore.

“When did you last sign a document connected to my house?”” I asked.

“Never.””

“Have you ever met the man who came to my house in the blue sedan?””

Daniel frowned.

“What man?””

I showed him the security recording.

He watched the clip in silence.

When the man entered through the side door, Daniel leaned closer to the screen.

“I've seen him before.””

My stomach tightened.

“Where?””

“At a business event. Several years ago.””

“Who is he?””

“I don't remember his name.””

“Daniel, please.””

He rubbed his jaw.

“He was introduced as a financial consultant. I attended a charity dinner with Brooke, and he was seated at our table. He spoke to Ethan for most of the evening.””

I stared at the recording.

“Why would a financial consultant bring property documents to my house?””

“I don't know.””

“Why is your name on a loan application you never witnessed?””

“I don't know that either.””

He handed my phone back.

Then he said something that made my stomach twist.

“Lauren, I need to tell you something about Brooke.””

I folded my arms.

“Go ahead.””

“About six months ago, she started asking questions about our finances. At first, I thought she was worried about retirement. Then she began asking how much equity we had in our house, whether the title was in both our names, and whether I had ever signed a personal guarantee for someone else's business.””

I stared at him.

“What did you tell her?””

“That I hadn't.””

“Did she explain why she was asking?””

“She said a friend was dealing with a complicated financial situation and needed advice.””

“A friend named Ethan?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I suspected something was wrong, but I didn't know what.””

“Did you confront her?””

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

“That I was being paranoid.””

The familiar word landed between us.

Paranoid.

Ethan had used it whenever I questioned his late nights or his unexplained expenses.

Apparently, Brooke had learned the same technique.

Daniel continued.

“I checked our joint accounts after that conversation. I found several withdrawals I couldn't explain. Brooke told me they were payments for household expenses, but she couldn't produce receipts.””

“Did you report them?””

“No. I thought we'd resolve it privately.””

He looked toward the police vehicle.

“I should have asked more questions.””

I understood that feeling too well.

The number of times I had accepted an explanation because I wanted my life to remain peaceful suddenly seemed endless.

“What happened next?”” I asked.

“Three weeks ago, I received a letter from a financial institution asking me to verify my involvement in a property transaction.””

My grip tightened on the documents.

“What did you do?””

“I called the institution. They told me they couldn't discuss the account without additional verification. I explained that I hadn't authorized anything connected to your house, and they said they'd investigate.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

He looked ashamed.

“Because I didn't know whether the letter was legitimate. I didn't want to accuse your husband of something I couldn't prove.””

“And you didn't think to tell me that someone might be using your identity?””

“I know how that sounds.””

“It sounds like I was the last person anyone considered telling the truth.””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“You're right.””

His answer disarmed me.

No excuses.

No attempt to make me feel unreasonable.

Just an acknowledgment that he had made a mistake.

For the first time that evening, I felt my anger loosen slightly.

“Do you think Brooke knew about the loan?””

“I think she knew something.””

“Why?””

“Because she asked me to sign a document about six months ago. She said it was related to a small business investment. I refused because the paperwork was incomplete.””

“Do you still have it?””

He nodded.

“I kept a copy.””

“Can I see it?””

“Tomorrow morning. I'll send it to my attorney first.””

I appreciated that he wasn't rushing to hand me something potentially sensitive without proper review.

Before I could answer, Margaret approached us.

“Daniel, I need to ask you a question.””

He looked at her.

“Go ahead.””

“Have you ever had access to Ethan's company accounts?””

“No.””

“Has anyone ever asked you to witness a financial document for him?””

May you like

Daniel hesitated.

Then he
