Chapter 4: The Family Meeting

I called everyone into the living room.

Ryan came downstairs first.

Then Kelsey.

Then my parents.

Nobody spoke.

They knew.

They knew something had changed.

I placed the email on the coffee table.

Ryan looked at it.

Then at Mom.

“What is this?””

Mom started crying.

“Ryan, I can explain.””

“No.””

His voice was different.

For the first time, he wasn’t angry at me.

He was angry because he realized he had been lied to too.

“You told me Jenna agreed.””

Mom looked down.

“I thought she would.””

Ryan stared.

“You never asked her?””

“No.””

The room went silent.

Kelsey shook her head.

“This is unbelievable.””

I looked at her.

“You’re surprised?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“I thought everything was legal.””

“Because you wanted it to be.””

She didn’t answer.

My father finally spoke.

“Jenna, we made mistakes.””

I looked at him.

“Mistakes are forgetting someone’s birthday.””

My voice cracked.

“Mistakes are missing dinner.””

I pointed toward the room.

“This was a decision.””

Nobody spoke.

The truth was finally sitting in the middle of us.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Ryan sat down.

“I didn’t know Mom created that email.””

“But you knew you were moving into a house you never purchased.””

He looked away.

“I thought the paperwork was handled.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He rubbed his face.

“I’m sorry.””

Those words should have helped.

They didn’t.

Because apologies after damage don’t erase the damage.

Kelsey stood.

“Fine. We’ll leave.””

I looked at her.

“Will you?””

Her face changed.

“What does that mean?””

“It means I don’t know if you understand what happened.””

She became defensive.

“We made plans.””

“You made plans for my property.””

She walked toward the stairs.

Then stopped.

“I gave up our apartment.””

Ryan looked at her.

“You did what?””

She froze.

The room changed.

“You never told me that,” Ryan said.

Kelsey looked uncomfortable.

“I assumed this was permanent.””

I stared.

Permanent.

They had never planned to leave.

They weren’t temporarily confused.

They had already imagined a future inside my house.

That night, I stayed at a hotel.

I couldn’t sleep there.

Not because I was afraid.

Because every corner reminded me that my family had looked at something I created and decided it belonged to them.

At midnight, I received another call.

This time from Miranda.

“Jenna, we found the source of the forged documents.””

I sat up.

“Who?””

Her answer was quiet.

“Someone in your family.””

My heart sank.

“Ryan?””

“No.””

A pause.

“Your father.””

I stopped breathing.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

I stared at the dark hotel room.

The man who taught me honesty.

The man who told me family mattered.

The man who always said he was proud of me.

“Why would he do this?””

Miranda hesitated.

May you like

Then said:

“Because he believed you were going to make a decision that would hurt Ryan.””
