Chapter 7: The Test
Maya was waiting when I arrived at my mother's house.
She opened the door before I knocked twice.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
She looked older.
Not old.
Just tired.
The kind of tired that settles behind the eyes.
“You found him,” she said.
I nodded.
“Ryan?””
“Yes.””
She closed her eyes.
“Then you know.””
“Not enough.””
Maya stepped aside.
“Come in.””
My daughters were in the living room.
Three years ago, they had been babies.
Now they were three.
Emma was sitting on the carpet with a wooden puzzle.
Lily was drawing with a purple crayon.
They both looked up.
Emma stared at me.
Lily looked at Maya.
“Is that him?”” Emma asked.
Maya's face tightened.
“Yes.””
“Daddy?””
The word nearly broke me.
I crouched.
“Hi.””
Lily stood first.
She walked toward me slowly.
Then she stopped.
“You're tall.””
I laughed through the lump in my throat.
“So are you.””
Emma came closer.
“Grandma says you like pancakes.””
“I do.””
“Do you make them?””
“I can.””
She considered that.
“You can stay, then.””
I looked at Maya.
She was crying silently.
That evening, after the girls were asleep, Maya placed a thick envelope on the kitchen counter.
“You deserve to know everything.””
I didn't touch it.
“Start with Marcus.””
She nodded.
“Dr. Marcus Hale was Claire's physician.””
“Family doctor?””
“No.””
“What kind?””
Maya hesitated.
“Fertility and prenatal medicine.””
I stared at her.
“Claire wasn't pregnant when I deployed.””
“I know.””
“Then why was she seeing him?””
Maya opened the envelope.
Inside was a laboratory report.
My name was on it.
So was Claire's.
And beneath that was a date.
The date was eight months before I returned.
I read the result.
*Paternity analysis: inconclusive.*
I looked up.
“What is this?””
“Not the original.””
“What?””
“The original said something else.””
“What?””
Maya sat down.
“It said both girls were genetically compatible with you.””
I stared at her.
“Then why was this changed?””
“I don't know.””
“Who changed it?””
“Marcus.””
“How do you know?””
“Because I saw him do it.””
The room seemed to shrink.
Maya continued.
“Claire brought me to his office one night. She thought I was loyal to her. She wanted me to sign a statement saying you'd been violent.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“I refused.””
“She threatened me.””
“With what?””
“My son.””
I looked at her.
“He was seventeen then. She knew he was applying for college. She said she could make sure he never got accepted anywhere.””
I said nothing.
Maya's fingers trembled.
“I signed nothing.””
“What did Marcus do?””
“He told Claire the girls could be placed under another guardian if you were declared medically unstable.””
I frowned.
“I wasn't unstable.””
“Not according to your military records.””
I felt the blood leave my face.
“What did he write?””
She slid another document across the counter.
*Post-traumatic behavioral instability.*
My signature was nowhere on it.
But my service number was.
“This is forged.””
“Yes.””
“Who submitted it?””
“Claire.””
I stood.
“She tried to make me look unfit.””
Maya nodded.
“Because she wanted custody.””
“Why?””
“I don't know.””
I turned toward the dark hallway.
“Money?””
“No.””
“Another man?””
Maya looked at me.
“Not exactly.””
“What does that mean?””
She didn't answer.
I put both hands on the counter.
“Tell me.””
Maya opened the envelope again.
There was a photograph inside.
Claire was standing beside Marcus.
They weren't kissing.
They weren't touching.
But they were looking at each other like two people who shared a secret.
On the back was handwritten:
*Before the babies were born.*
I turned it over.
“What secret?””
Maya whispered, “The girls weren't supposed to come home with you.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“Claire was offered money.””
“By Marcus?””
“No.””
“Then who?””
Maya looked toward the hallway.
“That's the part I never understood.””
A floorboard creaked upstairs.
We both looked up.
The girls were asleep.
I reached for the envelope.
Something fell from inside.
A tiny plastic hospital bracelet.
I picked it up.
*BABY A — CARTER*
My fingers went cold.
Then I turned it over.
There was another name printed beneath mine.
*Patient: Claire Carter.*
Maya whispered, “There was a second bracelet.””
I looked at her.
“Where is it?””
She didn't answer.
“Where is it, Maya?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Claire took it.””
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
One message.
*You are looking in the wrong place.*
A second message appeared before I could breathe.
*Ask your mother why the twins were born at Hollowfield Medical Center.*
I looked at Maya.
“Hollowfield?””
She went pale.
“I thought that hospital closed years ago.””
I stared at the message.
Three years after walking into an empty house, I finally understood why the same word kept appearing in old documents.
Hollowfield.
May you like
It wasn't where Claire had gone.
It was where the story had started.
